Hey everyone,

Its Melbourne GP time again and there are quite a few Atlas members (from all over the world) who will be in Melbourne for the big race.

Therefore, Mat and I were chatting today and have decided to try and get as many Atlas members together for a Meet and Greet (which we couldnt do last year).

Location and Time:

Metropol Bar
60 Fitzroy St, St Kilda 3182 VIC,
(03) 9534 5999 (or +61 3 9534 5999)
http://www.metropolbar.com.au/

Friday 4th March - 6pm.

Please note that Mat and I will be at the Metropol for most of the night - so if you are not there by 6pm - fear not as we can still be found there - though dont blame us if we are slurring and barely able to walk ;)

I'll be contacting each of those that have signed in via PM to give you mine and Mat's phone numbers.

I'll keep a running list of who can make it:

gerry nassar
Mat
Asterix
armchair expert
SchuOz
Full Monty
DaveofOz
A wheel Nut
Clipper
Sith
275 GTB-4
Knightrider
Patrick Fletcher
Sean Valen
pilla
dworsham
f1fan2

Edit - UPDATE : Please also see Mat's post below for the map

Remember it wont be too late to sign in until friday. Even if you havnt signed in and want to join in - please feel free to drop in

Look forward to seeing all the Atlas'ers!

Metrapol has a nice open area to sit down and drink, and have a meal as well. It should be good. Its on the outskirts of the circuit, so its close.

First time I'm missing Melbourne GP since the very first year. Its going to suck, but you get that sometimes. I'll just have to psych myself up for a big 2006 GP. Have fun at the GP fellow Atlasarians.

Trams are free for the grand prix at least the shuttles to the track are. But you can put on a broken english euro accent and say you thought all of the public transport was free on the grand prix weekend when inspectors pull you up for a ticket

like last year I am arriving from Sydney the morning of the race, jumping in a cab and going straight in, but staying through for 4 days... sucks I know and wish it was the other way around.

Is there anything going after the race?

Last year I took a free bus down to Crowne Casino and saw some crew playing and drinking...

Only Speights drinkers would complain - all beer in OZ is good - count me in for at least the first hour.

I'm working hard on getting to Melbourne, if I make it, I expect special celebrations, I spend a year thinking and planning silverstone 2005, still going there, and now, out of nowhere, I'm working around the clock trying to get to melbourne, until I'm there it's all smoke and mirrors, but if I make it, giving my fears on being on planes and stuff, leaving cold wet, dreary London at the moment away, to the promise land, the spiritual awakening of Melbourne, if I make it. I wanna buy a parachute for a plane ride, if god wanted men to fly, he would of gave them wings, I'm scared lol.

Sean, just do it!

Think of it as a big bus ride with smaller windows and much cuter conductors (they can be really, really nice to you if you tell 'em you're afraid of flying). If you don't do it, it's something you'll always regret and you'll enjoy Melbourne, despite it being full of Victorians.;)

Besides if God hadn't wanted us to fly he wouldn't have invented aerodynamics.

Thanks for the advice.
Tomorrow is crunch time, just finding the cheapest and best deal, got two websites I'm eyeing. Currently 3:3Oam, spent ages, looking for deals, now I'm close, gonna get some rest, and tomorrow make the important payments, it's all scary to me until I'm in Melbourne lol, the airport, making sure the ticket is there, and right, boarding the plane, no NO, don't think the final desintination film and the plane blowing up, that scene scares the living daylights out of me. But I guess, cars on roads have more accidents, so maybe I'm lucky to have avoided car crashes.
I've been on planes before, last time Florida in 1999, still weird to me. I'll see what happens tomorrow, if there's availability to good deals, then destiny demands I go.

This feels like 24, every hour of action, every second counts.

But Melbourne sounds great, the warm weather out there, formula one, atlas people, this could be something, and I've hyped it up too much, so going over the line of no return, no way out.

ok, spoke to Gerry, and we are confirming a meet up of 6pm at Metropol. Keep that in mind, its Metropol with an 'o', we had been spelling it with an 'a'. Kind of shows you what state im in when i normally go there!

Some info on the place:

Metropol Bar
60 Fitzroy St, St Kilda 3182 VIC,
(03) 9534 5999 (or +61 3 9534 5999)

http://www.metropolbar.com.au/

Now, that green section of the map is the bottom part of the circuit. Canterbury Rd, which you can see on the map, runs parrallel to Gates 1 & 2 and the front straight of the circuit. It would be about a 5 minute walk from gate 1 and about the same from gate 10, which leads out onto fitzroy street. You could also take Tram 96 if you were coming from the northern gates (3, 4 & 5) which would take you right down Canterbury Rd.

Let me know via PM or on here if you need anything. We will be PM'ing you all soon with our mobile numbers just in case, so make sure you check them!

I'm packing and getting set to go, I made the final call, I'm going.

IT'S LIGHTS OUT AT ALBERT PARK, MICHAEL SCHUMACHER LINES UP A UNCOMPETITIVE 3RD, AIMING TO SHUTDOWN THE MCLARENS, RENAULTS GET A FLYER, WILLIAMS ON THE GRASS, WEBBER RECOVERS!!!!!!.

THE tension can be felt already, MS in the modified ferrari, is looking at a tough race, new cars of other teams, can't wait to see this live.

On Friday, be cool to arrange a kart race which I'm eyeing on a Monday maybe, if anyone else is up for that, indoor or out, not that I'm good, just haven't done it since I was 9

Sounds Great! My wife and I will try to make it.
Looking forward to some hot weather and cold beer. It's well below freezin here in Detroit and we've got more than 6 inches of snow. I just got my driveway plowed so I can go to the airport and catch the flight to Melbourne.

If everyone meets up at 6pm

What time are the bars open to? Remember here in UK, London, were not allowed to drink when it reaches 11am I think. Australia I presume is 24 hours, not that I'm gonna stay there that long, but it's nice to know just in the case. :smoking:

Metropol will be open to atleast 1am. I dont think it will be any later than that. But keep in mind, if you are still in a party mood, Fitzroy St is the perfect place to keep on raging. Among others, there is the Mink Bar which will be open to 3am i believe, and there is the night club section of the Prince of Wales hotel, which will be open until the sun rises. There is a heap of cool places on Fitzroy St, but honestly, only a couple that are open all night.

WI-FI is wireless networking so that I can sit in a cafe or in a park or something and do work/check emails, etc. There is nothing worse than a stuffy internet Cafe with sticky keyboards.

It seems that there is a choice between Azure and Boingo, they both seem to have a variety of hot spots around the city. Does anyone know which is better? If there are no differences then I might go with Azure.

For WiFi, most coffee shops, etc in the CBD now have access. There's also a few places along the StKidla foreshore that offer it for patons while you have your beer or coffee.

Also, check out whitepages.com.au, they recently added capabiliy to search WiFi hot spots. Make sure you choose Victoria though.

Ah the Metropol. Last time I was there the line for the toilet was so long - its one toilet, at least I think it is :drunk: - that I ended up going out back, jumping the safety fence and urinating beside the tram track with my mate. He saw the tram coming. I didn't. But the commuters on the packed tram certainly saw me.

I should be able to make it but I might be playing indoor soccer so I might not be able to get there till lateish.

I dunno, I haven't kept up with whats hot in Melbourne, but I remember there being some fine women when I was there last. Hopefully we'll get some of this mid 30's weather for the weekend!
