Driving along the Chiswick High Road the other day –admittedly for the first time in a number of years - I was upset to see that the famous old wrought-iron railings around Honda’s first UK base (on the corner of Power Road and the High Road) had been replaced with grass and large rocks as it now appears to have become a car showroom for the Japanese manufacturer. (Just like those dreadful garages that sell Jeeps and other “off-road” vehicles in an “off-road” type setting).

For those of us who remember, the word “Honda” was crafted into the iron fencing on the wall around the offices at intervals of every twelve feet or so. I do hope they were kept for posterity.

The Rivet Supply Company – remember them in the late seventies/early eighties? – were also on Power Road I recall – maybe they still are. I didn’t go up there.

Moving further down, I was really quite depressed to find The Chequered Flag Garage is now no more. I know Graham Warner sold up ages ago, but the site is now flats. :(

Even the old Institute of Advanced Motorists building has gone – although in fairness they are still on the High Road in a new building on the other side of the road. Wonder if they kept the Dion Pears original of the sharknose Ferrari that once hung behind their old reception? I tried to buy it from them once after I’d sold them some old green screen computer terminals! They weren’t too impressed!! (Just hope they kept the painting)

Didn’t Alan Jones once get into a punch-up outside the old Chiswick Tandoori?!
Inevitably, that’s gone as well now.

Chiswick once had quite a lot of racing people in its midst.

Remember Connoisseur Carbooks on Devonshire Terrace? Think they moved a long time ago, but I guess Chaters are still in Isleworth, unless that’s now flats as well…

Any memories of Chiswick anybody?

Mark

Apparently turned up to one race with his hand bandaged - claimed that there were several of them trying to relieve him of his wallet and that he'd "given at least as good as he got", or something.

(I think the story's in Roebuck's Grand Prix Greats).

I remember visits to the Chequered Flag but, down towards the Hammersmith end, also to Mr Phang the dentist (believe me)...

1981 Italian GP. Roebuck recycles this story at regular intervals in his Autosport column ISTR.

Well I lived in Stamford Brook, just around the corner from Mr Phang and a mile or so from the Chequered Flag garage. As students we referred to our rented house as being in Chiswick (it sounded posh) although our re-naming of the property "Sea-View" fooled nobody.

Underneath the arches of Stamford Brook tube station you would find Tony Kitchiner who, of course, used to be an employee of Graham Warner. In his "cave" he would be found busy preparing his F3 and F5000 cars...

Hi there

I lived or went to school in Chiswick 1956 -66

I think I remember the Chequered Flag originally being a bit further along. Definitely remember seeing Gemini FJ on display.Later there was(is?) a BMW garage on this site. Further along still was another motoring book shop.

Just before Kew Bridge there was a side street on the left in which Maranello Concessionaires had a workshop - lots of Ferraris to see. Actually at kew Bridge itself, one of the large office blocks was at one time occupied by Bowmakers. I have a vague memory of a Cooper being displayed there at one time.

I once went to the building before the IAM one, which was the Chiswick Empire.

Then again, this was all so long ago that I could be wrong about everything!

I am a local and have been on and off for twenty-five years.

I play snooker occasionally at the end of Power Rd; I think that Rivet Supply Company has closed.

I was surprised when I found that the Car Book Shop on Devonshire Rd had closed; I did buy a few there; I remember a copy of DCN's BRM Vol I in there but I couldn't afford it.

One Sunday morning I sat outside one of the many cafes having parked my car nearby and a very nice chap (whose name I cannot remember I am sorry to say) asked if the Fulvia was mine. We then had a chat and it seems that he used to race in the 1960s and had some entertaining stories including one or two about Gerr Marshall of which there must be many I think.

And in the Tabard ome evening there was a chap wearing a blazer with BRDC badge - I wonder who he was?

The Tabard!

Invariably occupied with all sorts of "individuals" I seem to recall  Certainly remember seeing many racing (and rally) people in there down the years.

There were regular rumours that various "spies" used the place for drop-offs (whatever that means) during the Cold War and after...(even think the place may have been mentioned in a book)...

Yes the Tabard.

Sadly not the pub it was - all the lovely Arts & Crafts hornbeam furniture has gone and one can smoke only in the ghastly right-hand bar with the appalling LOUD television with Association Moronball or whatever so I am now a very infrequent visitor. If I do want a local drink then the pub of choice is the Express on Kew Bridge - best pint of Bass anywhere.

I don't know the area intimately, but don't Grand Prix Racewear have a facility down there? I went to the opening in 1996 and was impressed by the McLaren Peugeot hanging from the ceiling - which I heard recently was immovable! David Kennedy was entertaining folk with chauffeur rides in a Ferrari F40 up and down the dual carriageway, if I have the correct location...

Connoisseur Carbooks are now based at Silverstone, as indeed are GPR, and were at Stoneleigh last weekend.

Yes, indeed!

Used to go in there some weekends before toddling off to watch Brentford play - I'm surprised we were allowed in the ground some weeks looking back

Grand Prix racewear are in Power Road these days - they used to be up the road in Ealing...
