Robin Richards is apparently still around ...

http://www.brdc.co.u.../2/member_id/67

As is Gillie Tyrer:

http://www.brdc.co.u.../2/member_id/92

And so is Don Truman:

http://www.brdc.co.u.../2/member_id/75

However that comes with the caveat that at least two of the BRDC members listed in the index (Ian Connell and Patsy Burt) are no longer with us. So the page may not be regularly updated :

@ Richard: The BRDC site is the place I took the birth dates from. But as you say the absence of a death date does not necessarily mean the person is still alive.

1) Are the following people still alive?

Jésus Iglesias (1922), Robert la Caze (1917), Bob Ansell (1917), Johnny Kay are all believed to be - in such, I haven't found a death reported or date yet.
Alfonso Thiele, I suspect, is dead but no proof yet.

USA:
Curtis Attaway Jr. (1923) d. Nov 1982,
Fred Bince (1923) d.16/11/2001,
Clint Brawner (1916), d. 23/11/87, phoenix, Arizona
Leland Colvin (1914), d. 22/1/1995, Camden, South Carolina
Len Fanelli (1912) d. Jul 1981, Tarpon Springs, Florida

2) From the following ones the dates of death are missing:

Red Shafer (1896) d. 29 Jan 1971, Des Moines, Iowa

Allan Staniforth is thankfully still with us. He celebrated his 80th birthday in 2004 and is still hillclimbing and sprinting his home built Megapin race car.

From part 1:

Dan Carmichael, Nick Fornoro, Louise Smith and A. J. Watson are all still alive. Carmichael was actually still club racing in Formula Atlantic as recently as 2000. Ted Chamberlain died in 1968, sorry I don't have a date. Johnny Thomson (no P in his last name) died September 24, 1960.

From part 2:

"Papa Joe" Hendrick died on July 15, 2004.

From part 3:

Dana Carter died sometime in May 1983, sorry I don't have the exact date. Gary Gabelich died January 26, 1984.

For some of the more unusual US names you could try searching the US Social Security Death Index here . I just did a search for Walter Sobraske, it gives a date of birth. 4/1/1901, but only the month of death Oct 1981.

I guess the more common names are going to throw up too many results.

Great! It already worked for Bill Amick (died 15 July 1995), Overton "Bunny" Phillips (died 01 April 1999) and Louis "Red" Vogt (died 07 March 1991).

ReWind,

To save you some time, I've got info on several of those you listed (including Amick) that I've already compiled from the same source. I'll post them soon.

Here's what I have...

Ben Lalomia (29 Mar 1919 - 12 May 1999)
Russell Bennett (29 Dec 1920 - 27 Aug 1996)
Ed Brown (15 Mar 1920 - 25 Jun 2000)
Bill Chevalier (15 Feb 1922 - 26 Sep 2001)
Paul "Wimpy" Ervin (24 Dec 1917 - Feb 1987)
Elar "Tubby" Gonzales (21 Oct 1919 - 17 Aug 1989)
"Bud" Koehler (15 Feb 1921 - 21 Apr 2003)
Wes Morgan (24 Nov 1922 - 28 Nov 1994)
Tommy Thompson (22 Apr 1922 - 04 Aug 1996)
Ken Wagner (19 Sep 1917 - Mar 1981)

There is Johnny Thomson, Indy driver from the 50's (died 1960) and Johnny Thompson, NASCAR driver. So the date you've put down is correct for the former, but isn't the one you were asking about.

Bill Amick 15 Jul 1995
John Rostek 29 Dec 1969 plane crash

I'm hoping to finally dig into the boxes of papers and pin down the following...

Bill Baker (Aug 1978), Dana Carter (1980s), Jim Cook (1980s) - not Jim V., Jim Robinson (1990s). Baker and Robinson should be no difficulty and at least I have a lead on Jim Cook.

Ed Hessert could prove tough as he was declared legally dead. Not much hope of an exact date.

As of last notice, Dick Beaty, Ernie Derr, Erick Erickson are still with us, though Erickson is in poor health.

Did he and Dick Ferguson ever resolve their feud?

Earl, thanks for the date on Dana Carter.

Bill Baker (Aug 12 1978) - heart attack practicing for NASCAR WGN at Sears Point
Jim Cook (Nov 26 1983) - murdered
Jim Robinson (Dec 1995)

I'll have to dig deeper to get a date on Robinson.

A further question if I may,
does it say where Dana died & also did it double confirm where he was born? I'm searching re. his nq for the Indy 500. (which means I may have a fair few queries for you folks soon......)

Don't have it with me since I'm at work, but I just picked up a 1983 USAC yearbook, it mentioned him having some sort of attack (medical, not assault) in his home. I'll dig it up when I get home.

No mention of birthplace, but it says he died at Methodist Hospital after falling ill at home. Not sure where the heart attack actually occured though.

The 1980 CART media guide mentions birthplaces/hometowns of no driver.

I might be wrong but I remember his thinkings of Porsches and article being illustrated by pics of him in 550 Spyder... Sadly I didn't catch the details and forgot the must but there was more of his Post-WWII races during Communism than of ones before...

And to help those keeping more detailed records...

Bill Baker (Aug 12 1978) - died at Novato, CA hospital after suffering heart attack practicing for NASCAR WGN at Sears Point (occurred on Saturday, the day before the race). Had raced F5000 and switched to WGN for '78 to reduce travel. From Pismo Beach, California. Didn't begin racing until 41 years of age.

Ed Brown (15 Mar 1920 - 25 Jun 2000) - Edwin O. Brown. Died in hospital in either Yuba City or Marysville, CA (I have an obituary around here....somewhere). Long time Stock Car racer on the West Coast, starting out racing Hardtops and Track Roadsters around Northern California. Competed on the NASCAR Western circuit for many years (through it's name change from PCLM to WGN). Raced out of the small town of Meridian, California on the Sacramento River.

Jim Cook (Nov 26 1983) - murdered. I still have no info confirming exactly where Jim Cook was living at the time, which is why I had trouble finding anything on him. I did recall the sad news of him being murdered by a drifter who broke into his apartment. He had been wheelchair bound since his terrible accident in the NASCAR GN race at Riverside in January 1970. Another long time Stock Car racer on the West Coast, successful both on Southern California short tracks and on the NASCAR PCLM circuit.

John Rostek (29 Dec 1969) plane crash at Vermillion, SD. Wreckage was found in woods off end of runway on Dec 31 1969, but investigators figured the crash happened on take-off on the 29th. Rostek was from Fort Collins, Colorado and won the 1960 'Copper Cup' 100 mile NASCAR GN race on the 1 mile dirt oval at the Arizona State Fairgrounds. He also competed on the USAC Stock Car circuit.

After looking at the yearbook I'm afraid there's not anything else I can add. It merely says he "had passed away in May after suffering an attack at his home."

George G. "Pete" Henderson
Born February 18, 1895 in Arran, Ontario.
Died June 19, 1940 in Los Angeles, California.

Ben Lalomia was an American who often raced in Canada, not a Canadian.

Since I recently came to know the birth dates of Australian Harry Firth (b. 18 Apr 1918) and (thanks to Hugo Boecker) Hanns Roth (b. 09 Aug 1911) from Germany I added these two names to the first part in the opening post of this thread.

On this occasion I would like to thank all contributors to this thread so far. As you can see in my edited opening post numerous questions already have been answered.

@ Alessandro: From Leif's website I have Gino Cornaggia-Medici's birthday as October, 3rd. Is October, 30th, water-proof?

According to the index of Robert Dick's book "Mercedes and Auto Racing in the Belle Epoque" Max Sailer died in 1964.

Anyone out there who knows month and day?

After checking your list again, I saw Ted Chamberlain's name. Chamberlain died in 1968, but that's all I know.

The book "La Saga dei Marzotto", published in 2003 by Giorgio Nada Editore stated that Vittorio Marzotto died 4 February 1999, aged 76 (born Friday 13 June 1922).

At the time of publication of the book, the other three racing Marzotto brothers were still living.

Only today have I first looked at this thread. When I saw the name Harry Firth (Australia) I assumed someone would already have answered, but a look through the responses indicates this is not so.

"H" is still alive and ornery. A local model car company (Biante Model Cars) has been making very accurate (Made in China) scale models of the touring cars of the era when Firth ran the Holden Dealer Team and Harry has been earning a nice dollar in royalties. He helps with information to ensure accuracy of such things as decals and minor details, and also contributes to the histories that are written to go with the models.

Harry also contributes information and does some proof reading of stories that are relevant to him for a magazine called Australian Muscle Car, which has some very detailed and accurate stories of Australian touring car racing history.
