Has anyone heard both CART and F1 for comparison? Please help. How loud? What should we expect cus i hear they are much louder than anything we have heard.

Janda92,
I had the opportunity to hear both types of cars in direct comparison, and i was standing right behind them as they started up. I was at a race weekend at Watkins Glen with the Ferrari owners club, and there were exhibition races going on all day. There were a number of Indy Cars from the early 90's, and there was Jean Alesi's 92 Ferrari. When the Indy Cars were started, they were very loud. But in a later exhibition race in which the Ferrari took part, the engine was soooo unbeleivably loud that everyone in the grandstands, which was about 50 feet back from where i was standing, reacted instantly, covering their ears, not to mention the people in the pit area.
The main thing about a Formula 1 engine that makes it different is its very high pitched shriek. I guess it is because they rev so high, and because they have very short exhaust runners making for a very high pitch, whereas the Indy car has a lower pitched woofy sound, because the turbocharger and its plumbing go a long way in muting the sound. CART cars are loud, but F1 engines positively scream. I would say there was a fairly substantial difference.
Cheers,
Frank

I would say it all depends on where you are on the track.
Last year i sat on Brockies Hill at Melbourne which is a slow corner, And i only heard them breaking coming towards me. This year i wondered round to turn 2 and heard FULL FORCE what a F1 car sounds like on full tilt, peddle to the metal. "It almost hurt". But well worth it. and as i have said before "If there is a bridge crossing the track use it". The sound of a F1 car going underneath you at 200mph is almost,,,,,,,,Well,,, Orgasmic,,,,.
Have great time Janda, and don't forget to wear a bright coloured cap so we can spot you on TV

"it almost hurt" about sums it up.
It punches you in the gut (Like your big banging V8 touring car/NASCAR) while at the same time ratteling your brain like the latest lotto draw, crossed with 1000 female cats with severe PMS, dragging their claws down a blackboard.
its the fact theyre non-turbo that gives them the earpiercing banshee wail.
wasnt too long ago i was up front at a "slipknot" concert. the volume of it all kinda made you feel a bit squirmy. like youd had one too many beers.
F1 is like that....with a bottle of tequila.
PS: was startin to think yad gone walkabout on us pacman!

Nothing prepares you for the SCREEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAMM. It is not all that loud.... well it is but it is more the pitch. The revs are SO HIGH it is the sweetest noise you will ever hear. I have two CD's of just Formula One noises..... it's the main reason I am into the sport... the SREAM is addictive to me.
Top Fuel dragsters are louder and I have to block my ears... F1 i don't but it is an awe inspiring sound.

If you're in the oval section it could possibly be louder than at almost every other track they race at. The oval and all those grandstands is really going to condense the sound. I cant imagine what the sound will be like in the flag station over the start line as the field goes by at the end of the first lap.

Yes ditto some of the other comments here, at full bore, within 20 yards or so it is at Pain level, more than that it well beyond the level at which prolonged exposure can cause serious ear injury. Best to remember your earplugs.
