Sorry, if this has been done before, but I couldn't find it in the search.

Anyway, simple question, your favourite Murray pants on fire moments, not just his mistakes.

Mine.

1. "AAHH GOD!!!" Murray screaming with deeper pitch than usual when Schu hit DC at Spa 1998.

2. " SPIIIIIIN!! AYRTON SENNA SPINS!! INTO THE LEAD GOES BERGER AND IN TO SECOND GOES ALBORETO!!! WHAT A FANTASTIC SITUATION!!!" Monza 1988.

MURRAY: "Bernie it's been some 17 years since you bought McLaren. There have been some good times, and some bad times, what do you remember most?

BERNIE(Ecclestone - Owner of Brabbham F1) : "I don't remember buying McLaren"

That was a good one. I also loved his painful expression when DC rammed the pitlane entry wall in 1995.

Don't remember this one first hand, but it is very funny :

Not a Murray moment but a rare Jonathan Palmer moment:

"I don't beliiiieeeeeeve it, he's done it agaiiiin!" Hill running wide at one one of the corners at Suzuka 1995.

Another Murray moment was the end of Suzuka 1994 when Hill beat Schumacher. Screaming "TWO POINT SIX FIVE SECONDS!!!!" Or what ever the gap was on the last lap and then Murray almost wet himself when Alesi and Mansell enter the chicane for the last time.

And then there was Monaco 1982. "Is that Pironi? IT IS!!! MY GOODNESS!!!" Pironi stopping in the tunnel on the last lap.

There are some CLASSICS here.

As an introductory piece for a rallysprint race, Murray was put in the Navigator's seat alongside Tony Pond in a Chevette HSR (270 BHP, rwd, and TWITCHY), added an in-car camera, and wired Murray for sound. The result can be deduced by extrapolating his usual excitement and enthusiasm, and adding a large pinch of raw terror! "And there's a 600 foot drop on my left..AND we're doing 120 mph... AND we're approaching a hairpin...OH MY GOD we're going to die..."

I can't read that quote enough times. :rotfl:

I loved the way Martin's dry humour complemented Murray:

MW: A lot of people here are really debating whether Ricardo Rosset is Formula 1 material.
MB: Well, its a fairly short debate, Murray.

His signature quotes :

"Anything happens in Grand Prix racing and it usually does"
"F1 backwards spells 'IF' "
'Unless I'm very much mistaken...."

but this kind of thing is what he'll be remembered for most fondly :
Brundle : "Murray - remember that Porsche race we watched this-morning : you said watch car 45 and the next lap his rear wheel fell off."

F1 hasn't been the same without him.
I like MB, but haven't really warmed to James Allen, he sounds too commercial, too superficial, even though may not be :

'It's coming, it's coming, you know you want it.'

Oh wait that was that goon James Allen.

To me when Murray left a part of f1 died. It just doesn't have the same atmosphere without the greatest commentator of all time (any sport) and they should really look into replacing Allen. He's an embarrasment and probably puts newbies off with his love of pit stops and his attempt to turn the race into pornography.

So summing up then what's your most memorable moment since listenning to James Allen then ? If you can't see what Murray Walker did for the atmosphere of watching a Grand Prix you sure must have been watching with the sound down.

Murray could be a pain at times, no doubt about it. The first few F1 races I saw were from the ITV feed, and there were several times I kept wishing the noisy bugger (Murray) would shut up once in a while so that I could listen to what the sensible bloke (Martin) was saying.

JAM:rolleyes:S ALL:rolleyes:N's copying of Murray's excited voice is far more irritating -- but that doesn't mean Walker was always bearable :)

Murray will never top "pimp my HANS device".

I miss the old git but the last race something special happened. I will tell you though, if you had to listen to the Speedvision live feed once you'd rather take Murray Walker wathing F1 while trying to ****.

Man you are some miserable buggers. Sure Murray made his mistakes but he knew and loved f1 as much as any of you, the guy had seen every race. Murray > James 'personality vacuum' Allen.

I have a love/hate thing about Murray because I think he brought a lot of people into watching the sport who might never have otherwise been interested. However, his accuracy level when commentating was extraordinarily low, but his excitment was unsurpassed and, more importantly, real. The downside is I think some of the way f1 has become is due to that very effect of being over-excited when sfa is happening. I'd also agree that, while I have learned to enjoy them, he was significantly more fun to watch than the Speed TV Channel Vision Fox commentators. I have no experience of James Allen, but from comments here (some of which I almost consider reliable) I'm thankful of that. :)

My fav, "Unless I'm very much mistaken, ... AND I AM VERY MUCH MISTAKEN!!" mainly because I was watching the coverage when it happened and remember thinking, "that one will live on."

For some reason Murray's mistakes never annoyed me, they were actually part of the enjoyment of watching a race. I found them hilarious. I actually remember Spa 98 when Eddie Irvine spun off and Murray shouted at the top of his voice AND OUT GOES MICHAEL SCHUMACER!!! only to be corrected by Martin Brundle and then go all calm. Also when he had a go a Frentzen for spinning out of Canada and then a few moments later Blundell, who was replacing Brundle cos he was doing Le Mans or something, said it's Villeneuve Murray and then Murray shouts IT'S VILLENEUVE!!!! Funny stuff but with James Allen it's just annoying, maybe cos he's such an overgrown nerd and he tries to hard. Even his face is annoying. I remember Eddie Irvine saying how boring the races were without Murray. Maybe they should give Ed a shot, I think he'd be a great commentator and better than that smug git Martin Brundle. At least Eddie won a race.

NICE MUSIC?!?!?!?!

Zmeej old son, that is the ONLY F1 music there is. That's the Chain by Fleetwood Mac (well part of it), and it was used as the BBC's F1 Theme music for about 20 years. It's a classic.

"Ah! Now here's Senna in the pits (for the black flag). No point in saying I wish I could lip read: I can't even see his lips! There's Ron Dennis bending over at the right. This is A-! Out gets Senna! For whatever reason and I just hope we can get a message about this. I hope we can get a message. Ayrton Senna with, with rage and impotent fury etched in every line of his body, reluctantly drags himself out of the McLaren." (In reality Senna calmly stepped out of the car and walked away.)

Haha. :D

I think this thread sums it up nicely, when asked for a favorite Murray moment everyone has pulled out a mistake or error or a complete line of rubbish that he has uttered, or him describing something that plainly wasn't happening.

Your second line is interesting basically F1 is boring we need a class clown to spice it up...

Murray had his good points, he was extremely enthusiastic and he was an icon to the sport. Funnily though despite posts here saying he was extremely knowledgable, frankly he wasn't, F1 wasn't even his favorite sport, bike racing was. His recollections were hazy at best and I would bet big money most of the stats he produced came from producers or the lap charter they had in the box with them. He was completely exposed on 'Mastermind' last year when he frankly knew less than half the trolls in here.

There is one from the 1997 Australian GP that is good but doesn't often get a run.
Coulthard, Schumacher and Hakkinen are on the podium.

"Three happy young men. and Ron Dennis up there aswell."

to set the stage for you, at the 1989 Australian GP in Adelaide it rained in a big way on Sunday, so much so the track conditions were horrendous. there was much tension and suspense in the minutes leading up to the (delayed) start time, for Prost and Berger had indicated that they wouldn't race in such conditions. even moments before the start it was unclear how many drivers would take the start. the race did start, in chaos, with most of the cars not in their proper grid positions. while the commentators questioned how many drivers would call it a day after one lap, there was little question that the drivers continuing ran in great peril beyond their control.

so, at the end of lap one, Prost pulls into the pits while the rest of the field skates its way delicately along the start straight. high drama, indeed, yet there's no reason to omit the slightest detail--as Murray Walker proved:

". . . Nannini goes through into second place with a long gap, Prost gets out of the car, de Cesaris is third, Martini is fourth, Patrese is fifth, Brundle is sixth, Alesi is in seventh place and he's got bronchitis, and Larini is next followed by JJ Lehto . . ."

One of my favorite moments. Does anybody know on which GP he said this?

Murray: There's a car coming into the pits now! They're so unreliable with all those electronics on board!
James: Actually, Murray, one of his wheels has just fallen off.

Also I love Murray Walker for his ability to mock F1 people without even the intention to do so. In addition to mentioned before:

"And remember: Jacques Villeneuve is a SICK man!" (Referring to Jacques' illness during the race)

Absolutely no sense of humor, I guess. I would pay $50 a race to have him over those morons on Speed.

What made it always perfect was that he was lays paired with an expert, like James Hunt. So, while he would say some crazy emotional stuff (making it a show in the show, fort hose who don't get it), the other would give the information was needed.Besides, if one can read, for the most part tha data on the screen is self-sufficient. Murray's was just the cherry on the cake...if you driver lost, his humorous comments made the defeat a less bitter pill to swallow, if your driver won, it made it all the more happy smiley day

I'm just old enough to remember the days when, apart from the British GP, all the TV coverage you got ws 1/2 hour on Sunday night. Murray Walker made a big contribution to making F1 as popular in the UK as it is now - if it'd been James Allen in those days by now we'd be down to 15 minutes coverage in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

I don't get the James Allen bashing. I watched F1 on ITV with JA for the first time this last GP, (cablecom here in Switzerland have just starting showing ITV as well as BBC), and I thought the commenting was fine. He was certainly better than Murray, who I used to have to put up with when I lived in the UK. I used to really hate Murray due to his embarrasing gaffs. Basically, the guy was too old to commentate.

For the last several years, I have had to put up with German commentary, and trust me, JA is 1 million times better.

My favourite Murray moment was when(to young to of actually seen it live so don't know the full facts) but Mansell had a lump on his head (crash?) and Murray inadvertantly poked it twice while trying to show the audience. It also shows what a legend Murray is as if it had been someone else I'm sure Mansell would have ben really p****d off but as it was Murray he looked a bit annoyed but laughed it off.

Murray was great at cmmentating for his levels of enthusiasm and enjoyment. JA on the other hand trys to imatate Murray bu comes across as cold unenthusiastic and annoying. He should learn to be himself and shut the **** up when Martin is giving some interesting facts, instead he normally interuppts Martin with useless and/or false facts.
