How much do they spend in MotoGP ? Is F1 just crazy, spending too much on everything?

What makes MotoGP so afforable?

I haven't heard much about MotoGP team budgets, probably just because I don't follow it closely.

I was told that one of the smallest teams in the 125cc category in MotoGP have an annual budget of about 1 million euros to run two bikes. The highest spenders in 125cc are KTM with about 15-20 people working on bikes of 2 riders compared to only about 4-5 for the small 2 bike teams.

I hate to break it to you, but MotoGP isn't as affordable as you might think...

I can't give you concrete figures, but it is possible that the sport will finding itself facing a similar situation as F1.

For its faults, the 500cc era was at least affordable. Development had pretty much reached its peak and the cost of Research and development was considerably less.

There has been talk of some of the manufacturers being unhappy with the cost of the new four stroke era. Honda and Yamaha don't care, but the rest...

Aprilia almost went bankrupt and has been rumoured to be leaving... That is until Pramac made a surprise move and they will now resume control of the team.

How long will Kawasaki stay given their results? Both Kawasaki and Suzuki could be instant winners on the cheap in Superbike.

Teams like Kenny Roberts may go under. WCM used to win races and now they can't afford/find a four stroke to use from a manufacturer.

D'Antin Ducati is essentially sponsorless and they spent about 8 million of their own money last year to compete.

Sponsors like Repsol do not cover the total cost of the bike and R&D. It covers only a fraction. The vast majority of the money in MotoGP is based on manufacturer involvement, not outside sponsorship.

Ahhh.... but the numbers.

These bike manufacturers are quite small compared to Ford, Toyota etc.

If MotoGP budgets are a few 10s of millions to run as many as 6 examples, that is perhaps more "affordable" than hundreds of millions to run two examples in F1 --- at least for the winners, as it would seem there MotoGPs gets almost as good media coverage as F1 in many countries.

After a fast Google search.

In http://www.1000ps.at...74075&id=774075 you get this info.

Is in German but it's clear that is 32 Mio €uros for the three championships (MotoGP, Superbikes and Supersport). You could suppose at least 50% is for MotoGP, so it's about 16 Mio. I don't know how accurate is the figure but at least seams in line with what it was said here by other people.

I'll try to ask someone in my company how much does my company pay for the sponsoring of a Ducati in the Superbike championship. I'll compare to what I was told the same company pays for a smaller sponsoring in a McLaren Mercedes. This could get an idea of how bigger is the budget. Or not.

The "version" I heard is different : Ducati claimed that they spent $30m Euros for the MotoGP project.

AFAIK,in the mid-90s,the satellite teams spent around $US1.5m to rent a NSR500 for a season including "technical support".
