What I find surprising is how few of some were made, particularly the Aston Martins.
Can anyone add any other figures? In particular prewar Alfas, Bentleys, Bugattis, Maseratis, etc?

Apparently, there were perhaps nine (9) W125s made.
As for Bugatti, according to Conway, the Type 51 has chassis numbers from 51121 to 51160 -- of which two had '51146' stamped on the chassis, but one is actually '51148' it seems, plus another two with chassis no. '51155' -- one with engine 23 which Conway says means that it is actually '51156.' The Type 54s were '54201' to '54210' without a '54208' apaprently. The Type 59s were numbered '59121' to '59124' and ended up in Britain within weeks of each other in 1935.

This leads to think there were 15 individual chassis, but I could be wrong....
Gary Wayne seems to have established that A.J. Watson built 23 Roadsters, plus few other cars such as the "Pots & Pans Special" and helped build the Bob Estes Special with Jud Phillips in 1954. Then there are the rear-engined Watsons to sort out, something I keep meaning to do...
Rolla Vollstedt built 14 cars:
Track roadsters: 1/47 and 2/49
Sprint Car: 3/51
Super Modified: 4/57
Champ Cars: 5/59, 6/63, 7/65, 8/66, 9/66, 10/67, 11/67, 12/71, 13/73, & 14/77
Just some food for thought....

1954 - Vanwall Special, built by Cooper. Scrapped after Barcelona crash.
1955 - Four chassis, VW1-4. All broken up to become basis of 1956 cars.
1956 - Four chassis VW1/56-4/56. Rebuilt for 1957, when they were the basis of the third generation VW1-4.
1957 - Ten chassis VW1-10. VW2 and VW9 were never completed in this year.
1958 - Same ten chassis, but VW1, VW2, VW3 and VW8 were not assembled and used as sources of spares.
1959 - VW5 rebuilt as the "lightweight". VW9 rebuilt as show car. VW10 used for testing, then rebuilt to 1958 spec in 1960. All other team cars broken up.
1960 - VW11 - The "low-line". VWL12 - Lotus 18 c/n 901.
1961 - VW 14 - IC Formula car.
So, even ignoring VWL 12, I make that a minimum of twelve (or thirteen including the 1954 car), with a theoretical maximum of 21!

Production numbers for the Miller's are the source of debate even among the most astute experts of the marque. Quite understandable given that any number of Miller 122's were refitted with Miller 91 engines upon the change in regulations.
Best estimates for the quantity of the various Miller chassis produced insofar as I have been able to determine are:
Miller 183 - 12
Miller 122 RWD - 15
Miller 122 FWD - 2
Miller 91 RWD - 7 to 9
Miller 91 FWD - 9 to 10
Of course, many more engines of the various types were produced than were chassis, enabling the conversion of many Miller's to new regulations and the creation of many Miller-engined specials.

miller-ford fwd-12 cars assembled and numbered....enough spares to make a few more whole cars
gulf-miller 4-cyl rwd-2 numbered chassis and engines..no spare parts known to exist
gulf-miller 6-cyl 4wd-4 chassis....drivetrain spares and complete spare engines [as many as 8]
the actual # of surviving miller-fords is a bit unclear..both gulf fours exist [both currently under restoration]..and the single surviving gulf six is in the speedway museum.

The reason is the difficulty in determining what numbers may have been used twice for different entities and what different numbers may have been used by the same entity. A typical problem is when a car has a replacement chassis in period and the original chassis is re-used either in period or later. In his Lister book Robert Edwards puts it very well when he says he has not counted cars that have been 'rebuilt around a door handle'.
My intention was to try and find out approximate numbers for comparative purposes, given that absolute accuracy is not possible without getting bogged down in a quagmire of definitions.
To take a few examples of my numbers
Aston Martin made one DBR3 which ran once and was then converted to DBR1 specification. I didn't count it as a DBR1 as the listing I was working from listed it separately
My number of 14 W154s comes from an article in Historic Race and Sports Car circa 1993 that said that although the W154s were numbered from 1 to 16, numbers 13 and 15 appeared to not have been used. Don's listing duplication of 'werks no' and 'Kommission no' for chassis nos. 13 and 16 matches with that and no 15 must have since been found or identified.
Maserati 250F's - David McKinney has written a book sorting this minefield out. I simply took his total chassis numbers and deducted out those identified as not used or duplicated numbering.
Vanwalls - I ignored the 1954 and 55 cars, VW12 and VW14 as they were totally different from the definitive Costin/Chapman cars. I tossed up about VW11 and decided to include it. As they claim that only four (or occasionally more) cars were assembled at any one time the situation is again murky.

I have often made attempts to record production numbers of certain cars, and always dreamed of making ONE BIG database. Well, at least one can still dream...
Here a few from my memory banks, perhaps later some more when I have had the time to consult my records:
Duesenberg Straight 8: 2 in 1919, 4 in 1920 and (iirc) another 4 in 1921.
Stutz: 3 or 4 in 1911, the same (perhaps rebuilt) in 1913, 4 in 1915
Hudson Super 6: 4 in 1916
Novi V8: 1 in 1946, 1 in 1947, 2 in 1956, 2 in 1959 (?)
Blue Crown Spark Plug: 2 FD in 1947, 1 RD each in 1949 and 1950
Kuzma Dirt Champ Car: 1 in 1951, 2 in 1952, 2 in 1953, 2 in 1955 etc.
Kuzma Roadster: 1 in 1954, 1 in 1955, 3 in 1956 etc.
Maserati 4CLT/48: 6 in 1948, 12 in 1949 (+ 2 4CLT/50)
Ferrari 125F1: 3 in 1948, 3 in 1949 (+2 125F1/50)

Williams FW07 - chassis numbers went up to /17 across '07 - '07C spec, suggesting 16 "entities", but I don't know which cars were built into new entities. Similarly there were six '08s and six '08Bs, but is that 12 cars?;)
McLaren M23 - at least 13 including a retub or two and the /8-2 vs /10 distinction!
March 701 - at least 11, plus a couple of retubs and possibly one car built up from spare bits....
March 761 - at least 11, but some of them seem to have used tubs from earlier models!
BRM P160 - 11
Shadow DN1 - 9 (including at least one retub)
Brabham BT46 and BT49 - 9 - across several specs!
Lotus 72 - 9
Shadow DN8 - 8 - including a couple of retubs
Ferrari 312B3 - 8
March 811 - 7 - dunno how many of these were rebuilt into 821s, were the bits common at all?
Ferrari 312T2 - 7
Brabham BT42 - 7 - although a fair degree of interchangeability with BT44! (4 BT44s, 4 BT44Bs, how many concurrent entities?)
BRM P153 - 7
McLaren M26 - 7
Surtees TS19 - 7
Tyrrell - 007, P34, 009 and 012 - 7 each.
March 711 and 751 - 6 each (though it seems that bits may have migrated all the way from 741-761B, and 75A was almost identical to 751...)
Alfa 179 and 182 - 6 each
Arrows A1 and A4 - 6 each (and four FA1s - I wonder how many FA1 bits went into the A1?)
Ferrari 312T - 6
Hesketh 308E - 6
Surtees TS9 - 6
Interesting to see how close to the size of a modern F1 grid you could get with just FW07s or M23s + M26s, although "concurrent entities" may make matters a bit different ;)

According to my notes, there were only 4 original AAR F1 Eagles produced as follows:
AAR-101 - 4 Cylinder Climax
AAR-102 - V12 Gurney Weslake
AAR-103 - V12 Gurney Weslake
AAR-104 - V12 Gurney Weslake - Mag Ti Car
There was a fifth V12 Gurney Weslake car constructed later from an original tub and parts that is currently in a private collection in L.A. but I have no reference for the chassis number (AAR-105?).

Are you positive both Gulf-Miller fours exist? I have been doing some research for a project and could only completely track the history and whereabouts of one of the two cars up to this point...I'm not doubting two cars are being restored, just wondering in what type of complete condition the other is...I knew there was one complete one around...wondering how much of the other one is real or if they are having to fabricate a lot of major and minor parts. Any info would help.
Thanks.

gulf-miller 4-cyl rwd-2 numbered chassis and engines..no spare parts known to exist
gulf-miller 6-cyl 4wd-4 chassis....drivetrain spares and complete spare engines [as many as 8]
the actual # of surviving miller-fords is a bit unclear..both gulf fours exist [both currently under restoration]..and the single surviving gulf six is in the speedway museum.

the rumors have always indicated 10 miller-fords were assembled...perhaps this is true but as all the major components were numbered per car,i have seen suspension arms #12 and never any parts with a higher#...[my car was #5 and had an upper rear suspension casting from car #11!!!]... i have seen a transaxle case with no numbers.. most likely indicating a spare..
now as an ex-owner of chassis#1 gulf four i can guarantee it does exist and in quite good complete original condition...the long lost chassis#2 was fairly recently unearthed by a well known eastern collector and is being restored with my old car as a reference[car #2 was surprising complete as well including original body panels, tho squashed enough to hide the cars identity to the less critical eye]...both original engines have resided in a damp chicago basement for eons and have finally been liberated ..they now reside with their respective chassis...it's a fine example of my theory that the less sucessful a race car was when new the more likely it might survive intact....it will indeed be cool to see the pair together again.

note...car #1 will be restored to it's final incarnation while car #1 is being returned to the prototype configuration..complete with copper tube surface cooling!
below is miller-ford chassis#5...;ex granitelli;ex tiny gould;ex boudeman;ex dbw;ex hannay...image as restored by high mountain classics...

Hi Don. Don't know why the T1F duplicated itself. I have followed the convention of calling the Climax car a T1F and the Weslake car a T1G on my site. I am aware of alternative viewsOriginally posted by Don Capps

Hi Michael. What's your source for the Ralt RT1s? Mine is the Ralt RT1 thread on 10 Tenths (although I may have miscounted). On the 741s, it depends what you call a car and what you call a new tub in an old car. Both are equally right - or wrong.Originally posted by fines

I think you did include the DBR3 in the DBR1 numbers. My understanding is that the DBR3 became DBR1/4 which was driven in 1959 by Trintingnant and Frere. The conversion was quite simple as the only differences were the engine, the front suspension and some minor bodywork differences resulting from the change of engine. I don't think you can identify 5 DBR1s without including this car.Originally posted by D-Type
Aston Martin made one DBR3 which ran once and was then converted to DBR1 specification. I didn't count it as a DBR1 as the listing I was working from listed it separately
DBR1/5 was built from spares by Graham Whitehead's mechanics and was never raced by the factory team.
I appreciate that you are only concerend with production numbers +/- 1 or 2 but in this case that is 40% of total production.

I appreciate that this is TNF where people are concerned with accuracy. I think my '+/- a couple' was really aimed at the likes of the 250F or Vanwall figures which are subject to interpretation or the D-Type that the factory turned into an XKSS that was later 'restored' as a long nose D-Type and then re-restord as an XKSS.
Does anybody have any prewar Alfa figures? I saw an incredibly low figure for their total production in one of the1930's but I'm not sure where I saw it.
