Hi,

inspired by this thread i was wondering how the weight of an F1 car is build up. In the mentioned thread, it says the monocoque only ways like 40KG's or so. The tire don't weigh more than a few either (I have been told) .....

Has anybody got some info on this? How much does the engine, seat, suspension, wings etc etc weigh? How much would a f1 car weigh without any added balast?

Thanx already!

A good engine weigh in at approx 85kg

Its believed that top teams run atleast 75Kg of ballast. So that mean an unfueled car with no driver and no ballast could be down to 460Kg if we say that a driver is 70Kg

Get the Peter Wright book about the 2000 Ferrari. That should have some of the info you are after.

There's some info on a July issue from Autosprint, by Sergio Rinland.

Some data :

Complete monocoque : 49 Kg
Seat 4.5 Kg
Radiators : 10 Kg (presumably both)
Radiator box and pipelines : 2 Kg
Exstinguisher : 6 Kg
Axles : 3.5 Kg (both, it seems)
Gearbox including 1.8 Kg oil : 37 Kg
Front wing 4 kg
Rear wing 6.5 kg
Camera : 5 kg
Oil tank : 4 kg
Fuel tank : 7 Kg

5kg seems an awful lot for a camera.

It weighs more than the axles??

I'm guessing it's for batteries, transmitting gear, antennae and/or ballast, assuming the cameras would be powered independently and not connected to any of the cars' wiring looms. If I remember correctly, and I'm too lazy at the mo to go look, if no camera is fitted a 5kg weight is placed at the camera location in lieu of the actual camera.

The axles seem really too light.... but I guess Rinland knows what he's talking about.

The tires are so light you can not understand it unless you actually pick up and hold an F1 tyre assembly. When I was standing in the Ferrari garage and they had a stack of wheels and rims I thought, let me try lifting one. I figured it would be lighter than a road car or race car tyre but still take a good lift. I braced to pick it up so I didn't make a scene if I dropped it, instead it literally was at most 1-1.5kg for a rear tyre and rim assembly. It felt like it was made out of paper, that is the weight of it. I was taken aback, it just was beyond real.

I find this a bit impossible to believe, to put it, um, politely. A good bicycle rear rim and tire weighs about 0.6 kg and doesn't have to deal with more than one single horsepower.

I remember 3.5 kg for a wheel (not tyre)

That compares with say 8 kg for a lightish 15"x6" production car alloy wheel.

Various people on this forum have nicked used tyres - how much did they weigh? (not the people, the tyres)

No I'm not kidding when I say that a tyre off of an F1 car is probably at most the same weight as a bicycle tyre. I don't have any hard evidence, but I'll tell you that when I lifted up the tyre, it felt like I was lifting something made out of paper. Until you actually feel it, it is just beyond belief. I would have never believed this or understood the magnitude if someone told me before, simply if you have the chance, you have to feel the weight (or lack thereof) of F1 components.
