From Atlas

"Sports goods retailer Puma AG will enter into a sponsorship and licensing deal with sportscar maker Ferrari, a German newspaper said on Friday"

I haven't seen anything further to confirm this, but if true, doesn't it seem odd?

Ferrari had a successfull relationship with Tommy Hilfiger if I recall correctly, before going to Fila. Which I can understand, as Fila is an Italian company(?) etc.

But wasn't that quite recently, as in a couple of years ago? So why the switch to a supplier who is also doing half the field, and so soon?

Money one would imagine; the kit suppliers change endlessly in football with Nike, Adidas, Puma, Umbro and the rest constantly bidding a bit more to nick teams off each other, or a bit less to ditch teams to who've dropped out of prominence/fashion.

Maybe Puma made an offer Ferrari couldn't refuse. Or maybe Adidas were sniffing round. Puma was founded by Horst Dassler, brother of Adidas' Adi Dassler, and the two didn't really get on...Dassler (H) also had strong links with sports management.

Adidas have never really had a motorsports involvement. They've done some race boots before, but nothing noteworthy. Shame, because they have one of the better integrated logos

So what's this gonna do to MSchumacher's Nike contract? I know his racing boots are provided by them. Does the Puma contract void that, or is MSchumacher excluded from the Puma deal?

i'm familiar with adi dassler but didn't know about horst setting up puma
interesting, as they are my two favourite sporting brands in terms of marketing and design
(nike - crime, reebok - dorky, the rest interesting but relatively obscure)

Puma owns F1 basically, as above it really is just McLaren and BAR as hold-outs. And BAR could probably be tempted.

Puma has very few exclusive deals though. The Toyota drivers use Sparco suits, any gloves they want, and Puma boots, but the team members have Nike shoes. At Williams the firesuites and uniforms are Puma. Ralf has a Sparco suit and Puma gloves/boots and Juan has a full alpinestars deals.

The only really pure teams are BAR and Renault, running 100% alpinestars; and I think Sauber/Jordan/Minardi for 100% Puma
