Researching as I am the life and work of Ferdinand Porsche, I have run across Philip Bouhler, who became Hitler's Chief of Chancellery in 1934. Least savory of Bouhler's activities was his office's management of the Nazi's euthanasia program.

I'm bringing Bouhler into our forum because one reference to him said that he dedicated some of his spare time to "motor racing". I haven't been able to find any references to him in my files of the period. Thus I wonder whether anyone has spotted Bouhler in any results of the period, such as hillclimbs and reliability runs. If he was so active, Bouhler would have been a useful conduit between Porsche and Hitler.

Any tips and hints greatly appreciated, and best wishes to all for a great 2005!

Like Ferdinand Porsche, Philipp Bouhler was a member of the ONS. In that capacity he must have been involved in motor sports.

Thanks a lot for this tip. Do we have any information on ONS membership? When they joined and that sort of thing?

Bouhler's NSDAP membership number was 12 - he was one of the original Nazi Party members.

Bouhler was part of the original group of Reichsleiter, appointed June 2nd 1933, along with such Nazi luminaries as Goebbels, Röhm, Himmler and Rosenberg. (Our old friend Hühnlein was the last confirmed appointee to Reichsleiter on Feb 2nd 1938).

If you haven't already checked it, Karl, I understand there is a profile of him in Robert Wistrich's
"Who's Who in Nazi Germany", which has gone through three editions in the last 20 years and is fairly easy to find (108 copies on ABEbooks at the moment!)

A couple of pictures:

The fat chap in the white uniform is Robert Ley.

I may be able to find more information. Please PM me if interested.

Members of the ONS

The Oberste Nationale Sportbehörde für die Deutsche Kraftfahrt (ONS) was established in September 1933, combining the Oberste Nationale Sportkommision (ONS) of the Automobilclub von Deutschland (AvD), and the Oberste Motorsport-Behörde (OMB) of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC). Formally, the ONS ceased to exist In May 1945. But I suspect that the institution had already been dormant for several years.

Adolf Hühnlein – Corps leader Nationalsozialistisches Kraftfahrkorps (NSKK) (1933-1942)

When Adolf Hühnlein died in June 1942, Erwin Kraus became the new NSKK leader. I wonder whether he was also supposed to succeed Hühnlein as president of the ONS.

Philip Bouhler was an SS Brigadefuhrer while Werner Lorenz was an SS Obergruppenfuhrer. I have no details on what happened to them after the war.

If someone has access to Der Kraftfahrsport im neuen Deutschland, please check page 113 to see if this ONS publication of 1935 sheds more light on the subject.

In this work, edited by Alfred Meurer, there should be a chapter Kraftwagensport, written by sports journalist Reinold Otte, mentioning Bouhler’s active involvement in motorsport.
