I've just posted some pictures on Facebook, it was so easy, why is it still so difficult here, at least for IT illiterates like me.?

The simple answer is that you have uploaded the pictures to Facebook's servers (thereby possibly losing control of them, even if you actually own them). Autosport doesn't - for reasons explained several times in this thread - offer that option. And never will.

If you have mastered uploading to Facebook, then using a hosting service like PostImage and linking to the picture from here really isn't that hard.  :)

I am a Mac user and I thought reasonably competent in using links to photos in emails via Dropbox or the like but I found Post Image quite "clunky".  Maybe it has been designed as a Windows adjunct so less friendly to Mac operating systems and programs.  The "How it works" instructions in the Post Image website did not appear on my Mac, no matter what I tried.

I eventually found I had to first create a Post Image account complete with username and password; upload the two images I wanted to include in my new "What badge is this?" post (See this link) and then copy the image links from my Post Image gallery into my draft TNF post.  After previewing that draft I wanted to make the first image larger yet there didn't seem to be a means to do sizing of that  initial image before or after it was linked into the message.

Having first read the 9 pages of posts about uploading images it seems many TNFers have had comparable trouble with Post Image over the years.  Maybe the moderators could draft a KISS step by step set of instructions for Windows and Mac users.

One thing that complicates the matter of image size is that the software for this forum has changed a couple of years ago...

So you might post a pic of a certain size, but the forum software will determine that it show at another size.

I don't use a Mac so I have no idea what issues you might have there, but postimage has given me no problems at all, though it is definitely harder to manage with Windows 10.

It has been the case in the past that I've gone to some trouble to help people get the step-by-step instructions, but the way I'm being treated on this forum these days doesn't incline me to be of a lot of help any more.

I don't know, either, whether Irfanview is usable with a Mac, but I do recommend it for cropping and other minor 'post processing' operations in preparation for posting photos.

Here's a gem I found recently.

So easy, so quick.

Just remember to click through to "this image will live forever"

Yes, it is quick...

But how do you link it here? Other than as a link to be clicked on and open another window, of course...

It's possible...

but it took going into the "page info" screen (Firefox/Win7) to retrieve the actual image url.

It's all getting too hard.

There are two ways to do that. Having uploaded the picture:

1 Right-click on the picture and select 'view image' (not 'copy image location'). The green background will disappear and you can then copy the actual image address from your navigation bar.

Or

2 Right-click on the green background area and select 'view page info'. Left-click on either of the lines 'image_src' or 'og:image' and then right-click and select 'copy'.

I did some searching on YouTube for Invision Power Board (IP.Board) tutorials, none fit Autosport exactly. I thought these were the best,

https://www.youtube....h?v=Oh4i5ECWblo
https://www.youtube....h?v=JLISR1hMH-w

While they are helpful in a general way with creating posts, they're lacking regarding the specific task of putting photos into post.

Periodically I have put up pictorials on how to do it, in the past always with Imageshack...

But these get buried by people posting afterwards and get hard to find, and Imageshack got into the habit of losing the pics too. But a multitude of posts is the main problem, people 'testing' or posting photos in this thread to show that they mastered the art leaves the pictorial instructions lost in the distant past.

I'd be happy to post a similar thing for Postimage if I knew it wasn't to be buried like that.

I suggest that you sort something out with Vitesse 2 on the lines of:

(1)  Unpin this thread and let it fade into obscurity.

(2)  Start a new pinned thread "How to use Postimage"  with instructions and the injunction "Do not make trial posts here".

(3)  Maybe even have a separate pinned thread for experiments - maybe with the instruction "Delete after use"

Probably a good idea...

Also a 'please don't post here that you can't work it out, read the instructions again and you will be able to do it!'?

I have used PostImage for some time without problem,, now it will not work as the site has changed.  I have tried every tab to upload a pic [a pic that has been uploaded before], I get the little symbol that something has happened and when I try to post it says I cannot load that image to this community.

Is it A me?

B Post Image ?

C this site?

That error message usually happens when the board software considers that the last section of the image's URL is incorrect in some way. Either an image type which is not supported or one which has a further element after the image type. If you've copied the picture from elsewhere your computer may have changed the file name or it may have an element in it which is presumably designed to stop hotlinking or copying - I've noticed some sites use image file names which end .jpe rather than .jpg or .jpeg for example - or the image name may end with something like .jpg.large. In the first case, just copy/paste the picture into Irfanview, which will recognise the fact it's a .jpg and automatically change the file name; you can then save it and upload it as normal. In the second case, just rename the file to eliminate any elements after the file type.

I have tried it with every button on the page. Some allows you to copy and paste but then all you get is the dreaded little icon. And when I try to post it says   'You are not allowed to use that image in this community'  As if I was trying to load naughty pics!! An uncovered motorcar!

As I said a pic that has been previously posted

I click on the 'share' icon then do the usual cut and paste, get the icon and then the message.

I have had the icon before when posting but it does actually load after going back to the particular thread.

I am a technophobe first and foremost but it seems Post Image and Atlas no longer are compatible.

And I have several hundred pics loaded there.

I really do not know why sites change for the sake of change

I agree with the comment about them changing for change's sake... ridiculous...

With Post Image, however, they do offer you the option to use the old-style site. Just have a look when you go to upload and you will get that option somewhere (I found it, but it's gone now because I have gone back to the old style and it stays that way - offering you the chance to go to Post Image 2.0, of course).

Also, are you ensuring that the 'family safe' option is ticked?

Here it is, from the bottom of the page when you want to upload:

You can even tell them their site has gone to the pack!

I found that and now I can post with no problems. I think the techno nerds forget technophobes like me. They may well understand this 'new improved' but I do not.
Thanks Ray

Well, I suppose it was inevitable. Just had this from Dropbox. Hutber's Law in action ...

We’re always looking to improve the Dropbox sharing experience. The Public folder was the first sharing method we introduced, and since then, we’ve built even better ways for you to share securely and work together with your team.

As a result, we’ll soon be ending support for the Public folder. Dropbox Basic users will be able to use the Public folder until March 15, 2017. After that date the files in your Public folder will become private, and links to these files will be deactivated. Your files will remain safe in Dropbox.

In other words, if - as I have - you've been using your Dropbox public folder as a photo hosting site, the existing links won't work after that date and your photos will no longer be visible here. You will not be able to link them from the board to Dropbox either, as the new instructions specify that you have to provide individual email addresses for people allowed to view shared files.

I think one will still be able to post links to one's Dropbox photos, eg:

https://www.dropbox.....00.53.jpg?dl=0

(this photo has never been in my public folder) but it does look as though it will no longer be possible to post Dropbox photos directly into one's post. Agreed that the existing public folder links will no longer work after the Ides of March. Bugger.

Can't see anything in that link, Richard! Is this it https://en.wikipedia...ki/Hutber's_law ?

Because all the photo hosting sites people have used (and enthused over) since I've been aware of them have changed their rules to make them untenable at some stage I am not happy enough with remote hosting to use it. I know we'll never get direct image posting here, but it would be better if we did.

A couple of sites I use have direct posting but nothing is without hazards as on one of those they lost the internal links that connected the photos with where they were displayed. At least in that case it was an internal problem for the site and its owners and there was some hope that all would be restored eventually, whereas when a remote host rats on you there is nothing to be done.

Yes, that's the one. Very odd, because I still have a copy of the post in my Textarea Cache extension and the link in that is correct!

From my reading of the email, I'm not sure that will work in the future either. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

But this is not a test place...

To test you put it into a thread about that subject, or click on 'Preview Post' before posting.

Though in this case there's something wrong with the 'image extension'.

Nothing wrong with the image extension, Ray. Wrong link, though; when I click on the link it takes me to my own Dropbox account and tells me the sub-folder 'Racing Photos' doesn't exist. The only way to get a Dropbox-hosted picture into a post is to have it in a public folder. Which won't last much longer anyway.
