I found a plastic model on Ebay this morning of a McLaren Mk8d Can-Am car featuring box art showing the car with Marlboro livery.

I've often wondered what a Mk8d would look like with Marlboro markings but didn't think any of the cars actually raced with their sponsorship.

Does anyone know if any Mk8d's wore Marlboro livery during their racing careers?

With no evidence to back up my opinion, I reckon this is complete 'never happened'!

I would have to agree with Barry. The M8D was the 1970 Group 7 car. Marlboro joined McLaren in 1974. I suppose it's possible that a private entry might sport Marlboro colors, but I've never seen a picture of a Can Am McLaren in Marlboro livery. That leaves the Interserie, (or Japan - did they have a Group 7 series, or just an annual race?) and I don't suspect that happened, either. I think this is just an instance of a modeler getting it partly wrong.

Interesting, anyway!

I think the car on the box cover is actually an M8F. The drivers helmet looks like Patrick Tambay IIRC. Is this an obscure Japan only paint scheme, or interserie car? Just some guesses.

Here's a McLaren in it's first Budweiser livery at IMS.

It has Texaco on there too... and a sort of an Emmo helmet design...

A lot of licence taken, methinks. Maybe the description 'vintage 60s' is a little off beam?

It might not be tambay neither, his helmet was white and blue.
We can talk about "poetic license", I think

Judging by the style of that '5', I'd say someone has lazily applied the livery of Emmo's 1974 McLaren M23 to a Can-Am car. Presumably to sell off old stock in 1975.

Emmo's '74 M23 featured the old Marlboro logo with san serif letters.

The Mk8D box art shows the more modern serif lettered Marlboro logo which began being used in '75.

I think the model's not authentic and was an attempt to cash in on the recognizability of the Marlboro colors.
