Villeneuve - The Movie
Feb 24, 2005 09:12 pm - Posted by BenoitLangevin, RIS Staff

MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA - RIS - More than 22 years after his death, a movie about the life of Ferrari's legend Gilles Villeneuve is about to be produced in 2006.

The announcement was made Thursday in Montreal during a press conference in which Jacques Villeneuve, son of Gilles, was present.

The movie which is simply titled 'Villeneuve' will be about the life of Gilles Villeneuve from Berthierville, Quebec, Canada through his tragic death at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. The movie will also cover Jacques' progression until his 1997 Formula One Championship season.

The 30 million dollar movie will be directed by Montrealer Christian Duguay and produced by Toronto-based Capri Films

Duguay approaches the movie using Jacques point of view of his father and he said: "This is a human drama with a backdrop of Formula One racing."

The movie is based on the book "Villeneuve: The Life of the Legendary Driver" written by Gerald Donaldson, a long time Formula One Journalist and Analyst.

At 30 million dollars, I guess movie with actors 'n stuff...

You can probably knock 3 or 4 (or 5!) zeros off the end for a documentary :

Then I for one will give it a pass. Not least because I found the Donaldson biography not very good (I know I'm in the minority on that one though) on the human interest story. E.g. how will they portray Gilles stealing tools in his early career? Donaldson found it ok, because he later regretted it (or something like that from memory).

I found Donaldson's book excellent and if the movie keeps to the theme, it should be a good one!!

Can the James Hunt story be far behind??

Doh!

I searched - I really did. But all I got was a thread from 2003 on a film about Jaques. And it was kinda mocking...

On side note - I read an interesting story today regarding a driving suit belonging to Gilles. The story goes that Gilles handed one of his driving suits to a woman in Quebec shortly before his death. The woman was supposed to sew on a Giacobazzi patch for Gilles and when she heard of his death, she dicide to keep the suit.

Later on, she tried to sell the suit back to the Giacobazzi family for an estimated 2G. They refused and eventually, this came to the attention of the Villeneuve family. They are now trying to get the suit back to them. Others have gotten wind of this and have tried to purchase the suit from this lady.

According to this article, it seems that Gilles widow - Johanne - has no memorabilia whatsoever left of her late husband. That is the family is very keen to get their hands on this important piece of equipment.

I also hear that Jacques has kept amost all of his suit, helmets, etc... from the years and has them numbered.

I guess so. Other than Gilles and his manager, Gaston Parent, I doubt if many people knew the suit was there in the first place.

This is a tough one...
As a Canadian who was fortunate enough to see Gilles win his 1st one in Montreal, back in '78, I am at odds.
Gilles was something different and special, Canadian or not. Does anyone remember his 1st tests with McLaren in '77? It was said, he did a whole lot of spinning to figure out the traction limits of the M23! Gotta love that, ya know?
If it is portrayed as a bio pic, it could be OK.
I have never been a big fan Jacques. No offence intended, by any means. Different time and era.
If this thing is handled with some dignity, it could further raise Gilles' stock. That's what I hope.
As an aside, I remember seeing a very interesting interview with Gilles on the CBC. He was on the cusp of greatness and the way he handled the questions made me like him more. He was very open, smart, polite and funny. If you have the time, go to cbc.ca, look in the archives and you can probably find it.

Cheers!
