Sarti = von Trips?
Is there any bonus for the correct answer?

American Grand Prix driver Pete Aron (James Garner) is fired by his Jordan-BRM racing team after a crash at Monaco that injures his British teammate, Scott Stoddard (Brian Bedford). The two collide approaching the chicane at Monza – Aron is speared into the harbour (Ascari style) whilst Stoddard leaves some nasty stains all over the rock wall.
During Stoddard's recovery, Aron is signed up by the emerging Japanese Yamura team AND becomes involved with Stoddard’s wife (Jessica Walter) who seems determined to leave Scott. At the same time, drivers Jean-Pierre Sarti (Yves Montand) and Nino Barlini (Antonio Sabato) also have chronicled love affairs with Louise Frederickson (Eva Marie Saint), an American journalist, and Lisa (Françoise Hardy).
Sarti builds an early lead in the championship only to have it whittled away following crashes, mechanical failures and a growing contempt with the whole scene ("Do you ever get tired, Pete? Tired of the driving?"). Stoddard returns to racing doped to eyes on goofballs and manages to win three in a row before the drugs get the better of him. Pat Stoddard decides to return and give the marriage one more go.
Coming to the last race at Monza there is a four way battle for the championship with three time motorcycling champion Barlini leading by a point from Stoddard and Aron and another point from two time champion Sarti. Sarti stalls on the line and by the time he gets going he is well and truly last. Barlini is well in front from Stoddard and Aron. Sarti is storming through the field, for no other reason than to prove himself to team boss Manetta (who had questioned his courage and commitment - "The time for losing comes to every man, of course. I had not expected yours to come so soon."). Whilst on the banking, an engine part dislodges from a slower car in front and fouls the steering of Sarti’s car. Out of control, he flies over the top of the banking at the cross over and fatally crashes onto the road course (not quite like von Trips but close).
Barlini is withdrawn from the race (with a very poignant black flag with the Manetta/Ferrari logo on it) leaving Stoddard and Aron to fight for the championship. On the last lap Stoddard slipstreams past on the run to Parabolica but Aron slipstreams past back down the grandstand straight to win by a nose.
Stoddard and Aron who had obviously been enemies with the whole Monaco, wife stealing thing are reconciled on the podium by the shared grief over the loss of Sarti, who they both regarded if not as a friend then as a respected colleague. Meanwhile, Frederickson has thrown a wobbly that suggests people only watch racing to see blood spilt. The last scene is Aron standing alone on the silent grid, contemplating his future. As the camera zooms back, the engines start up in his mind and you can see him decide that this is what it is all about, regardless of the danger.
As said, the plot’s a bit weak and a little far fetched (see http://www.imdb.com/...t0060472/quotes for some absolute drivel) but it has some extraordinary footage. In 1965 the director followed the F1’s around to most of the tracks and got some awesome in car and aerial footage, including an amazing first lap at Spa where the cars started in bright sunshine only to be confronted by a monsoon on the approach to Burneville. The cinematography was amazing too, with some spectacular split screen work. Amazing that (apart from the accident) the fictional race was almost identical to the real life 1967 race, where Clark had to drive back through the field after being A LAP DOWN to lead the race only before a mechanical failure. Surtees (in a white Japanese car) just beats Brabham (in a green car) to the line – spooky.
The real F1’s of course did not compete on the 10km configuration in 1966 – the speed loop was banned after 1961. The 1966 race was a Ferrari 1-2 with Scarfiotti leading home Parkes with Hulme in third.

BTW, there was indeed a boycott for the 1966 race at Monza, IIRC. What was that all about?

Booso Bengtsson of Plutto Motorsports is steaming full ahead with his ambitions to build a racing empire. Latest reports are suggesting that Team Plutto Racing are close to reach an agreement with race engine manufacturer Jetfire for a long term close joint development program that would include major Plutto resources being pushed into Jetfire. This would give the team an enormous advantage in the coming season. If this deal goes through Team Plutto will be able to write off all of the engine development costs for next season before the end of this season and thus would save financial resources that could be put to better use in other areas.
The team is also looking to secure drivers in good time for the next season. Bosso make no effort to hide this fact: "Yes, it's true that we made offers to several drivers that we find interesting in the coming season. If we could sign a driver at this early stage we could have another valuable input source when we are designing the new car." So far all efforts have been fruitless and the team has not been able to sign any new driver. "All our conditions have not been met and we are now heading for a grey zone when entering the off season and there is no precedent in this matter. We are not that optimistic that we will be able to sign a contract as we had hoped."

The Winton team is set for massive changes next season after a deal was reached with the currently out of work Ferrari Formula One team. Since the demise of the series, Ferrari have been hard at work in Maranello working on concept designs for a possible return to a number of racing series. Many FAWC teams have been in close talks with the team who won 6 straight constructors championships before the series ended yet Winton Primus One have placed the winning bid to use the facilities and staff of the ex-champs.
"Fantastic news, really amazing" said Jase Knut when asked about the 3am phone call from Luca di Montezemolo. "This basically means that Ferrari will take over Winton Primus One Motorsport, yet due to naming rights restrictions, will continue to be known as Winton Primus One. We will of course have to hire the standard FAWC staff and unfortunately Michael Schumacher was not willing to come out of retirement for the new challenge that is faced in turning Winton in to a championship winning team."
Early indications are that Winton will keep the facilities in Phillip Island, Maranello, Fiorano and Mugello running around the clock in a bid to develop a championship winning team.
The announcement comes as rumours regarding Francois Ambert's future continue to haunt the Melbourne based team with the latest being that the team were offered a large sum to buy out their FRR for Ambert. No one was available for comment.

Team Principal: Bjorn Boj “We come to Monza with hopes of making it to the points and to put a good end to the season. I think Alexis will be very competitive in both qualifying and in the race”
Alexis De Sperlet: “I think its time for my bad luck to end now and my goal for the weekend is to stand on the podium after the race”
Eduardo Gellia: “It’s the last race of the season and I would like to thank Penpusharo and Ewing-Plet for giving me the opportunity to race in FAWC. I like Monza and I will try my best to qualify and end the race higher than in the races before”

During practice for the Italian GP at Monza Team Plutto Racing established a new top speed record for Formula Atlas racing cars. In yet to be confirmed radar readings, Nico Deverio managed to obtain a top speed of 373 km/h or 231 mph on the fast Monza straight with a car in full race trim but with almost empty fuel tank. "The car run very well with our updated areo package and this is promising for the race. We have to thank our talented engineers for this great car" said Nico after the record run.

Here we go – last race of the season. In an effort (I’ve been trying for most of the season) to keep this short and sweet, here goes.
Equipe P and Pink Blaze failed to show. Therefore HDR Laramie was recalled and they filled the spots with Hokomish and Campbell.
Qualifying
1 Chester Beatler - 1m 20.926s
2 Reyes Perchinio - 1m 21.431s
3 Raphael Tartamella - 1m 21.961s

5 Earl Hinton - 1m 21.966s
6 Douglas MacPherson - 1m 22.008s
7 Gywnn Costa - 1m 22.085s

21 Mark Buxton - 1m 23.196s
22 Thomas Campbell - 1m 23.291s
23 Eduardo Gellia - 1m 23.328s
24 Nico Deverio - 1m 23.447s
25 John Brewster - 1m 24.643s
26 Stephanie Deighton - 1m 25.098s
The Race
Chester gets away in front but Costa makes a demon start and is in second by the time they approach the chicane. Chester’s a bit tentative on the braking and Costa collects him right in the rear – whack! Costa is out immediately and Chester spins into the gravel. Amazingly no damage to the All Black but he has to wait until the whole field has gone past before he can rejoin. Tartamella is the chief beneficiary but there is a fair bit of mayhem behind.
Lap 1: Raphael Tartamella; David Rhymer; Reyes Perchinio; Earl Hinton; William Filburn; Douglas MacPherson; Jessica Stoddard; Jean Deveraux; Ference Hokomish; Robert Handon.
Lap 4: Stoddard into the pits with a throttle problem.
Lap 10: Konawi out with a puncture. Raphael Tartamella; Douglas MacPherson; Jean Deveraux; Earl Hinton; Reyes Perchinio; William Filburn; David Rhymer; Juan Saez; Robert Handon; Paula Franelli.
Lap 12: MacPherson runs wide at Roggia and loses his front wing and has to pit. It’s too early to turn it into a one stopper.
Lap 15: Hinton out with a loose wheel coming under the banking – he was in 3rd spot. Gellia out with a broken transmission at the exit of Ascari – he was 21st.
Lap 17: Aronsen out with a transmission failure and parks it at the entry to Ascari – he was running 13th.
Lap 19: Deighton out as the Topspec lets go – she was 20th and pulls over at the Variante Rettifilio.
Lap 20: Raphael Tartamella; Jean Deveraux; Juan Saez; Reyes Perchinio; William Filburn; Robert Handon; David Rhymer; Paula Franelli; Tony Patterson; Chester Beatler. Brewster and Campbell already lapped.
Lap 21: Tartamella has been manfully holding back Deveraux for about five laps – the Insomnia j-u-s-t doesn’t have enough to draft by on the straights. Jean finally gets Raffy after a nice double fake into the Rettifilio.
Lap 22: Saez out with an engine failure at the Lesmo’s – he was in 3rd spot.
Lap 23: Pitstops start
Lap 28: Ambert crashes at Roggia. He was in 7th but had still to make a pitstop.
Lap 32: Pit stops finish
Lap 35: Deveraux; Tartamella; Reyes Perchinio; Robert Handon; William Filburn; Douglas MacPherson; David Rhymer; Chester Beatler; Tony Patterson; David Wells
Lap 39: Left rear puncture for Deveraux at Curve Grande (probably the worst place to have it!). The rim collapses and he’s out at Roggia – he had a 20 second lead.
Lap 40: Raphael Tartamella; Robert Handon; Reyes Perchinio; Douglas MacPherson; William Filburn; Chester Beatler; David Rhymer; Tony Patterson; David Wells; Paula Franelli.
Lap 47: Handon comes up to lap Alexis De Sperlet at Curva Grande but slides wide going past on the outside. There’s very little runoff there and the wall takes off the entire left side of the car. He was about 16 seconds behind Raffy so no real chance of a win unless the Maximillian has a mechanical failure.
Lap 49: Hokomish retires the HDR Laramie from 14th as the engine fails.
Lap 50: Raphael Tartamella; Reyes Perchinio; Douglas MacPherson; Chester Beatler; William Filburn; David Wells; David Rhymer; Tony Patterson; Paula Franelli; Jessica Stoddard (a lap down).
Lap 53: The only excitement remaining is can MacPherson chase down Perchinio for second place? Douglas makes a run into Rettifilio but can’t make it stick. Again into Ascari – same thing. Again into Parabolica but pulls out of that one early to stay right on the tail of Reyes. He tries to draft past down the main straight but fails by about half a car length.
That’s it! Tartamella gets the fairytale home win after being denied last year and Maximillian Motorsports does indeed come home with a wet sail. This is just reward for a season of hard work.
Sparx ended being the “Best of the Rest” – a very lucky result seeing as neither car brought home points. Mechanical failures and first corner bad luck robbed All Black Racing as did a rare mechanical failure for Insomnia.
Robert Handon crashes again – five for five and this time he was on for a definite podium. Rhymer was unable to keep the early pace going in order to bring home points. JoyGP had a good weekend – what a pity they had been unable to turn up the previous races as they showed good form.
The Italian home crowd got their monies worth with a home town win and also Franelli coming home in the Top 10. David Wells drove a solid race to pick up the final point. Patterson backed up his win in Belgium with an eight place here.
As for the rest…. Well they probably need to take off all their clothes, go in to the room of mirrors and have a good hard look at themselves. See you all next season

Dexa Racing finally made it into the points again. The first points since David Wells second place at Brazil.
Even being a backmarker is funny here...
Thanks Smithy for all your effort on this championship

I've been very busy lately, so I think that the DB for the FAWC page will take some time, hopefully it will ready for season 3. Sorry

IF there is a season 3, someone might start a thread soonish where we can discuss how this season went, what we want from a further season and how we will achieve it

(Rumouered to be Racing Rumors)
Maxie, the team boss of Maximillian Motorsports, is absolutely delighted for his team winning the season finale at Monza. "Smithy is a good guy. He delivered the promise made when he persuaded me to give up my rickshaw racing team and join the FAWC. Yes, the team started dreadfully slowly at the start of the season, but we always believe in ourselves and most important of all, we must thank the Martians for giving us a crash course on the latest racing technology." Maxie suddenly stopped there, called of the press conference and was later seen escorted away from the paddock by a couple of green creatures, who were heard saying "you shouldn't leak our relationship ..." and things like that.
Meanwhile, Raphael Tartamella is simply speechless after the historic win for the team, and his first win in over a year. "Fisi is a good friend of mine. When he came home third at Monza earlier this year, the first thing he said to me was "win that fxxking race for our people and for Christ's sake." Now I'm so happy that our hard work over the season has finally given us the results we're looking for. Next season we will be even better and will challenge for the championship."

Bidding boss has no balls
Rob Speed confirmed to the press that the team boss who made a $16.5mil bid for the services of Saez for the 3rd FAWC season reneged on the deal or as Rob put it "realised he doesn't have any balls."
