As a mark of respect for Prince Rainier should this year's Monaco Grand Prix be cancelled? Or can F1 not afford to miss a year for fear of never being allowed to return? Does anyone know what Prince Albert's views on the race are? Should we be worried about its future?

If it was next Sunday they might have cancelled or postponed. But they'll race. Bernie wouldn't allow them otherwise.

It's not for a while. It will be a tribute race. He's always supported the race, so it's fitting.

Exactly - Monaco GP is a nice distance in the future so by that time the mourning ceremonies will be over and life will be returning to normal.

Why is it that everytime someone important dies, people get this incredibly stupid idea that the world should just stop? And how can cancelling events be a way to show respect?????? How about showing some respect for the LIVING instead?

Prince Rainer was in bad health for quite some time, so was the Pope, and surprise surprise they both died. Cancelling events is not going to bring them back, and cancelling events is IMO incredibly shortsighted and disrespectful for the parties taking part of the event. People have planned to go to Monaco ever since the last race was going on and even further back! All the hotels are booked out, airplane tickets have been bought etc. etc.

The show must go on - and the world doesn't stop turning just because someone died. Is it sad to see Rainer go? Sure - but let us not go overboard here. Death is afterall, quite natural.

That is a good point you raise about the Pope. What effect do you think this might have on Imola?

Do you think a) The race SHOULD be cancelled?
or b) the race WILL be cancelled?

Are you for real, if Monaco felt like cancelling the race, Bernie would not have a leg to stand on. They are extermely unlikely to cancel the race but if they decided there really was little if anything rest of the world could or would be willing to do considering Monaco is a sovereign country.

RIP Prince Rainier

to discuss not racing is ridiculous, no champagne on the rostrum as a mark of respect & how about the podium finishers presenting a charitable gift to three deserving charities in the princes memory, that would be a nice sensitive touch, showing respect

Bernie couldn't prevent them from cancelling. But he could sue them for losses of untold millions and breach of contract. And ensure they didn't get a race again.

And I'm pretty certain that the emotional feelings of the Monegasque citizens wouldn't count for anything in the courts of Lausanne (as I assume a legal wrangling would be dealt with there).

You might not be up to date, but RAI had to ask Bernie for permission to transfer their race coverage from Channel 1 to channel 2 last week-end. Should tell you something about what powers Bernie wields.

Prince Ranier was a Grand Prix lover, I doubt he'd want the race to be cancelled for anything.

I am sure they could ensure no future races but Bernie would hardly be in position to sue one penny from the state of Monaco and I sincerely doubt any court in Lausanne has any such legal mandate over the soveirgn state of Monaco.

screw the legal state. Bernie isnt a moron. if Monaco wants the race cancelled im sure they can do it and i dont think Bernie will do anything bout it coz it would look pretty bad suing them in their time of sadness etc etc.
having said that Monaco is the premier race of the year, they wont cancel it. anyone who thinks it should be cancelled is over-reacting anyway.

They continued racing at Imola 94 when they shouldn't of, after Rolands death, even when by law, it should of been investigated more cautiously with implications for the race, the show goes on,formula one is bigger then anyone one man, but we've seen some noble tributes from teams and drivers over the years for sad occasions.

If there is/was a person who would be opposed to cancel it, it would be Prince Rainier, he once said that at least while he lives, no one will stop Monaco. so once he dies, the first thing to do should be maintaining something that was so important for him.

Rainier was one of the carrying forces behind GP of Monaco, worst thing they could do is to cancel the race.

I think they should celebrate the long life of Rainier by making the best damn F1 show ever, that would have made Rainier happy.

Since Monaco is clearly a Michelin circuit and Fisi always excells in Monaco, this is Fisi's best chance to win a race again, that's if Flabbio lets him which I doubt.... Flabbio probably wants Alonso to win all the remaining races

It's absurd to suggest cancelling the race. Especially as a gesture of respect.

Actually, it will be a gesture of respect to have the living cointinue with life and have the race go forward.

Racing teaches us to continue in the face of adversity. Especially the greatest adversity - death, and the threat of death.

Dave

Almost forgot - My regrets at the passing of Prince Rainer. I hope Albert carries on the Grand Prix as Price Rainer would have done.

F1 probably means big money for Monaco, and Monaco surely means big money for F1. The cynic in me thinks that it will go on as long as there is an F1.

And that's how it should be.

Well, part of me would much rather cancel this race and run it on Road America or Watkins Glen; but what the hell.

It's a pity, but it's not enough to cancel the GP. It should be enough for them to pay him some tribute during the race weekend. I'm sure they will come up with something.

And now the Prince has left to meet the King.
