What a great car that was. My bro plans to draw it...but would need some photographic material to study its shape. Would be more than gratefull if you can find any.

FRWL, that's a 1971 Martini Porsche 917K at the Österreichring 1000km race that Pedro won (his last victory). The 917/30 was a 1100 bhp CanAm-Interserie car driven into history by Mark Donohue in 1973. I'll have a look in my 917 archives. You can also check for pictures on the Argentine website : here

Luc, I thought Klem looking for Porsche 917K chassis #030 :). And posted its photo from Zeltweg 1971 - there its drivers were Helmut Marko and Gerard Larrousse. They retired on 123 lap (of 190 lap race) after accident because of a puncture.

Now I understand that Klem looking for Can-Am car itself, so I have:

MINICHAMPS made both a 1/18 and 1/43 (which i have) diecast version of the car also. though it has become increasingly hard to find in both scales, it is stunning.

There are a few of the Donohue-garbed car among other interesting shots in the first album of Curt Anderson's Riverside International Raceway photos. I think they are from a Historic Cars event in the middle 80s.

If you want a model of the 917/30, I highly recommend the one made by Exoto (www.exoto.com I believe). Its expensive but the detail beggars belief. I have one myself, and half expect that if I screwed off the cylinder heads there would be little 1/18th scale valves and pistons in there.......

What about the red version? I have no idea why Exoto made the yellow car rather than that one...

Ah...Mr Elford and Mr Aherns. I've been trying to get the 1/43 scale kit for some time now. I keep getting outbid on ebay.

Well Keir, you have a point here. I've been checking my 917 pictures, books, magazines and archives and couldn't find a real nice color picture. Most of them are in B&W. I've found this one from Michael Keyser taken during the filming of "Le Mans" :

and some time ago, someone sent me these digital art pictures but I couldn't find the name of the artist :

I wasn't aware of it until I read his book but Vic Elford raced a 917-30 in Europe and there's a photo (or two) in the book. "High Performance Driving" or some like title. The '70 Martini Porsche 917 is my favorite 917, incidentally. Great photos of it and the 917-30!

Pedro,

Thanks, neat pics!!

The way I will always remember this car is from the movie, "Le Mans"!! The car just looks so brutally fast coming down the Mulsanne with it's body at least 5 inches closer to the track then the Gulf 917's!!

Great movie!! Great car!!!

Klem, this was not only a great car. Some time ago I read an article defending that this has been the MOST SUCCESSFUL RACING CAR EVER !!!!

This obviously can be a matter of opinion, but no doubt that the racing records of the 917 in its different variants, is outstanding in races all over the planet. From Le Mans to endurance series in America, this car won every type of race in which participate. This was a giant car.

Too bad the car wasn't really developed in 1969, and the Matra 640 coupe blew over and was wrecked in testing. A picture of those 2 cars in battle would have been most interesting...
