Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me with some tricky quiz questions. A German motor racing mag has a quiz going on with F1 questions from 1950-2004 - and this time (they're doing it for the 2nd time) they are really tricky.

The question for 1950 is:

How did the fans react when the BRM stopped after only a few metres at the Daily Express International Trophy in Silverstone? Did they throw strawberries at the mechanics, did they steal parts of the car after the race or did they throw pennies into the car when it was wheeled away? Personally I think it's the latter, but I couldn't find anything about that anywhere.

The 1960 question is:

Why did **** Daigh and Lance Rentlow call their car "Scarab"?

The 1980 question:

Who got the BRDC Wakefield Trophy for fastest lap of the year in Silverstone? Eliseo Salazar, Danny Ongais or James Hunt?

And just one more for now, the one for 1981:

Didier Pironi and Gilles Villeneuve have dinner together in a restaurant while in Le Castellet for tests. What can't Didier convince Gilles of:
a) drink wine, coz Gilles prefers Coke
b) eat meat, coz Gilles' vegetarian
c) stop Gilles calling his wife all the time
My guess would be b)

While it would be the desire of everyone here to see that the information required was available to you, pebbles, it's also the attitude of many here that people simply posting questions like this in the hope that they'll easily get the answers for some quiz is akin to cheating.

People who post these kinds of questions for the Russian quizzes are quickly despatched, for instance.

Now, you could possibly find a lot of this information by using the search facility or going to other sites and doing the same. That would be called research, and that's what these quizzes do engender.

Have a go at it, don't be distressed that we simply don't answer, but see how you get on and come back and let us know.

Well, Ray beat me to it. But I will tell you that one of your guesses is correct: I'm not going to say which one though ..... :p

The very upset crowd threw pennies in the BRM cockpit. The shaft failure was blamed on Stuck as he had suffered a similar situation on the debut of another car, but was in fact due the faulty heat treatment of the shaft. Strawberries were much too expensive.

Scarab is Mexican for beetle.

1980 question, Hunt had long retired, Salazar couldn't drive a nail into a plank of wood, so it's got to be Danny Ongais with his Cart car.

I'm not distressed by people not answering but by the hostile behaviour that is shown here. If you feel offended by my post than please simply ignore it.
I would not have asked and posted the questions here if I had found the answers in the piles of books I own about racing or if I had found any useful websites. I have already done what you call research for many hours into these questions and a lot of the 54 questions I know myself, but I am way to young to know everything about the early years of F1.
I always try to help others with their questions and I have never felt than anyone has been what you call cheating, maybe you have had other experiences.
And I have never heard about these "Russian quizzes" - what is it?

I apologize for being too naive and believing in the helpfulness of other racefans - the kind of helpfulness I have always been giving.

If anyone doesn't want to share their knowledge, they can keep it, but being this hostile is absolutely new to me. It makes me sad.

I think I've seen the explanation of reasons for calling the car Scarab on TNF, so some digging should provide an answer.

JtP- scarab is a sort of beetle (it's English, not Mexican, name) that rolls balls of dung around (I'm sure they have a good reason for it, but it escapes me ATM) with their hind legs while standing on front legs (they moved backwards when pushing their smelly little balls). They figured quite prominently in Egyptian mythology, where they were sacred creatures that rolled the Sun around heavens. For example, faraoh woud turn back (even with the whole Egyptian army following him) if scarab crossed his path.

Guys, at least, let's give Pebbles the credit for stating his intentions. I think it's OK the way he did it- who wants to help can do so, but he isn't trying to trick anyone into giving him quiz answers.

Can you explain what Stuck is doing here? I am rather interested by all new theories!

Oh really?

so it's got to be Danny Ongais with his Cart car.

...which would have been in 1978.

Funny, isn't it, how the completely incapable bloke is now looking favourite.

Hmm, let me see... Ah yes. April 20th, 1980 the International Trophy. Won by - my, my - Eliseo Salazar in a Williams FW07.

And with fastest lap too, of 1m17.84.

Thank you very very much!!!!!! The pennies were my guess, too, would fit the crowd in Silverstone. I wouldn't assume anyone there throwing strawberries or even stealing parts of the car like it's done in Monza after the race, doesn't sound like British behaviour. Bu the pennies are rather funny even.

One of the answers for the Scarab questions is that the Americans wanted to take the mickey of the macho and exotic names of some other race teams by chossing a name for a certain kind of beetle, so that would come closest. But I'll try to che check that somewhere else, too, but it's hard to find information about those small teams.

Hmmm, about the 1980 question I found this information:
1980 International Trophy
20 April - Silverstone: 165.116 km (4.718 km x 35 Laps)

Fastest Lap: Eliseo Salazar Williams FW07 - Cosworth DFV 1m17.84
Pole Position: Eliseo Salazar Williams FW07 - Cosworth DFV 1m18.18

Results:
1 Eliseo Salazar Williams FW07 - Cosworth DFV 35 laps

And nothing in that direction about Danny Ongais, but will keep on looking.

Thanks once again for the fast help!!!!

I guess you're right, the ones we've previously knocked out didn't state that they were getting answers to quizzes...

My apologies, pebbles. But I daresay the clues you've seen down the page about what happened at Silverstone might tell you something.

Apologies accepted ;-) I always check answers I get at least twice somewhere else, but it's hard if there are no clues at all. Earlier this year the same mag had one of these quizzes already and I got 50 out of 54 correct, hard work, but on some of them I could only guess, it was impossible to fnd the correct answers. I don't think I'll get as many answers right this time coz it's even harder but I want to try at least.

First: it is Chuck Daigh
Second: the Scarabs began to race in 1958 and not 1960
Third: always the same with the quiz and the same childish reactions: "Oh it is a quiz no answer" and ten minutes after: "question 1 the answer is...Question two don'you think that..."
Always the same. What are you fellows?

A brief check around various threads here and you'll soon see how helpful people will be... if you look at the 1939 European Championship thread you'll see International co-operation on a scale challenging the allied efforts in WW2!

Anyway, you might find something interesting on this page:

http://8w.forix.com/scarab.html

Jean-Maurice... why didn't you also correct Reventlow?

Where do you find us hostile? Of course we are not obliged to answer you but after all who are you? You are a member of this forum from december 26th 2004...what is the date today? Usually new members don't enter this forum asking answer for a quiz! What is the prize for the winner (if there is one) and if you win will you share it with us? You think you are too naive but do you think we have to be? Do you think that because you enter this forum today we a have to give you what you cannot or are not able to find? But it is only a personnal point of view...and I'm not hostile, simply realistic.

Dunno. Part of me still thinks it is cheating. But then part of me thinks using initiative is good and so long as the answers are openly posted then others can see them too.

I also think we will tire real fast if TNF (again) becomes known as a place for quizzees to join, ask questions and not contribute.

If you read pebbles' original post, this relates to an F1 quiz. The F1 Scarab first appeared at Monaco in 1960.

a) Sorry but in French Personal is with 2 "n" hence my error, not a typo. But in French or in English or in Russian Chuck is Chuck and Reventlow is Reventlow!!
b) The origin of Scarab is 1958 even if the quiz refers to 1960.
But I agree to give the lady a break.

The original 1960 question was: "Why did **** Daigh and Lance Rentlow [sic] call their car "Scarab"?
It does not ask either when a Scarab first raced, or when it was named. The question has a perfectly legitimate connection with F1 in 1960.

I solemnly swear that nige and I didn't get any answers from here for the 10tenths quiz (this year). Least i can't remember hitting the TNF in our 10hour marathon :D

My attitude is if the quiz has a prize then its a no go begging for answers, If it doesn't then fair enough but search first, two of the above are searchable in this forum and i'm pretty sure a third is googlable.

To answer the Villeneuve/Pironi question thats easy. Gilles loved Cheeseburgers so he wasn't a vegetarian. He drank wine, as my avatar clearly shows Gilles sharing a bottle of Giacobazzi with Enzo Ferrari.

So it must be that he could not stop calling his wife all the time as Gilles was a devoted family man.

I just remembered it was a foriegn driver and memory failed me. There were many press complaints at the time of employing a foriegn driver, but Sommer was the most experienced driver on the BRM payroll.

Couldn't remember the exact year of the Cart visit, afterall soe of us do not use search engines to answer quizes. Btw i got banned from the West of Scotland car club quiz.

If Salazar won, even using a Williams FW07, it must have been a Formula Ford race for everyone else.

Hmmm... Well, they can't possibly have banned you for answering questions correctly. Nor, for that matter, would they have banished you for your input of 'knowledgable' and 'informed' comment.

Strangely, however, the fact that you were banned doesn't overly surprise me...

pebbles, let me give you look at other side of the story as I was one involved in so called 'Russian quizzes case'.

Several years ago Russian magazine Formula had a quiz with quite good for ordinary Russian fan prize of any F1 race trip. There were some quiz participants who discovered great TNF members knowledge and tried to use them to get correct quiz answers. We suspect that Samuelson, Co@l, vvpupkin and few other nicknames belonged to the same person. His (their) topics were finally thrown out the forum but I stored some of them on my PC. It looked like this.

Hmm, probably not. I suspect the GPD is fully pre-occupied running his own, large business. What's the job description of Dallara at Sauber?

He is head of the test team.

Sauber launched its 2003 website and Dallara is on it now. Apparently his name is written Giampaolo Dall'Ara and he doesn't look like 'other' Dallara at all...

Sorry about the confusion.

On second thoughts, lets see if I've got this question right.

Motor racing flags:

Green - grid ready (or GO!!!!)
Blue - move over and allow the car behind to pass
Red - Race stopped
Yellow - Danger; slow down at this point and do not overtake
Black - You are disqualified
Black with Orange Spot - make a pit stop, your car is in a dangerous condition
Black/Orange diagonals - oil on the track
Black/White chequer - race over

I know there are variations on this (full course yellow, waved and stationary etc.) but I think this is the basic jist of what our friend Samuelson is after.

I also know that there are probably some I've missed (didn't the OIL flag used to be White?), but it's getting late for me, and I'm sure someone out there will fill in the blanks.

Hmmm - I read the question as ''when were flags first used?'', but I guess your reading, RX1, is more logical.

On the link given - the driver seated in the car in the right-hand picture is David Brabham, I think. The blond guy sitting on the car looks a little bit like Ari Vatanen, but I can't think of any good reason why it should be him!

Yep, does look like Ari (I don't know why he should be there either - Swedish GP?), but I did think the guy on the right of the first pic looked a bit like J-P Jabouille ('specially with those Red/White/Blue cans on).

These questions are from expert quiz of Russian "Formula" magazine. Samuelson is a very clever person, because he don't want to think himself. Really, why? It's very simple to asked TNF'ers these questions... Clever decision from Samuelson! But is it honestly? What do you think, Samuelson?

And I want to ask all members from TNF don't post answers on Samuelson's questions at these topic, because there are some people who used another's knowedge.

Why don't I believe you, samuelson? Maybe because you wrote the name of your ''native'' town incorrectly (''Praha'' in Czech, ''Prague'' in English)? Or because I know your real name? Well, it doesn't really matter, I just don't want to speak to you. But I have to say a pair of words to all TNFers to clarify the situation with this quiz.

So what do you know about russian ''Formula'' magazine? (Besides you are every now and then asking questions from its experts' competition, of course ). I'm afraid, not too much. What a pity! I believe ''Formula'' is the most competent and authoritative magazine about Formula One in the post-soviet expance. I even think that ''Formula'' is much better then conceptually similar ''Formula 1'' and ''F1 Racing''! (Don't be upset, you have ''MotorSport'' at least, so the things are not so bad ). No wonder, the questions in the annual ''Formula'' experts' quiz are very complex, sometimes even for TNFers! That's why I need very much time to find some answers. My personal time! For example in case with Philippe Streiff in AGS it was more then a week! And now I come across samuelson's questions and what I see? He got correct answers in the next few hours! So easy... But tell me, is it fair? Well, I don't give a damn about his behaviour, because I believe, the winner will be fair player like me (4th place in 2002 competition), Dracula (last year winner, the best Formula One amateur expert in Russia, who didn't need foreign brain to win!) or Kvadrat (11th place in 2002). But I'm sorry about my lost time and I'm sorry that many fair players will get fewer points then people like samuelson, Cat, poorboy and Coal@ – they all asked you different questions from ''Formula'' quiz.

I won't to ask you not to give answers them like my good friend Oleksa from Ukraine – it's useless, because they can register new nicknames and will continue to make their bad deal. I see also, there is no sense in our idea to warn you if somebody asks you another question: we're not able to be constantly in this forum and to prevent unfair play before you make the life of these ''experts'' easier. So that's my proposal: I will publish here in TNF the questions from the next rounds to you could know, which questions you shouldn't answer. Well, what I can give you in exchange for it? In June in russian motorsport forum starts my first serious historical project, telling about car racing in Russia through 1898-1914 and I also plan to write this story in TNF. I know, there were some similar threads here, but I promise you: more complete and reliable info you will get nowhere. So what you say about it?

As to samuelson... If he doesn't want I inform ''Formula'' editorial of his deeds and his real name, he better stops ''to help his russian friends'' or else he will be disqualified.

I know a man in Hawaii who will be delighted with this... I predict you'll be getting e.mails from him in short order!

But, as Vitesse says, TNFers being TNFers, they will probably answer anyway.

Unless, of course, the agreement of many is reached and perhaps the thread is locked so that no responses can be made. It would have to, in that case, be a 'sticky' so it remains on the front page.

When the contest is over, then the thread could be unlocked and follow the normal course...

How would that sit with others?

Sounds a sensible solution to me. 8W was essentially self-policing, but even so topics often came up in unrelated ways, as Mattijs, Leif and Felix know well! ISTR a South American quiz a while back which generated a number of odd queries too.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I don't see what the problem is.

If you are taking part in a quiz which is designed to be difficult, then you must surely use any resource available to obtain the answers.

I have answered many a question, on many a forum; sometimes from my own knowledge, sometimes through research (books, magazines, internet etc), and sometimes I just asked someone else.

It's just like "Who Wants To be A Millionaire?"

We all have the chance to 'Phone A Friend', it's just that on this forum we have the chance to 'Phone A Thousand Friends', and what's wrong with that?

I mentioned 8W above - it was an Internet quiz, yet participants were fair enough to each other not to use TNF or anywhere else to find the answers: there are several former winners around here, including me It was all done through sheer hard work and research, believe me! I spent God knows how many hours on it ....

And here's an answer from Felix which I think sums up the general feeling. It was made in response to a blitz of questions from a new poster last year. Not, AFAIK, quiz questions, but nevertheless I like Felix's answering machine simile!

Dracula and .ru,

Does this quiz give prizes or is it only for prestige?

If it is for a prize, it is very difficult to say whether it is wrong for Samuelson to use every means available to him.

If it is for prestige, then Samuelson will know he has cheated and the position he has is false. And if you know his name then you should inform the organisers of the quiz and publish his name here as well.

Either way, Samuelson should be honest with us and say it is for a quiz.

I agree wholeheartedly with the Vitesse / Ray Bell idea of a locked thread until the competition closing date.

Prizes and prestige. For me it's prestige first of all.

Incorrect comparison, Simson RX1. Try to imagine: a man, ''who wants to be a millionaire'', phones and phones and phones his thousand friends instead to think on one's own. So what's checking – his knowledge or knowledge of his thousand friends?

Not everyone... But if someone has Internet access, he has also all chances to find the correct answers without a help of TNFers.

The winner will get a Grand Prix journey... But for me it's more likely a competition to gain recognition and respect of my friends and not because of prizes. What's more, I'm sure would be this quiz without an incentive bonus, you would see here any post of samuelson...

By the way, D-Type, did I understand you correct? ''All means are good for a win'', right? If so, this is beyond me. I thought, the time of Machiavelli is gone... Or isn't?

Just for note. He said: ''Fair players have any chances to win such quiz'' (originally posted in Russian). Of course you can say to me: ''Man, if you want to stay fair player and you think you are so smart to find the correct answers independently, what's the problem with you? Don't ask us like other, don't read TNF and your conscience will be clear.'' Sorry, I can't. And until exists unfair play, I will fight it.

Well, must be enough to talk about ethical questions. I see the idea of a locked thread has found favour with many TNFers. That's what we will do.

How far can you accept "Win at all costs"? I think that Senna and Schumacher were wrong to drive into competitors but I can understand why they did it. Similarly if there is a prize I can understand a competitor using every source of information but I do not think that samuelson's approach is right. It is a question of ethics and good manners. There are serious researchers who read TNF and I do not think it is fair to waste their time to obtain answers for a quiz. When posting the question samuelson should have been honest and said it was to help him win a prize in a quiz. Then people can decide whether they will respond.

The first prize for the quiz is F1 Grand Prix visit and this is very important and valuable for the former SU fans because most of us can't find neccessary money and go to even closest European countries for any F1 event. So if someone wants to win at any cost I can understand this but will never approve such a behaviour. It's VERY VERY VERY bad and unfair.

I never asked any expert during my quiz participation and spent a lot of time to find correct answers. And those answers were MY ones. And 11 place was MY place. Yes, I used TNF but I never asked any TNF experts to find me any information for quiz.

One of quiz threads is still here: I need the photo.

Finally look at the beginning of this thread: The X-Pics.

That's Russian quiz story. I think now TNFers reaction's reasons are clear for you.

Being person suffered from Russian quiz story I'm sure that we shouldn't just answer or ignore such a quiz questions. Everybore who has required information should know what he supports if answers questions.

Samuelson and Co did not get any prize for their tricks but after that every unfair quiz suspicions here are connected with Russians and knowing it isn't pleasure for me.

pebbles, if other players of your quiz find your attempts of simple using experts for getting answers instead of personal research, they could ban you and your name can became synonymous to unfair playing.

Hmmm... Well, they can't possibly have banned you for answering questions correctly. Nor, for that matter, would they have banished you for your input of 'knowledgable' and 'informed' comment.

Strangely, however, the fact that you were banned doesn't overly surprise me...

Well Twinny, I see you are a free lance rally driving instructor. Those who can do and those who can't teach.

And he was bloody incapable in the Scandia Ferrari 333SP in WSC as well :p

Word for the original poster, would you walk into a room of complete strangers and ask them to use their knowledge to help you win something and then just wander off having been given the info? I suspect you wouldn't but this is exactly what you are doing. Just because it's the internet doesn't mean you are not communicating with other human beings, and it certainly doesn't mean standards of common courtesy are any lower.

Won a couple more races in that 1980 Aurora series - against some pretty well known bods and machinery. Bloody fast FF's too - seemed to mostly use a 3.0 litre Ford engine rather than a 1600. :p

I didn't think Ray or Richard were being rude or offensive in any way at all in their original responses. In fact, they were perfectly appropriate reposts and, to my mind, remain so.

Thank you, kind sir!

Pebbles did at least have the decency to inform us up front that she was taking part in a quiz, unlike our Russian "friends" who would deny it point blank when accused. I chose to confirm one of her guesses, but I wasn't going to make it too easy!

As Sergey's post makes clear, my reaction to this was very different to my approach to the Russians, where I tried to give misleading answers if at all possible. Some of you have probably never seen that stuff before, since it was usually very quickly deleted!

Well, the thing is that this girl seems to know a few things herself... she did say that she's answered 50 out of 54 questions herself.

So pebbles is not silly at all. She'll be back and no doubt will be a contributor at times as well as a lurker and one that makes us scratch our collective heads for a while.

Just the kind we need...

I think you read the quote you used out of context, Ben. And unfortunately very little of your above statement is accurate.

if very little is accurate, which parts are not?

"he" is really a she?

the driver never suffered contusions, cuts or scrapes, making him (her?) bloody?

Scandia was never involved?

the car was not a 333SP?

the car was not even a Ferrari?

The car, which may not have been a Ferrari, was not raced in the WSC?

There wasn't a car at all?

Ben Misspelled "WSC"?

the driver was not as incapable in what may not have even been a car that might not have been raced in the WSC as he (she? ) was in another series?
Actually, I think Bens post, like mine was meant to be a joke. I'll add more smiley faces than he did.

:) :) :) :rotfl: :) :) :)

As far as I can remember, he did just the one race with Andy Evans in a Scandia Ferrari 333SP, when he finished fourth at Dallas in 1996.

His only (almost) complete season of IMSA was 1994 in a MOMO Ferrari 333SP, when he won three races from seven starts in a nine race series, and scored his wins from consecutive pole positions.

Those facts do, to my mind, make Ben's remark somewhat inaccurate.
