Evening everyone.

I have been asked by a friend to source some colour photos of Matti Kamalainen's Gulf sponsored group 2 Ford escort which he raced in Scandinavia (and occasionally here in the UK) in the years 1971, 1972, 1973. He wants to market a 1/43 model of the car which should look great in its blue and orange.

For UK members he was usually seen at Brands Hatch at either the August Bank Holiday or the October meeting that was the final round of the British Saloon Car Championship and may have appeared at other British tracks as well.

I certainly saw him race in those years at Brands and remember him well, but I never bothered to take photos of the car (if I knew then what I know now! ).

Any help will be much appreciated.

Glyn

I don't know if this is the car but I took this photograph at the 1972 Race of Champions meeting.

I think the driver you mean is Matti J. Kemiläinen, who drove Gulf Escort in Finland.

Here is couple pictures that I found from net:

Todays colours

I have a b/w photocopy of an article in Finnish about that particular car, IIRC. Let me know if you're interested. My Finnish is weak, btw...

Hi there G2 Escort spotters,

If I remember correctly, there were two brothers racing in England with Gulf-liveried Escorts:
Matti and Heikki Kemilainen, one with a 2-litre RS 1600, the other with a 1300cc Escort GT.
The 1300cc car also had the 16-valve BDA head, which by about 1973, had been homologated in the 1300 GT for use in G2.

Glyn, who's doing these 1:43 Escorts?

mikko-ville, does the the Todays colours link, show one the Gulf cars current livery?

You remember correctly :)

Both links show same car, Matti Kemiläinen's RS 1600. Photo in todays colour link is not very good, but that is indeed cars current livery. Althought I have faint recollection that it might have been crashed in historic race last year, so I'm not sure about the current situation.

Thanks everyone for such a quick response, the results are better than I could have hoped for.

Mikko-ville - could you drop me a PM please as I would like to copy the photos on the "original colours" link and would like to get the owners permission to do so. Thanks also for correcting my spelling

Carlos Guerra - Thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten that Mattis' team mate was his brother, I have lost a few programmes and couldn't think who it was. Trofeu is the company that my contact has lined up to make the model, should look good if it gets the go-ahead.

David - Sorry but your link is the log-in page for photobucket and I couldn't get any further, a shame as I would be very interested in any photos that you have from the BSCC from that era.

Frank - Thanks for the offer, don't worry my Finnish is just as bad, despite having spent a week there in 1983 for the 1000 Lakes. The locals who befriended us advised us to speak English only as their own language was far too difficult to learn for a simple Brit! (And it hardly made a difference after a few drinks at the post rally party anyway)

The photo is nowhere near as useful as the paddock shot on the original colours link but here it is.

David.

Thanks for posting the photo, you do yourself a dis-service, it is an excellent shot, may I pass it on for use in making the model?

Nice to see a shot of Zak Redjeps car, was he the hairiest man in British motorsport  . I think he still has a car dealership in Lewisham, haven't been that way for years though, so I could be wrong.

Many thanks

Hi Glyn,

The Trofeu model is indeed an excellent basis.
Trofeu have recently re-done themselves the Frank Gardner 1968 Motor Show 200 Alan Mann Twin Cam XOO 349F.
It is now fully painted, with details on the correct places, it has a lower stance, much better overall.
At the same time they lauched the Jackie Stewart/Chris Craft 1970 TT Broadspeed Twin Cam EVX 248H.
It is all absolutely correct except... that the red is totally wrong. They have used the same red as seen in the Alan Mann car instead of Broadspeed's Rolls Royce Metallic Regal Red.
Glyn, what can I do not to miss the Gulf-liveried car when it comes out?

Edward.

You are the same Edward I remember being introduced to by John Redding then, small world isn't it! How is your model collecting going? My collection gets bigger and bigger each year despite only concentrating on Spa 24 hours, BSCC and RAC Rally (Cannot call it Rally of GB, something to do with Trade Descriptions etc  ) Watch fsw in the next few weeks,it appears that I am going to be back in print for the first time in many years.

On the collecting theme I am interested in any photos anyone has of the saloon cars from the era of 1967-1973, please let me know if you are prepared to let me have copies etc.

Carlos.
I will trawl through some web sites and copy a link to you, then you should be able to buy the model as soon as it arrives.
I also remember seeing your countryman Uriartes and Barrios racing their Broadspeed Escort in the 1973 TT, do you have any good colour photos of this (the silver/orange car and the red/white (is this Barrios car?) Escort raced in 1973.

I too have seen the 1970 Broadspeed car and agree that it is an embarrasing mistake by Trofeu. The 1971 Broadspeed car by Trofeu is very good though (depicts the car at the Race of Champions) and is on the shelf.

Thanks again to you all for the help.

Hi Glyn,

Thanks for the forthcoming info.
Jose Maria Uriarte and Rafael Barrios are spanish, I am portuguese.
If I am not mistaken Barrios is the driving force behind Fly Model Cars, who specialize in excellent 1:32 slot car models of historic sports cars and has also produced four absolutely superb 1966 & 1967 G7 Lola T70 variations in 1:43 a while back.
Joan Albert Larrosa, the former creator of the 1:43 Jal43 range is the man behind those 1:43 Fly Model productions.

Barrios and Uriarte raced together at Vila Real in 1973 with their Broadspeed-built RS 1600's and Uriarte at Estoril in '72.
Have to check which photos I may have.
But I have recently drawn them... in the PC...

Carlos.

My apologies, if I had read your reply properly I would have realised that you were Portugese and not Spanish.

I will find a link for you and post it as promised.

Interesting to see what Barrios is up to these days, I never realised.

Thanks for looking up the photos etc.

Glyn, some pictures (by your countryman Robert Clayson) of the Silvert/Orange Escort are on my site at the 1973 Silverstone section - in case you haven't spotted them already.

No worry Glyn,

Forgot to tell which is which:
Uriarte: Orange & Silver
Barrios: Red & White

Another stunning Escort seen in Portugal at the Estoril first race in 1972, was the Erik Høyer Ford Denmark RS 1600.
Remember this one? Erik also raced the same car occasionally in the BSCC.

Carlos.
Thanks for clearing up the colours of the two Spanish Escorts. I also remember Erik Hoyer Escort, but I cannot for the life of me remember what colour it was etc.

Frank.
Spotted the photo of the Uriarte car (eventually), I just forgot that the photo was there.
