I understand David Piper drove a Lucky Strike liveried Porsche 917 sometime during the 70's.

Does anyone have any photos?

This is the Piper run Porsche 917 # 010, driven by John Love and Dickie Attwood in Kyalami. I believe this is the Lucky Strike 917, but its striking livery can t be seen properly.

This is the team guston 917 driven in Kyalami in 1970. The lucky strike livrery was used in 1971 in kyalami

Sorry, I picked the wrong one ! It ran Lucky Strike livery in 1971, not in 1970. The car was driven by Richard Attwood and Dave Charlton in the Kyalami 9 hrs, but it didn t make it to the finish.

In fact there was two 917 entered by David Piper at Kyalami in 1971 :

#3 (chassis 917/010) driven by attwood and charlton : DNF with engine problem

#4 (chassis 917/021) driven by adamowicz and casoni : 4th

I believe that chassis 917/010, bought by Piper in late 1969, first raced in the 1969 Kyalami 9-Hour sponsored by Coca-Cola.




The car was converted to short tail specification for 1970 and for the 9-Hour race was sponsored by Gunston.




It appeared in the 1971 Kyalami 9-Hour in Lucky Strike Racing colours (#3), one of two 917s entered by Piper for Charlton / Attwood and Casoni / Adamowicz, as mentioned by Stephane.

Does anyone know more of Mario Casoni's activities in the last few years??

I was quite amazed to discover that he'll be driving a Porsche 917 at the Zwartkops historic race meeting in February.

Fly Car Model has just brought out a beautifully detailed 1/32nd scale slot car model of the Casoni / Adamowicz Lucky Strike Porsche 917.

The car is part of Fly's "Circuitos con Historia" series and comes very nicely presented in a box, also containing a booklet with a brief history of the old Kyalami circuit and the 1971 Kyalami 9-Hour race itself, with text by David Piper and photos by David Pearson.





Unfortunately, Fly got it wrong again.... the text on the box refers to the car having competed in the 1970 Kyalami 9-Hour race....
