Mike Gascoyne is performing wonders IMO at Toyota this year, did we have any doubts? Yet Jarno is head and shoulders above his highly rated team mate Ralf! Why?

Considering some Anti-MS rants however, you'd think MS would win this category as well.

Indeed however Michael also scores high on the most over rated contest as well.

And I also agree with JP on Nick. I'd put him on P3 in this list for the time being.

As for answering your question. In the actual driver line-up there are two dark horses for me, whom I account great potential. It's just a feeling not based upon too much analysis though. So I'd pick Karthikeyan, and Massa for this title. Both are quite consistent in their runs, driving close to the limit. Narain has to learn a lot though but I feel the energy and the power in his showings. He is the absolute surprise for me of this season. he's got the talent it's out of question. Massa needs no explanation I think. He has been always underrated thanks to Mr. Sauber, who always reckoned Massa as a crasher wich is a complete bullshit. He's bloody fast, and he is Alesi's favourite too. I was surprised reading this, because I discovered Felipe earlier, and I'm glad that my opinion is similar to Jean's.
And finally I think Heidfeld is a little bit underrated because he doesn't like to be in the limelight, despite he beats every teammate, and he keeps grinding into pulp even Webber - the most overrated driver of the field.

klien improved a lot on last year and should be given a drive asap. massa is also probably better than most might think, kartheykian is already starting to become widely recognised as a genuine talent, i would gather from postings here.
but trulli has been underrated for years, and he still is.

This Italian was underrated for years and years by fans and media. It seems to be some kind of prejudice! He was quick, knew how to work with car, outperformed almost all of his teammates and managed to do a good job even driving bad cars... But no one wanted to notice it! In 2004 and in 2005 he has good car, so all can see his real potential. Jarno's only real problem was that he's very emotional person and has sensitive soul, but now he matured and managed to cope with it.
The second one is Nick Heidfeld.
This fellow is also very quick and understands cars and racing. I'm very happy that now Nick has a chance to show his abilities.

You're wrong I think. Trulli has been very highly rated since '97, (especially after A1-Ring that year; was on course for pole, and led the race for a while) though there have been reservations about his race-craft, and rightly so. He had a habit of dozing off towards the end, but he has improved on that.

I think Nick would be the chap . Even though he is giving Webber a run for his money - nobody seems to talk him up.

I'm not so sure that I'm completely wrong!;)
I'm a old Formula 1 fan and I also noticed the boy in 97 (but even before A1 Ring) and since that time traced his career very carefully. Jarno in his youth wasn't consistent, that's true - too emotional. He has some bad races, yes, but also he did good job and had some very good races, too. But people tended to notice only his bad races and strangely not to notice good ones.

Perhaps not completely wrong, but nevertheless wrong.

I seem to recall F1 Racing talking him up, louding him as Frentzen's obvious successor.

Your choice makes me speechless.

Ralf is under rated?
Fisi is definitely not under rated, he is under the covers... meaning people are not talking about him this season, let him beat FA in a couple of races...
DC is not under rated, people do agree that he is not a WDC contender but he is a very good driver.
Overrated... maybe Webber but pls not Alonso nor Kimi.

Also agree with RJL about Jaquinho, although I'm surprised that nobody has bitten, or rather, snapped back, on that subject.
Judging from the threads about him, there's no way anybody could argue that point because of the many millions who underrate the Canajan Drivin' Champeen on principle.

Yes. RS heavily underrated atm. Fisi too. shame that he had to wait 9 yrs for a top team. Even now he is a no2.
And now Kimi is far the most overrated hype in the F1 world. He didn't have to work with slow cars, easily come in the F1, then in the topteam McLaren without making any miracles. With the McLAren 2002, 2003, late-2004 and 2005 edition, 3 wins (1 of them is a fluke, Spa) aren't that special.

Seems to me that people hereabouts have forgotten about his passes in the rain in Brazil, and his heart-stopping decision to plow through Trulli's (was it Jarno's?) visibility-obliterating cloud of smoke at the top of Eau Rouge.
To put the tin lid on it, youse have also decided to discount the last two races, in which he gave us spectacular and dominating drives.
In the first instance (Imola), his car died, so I guess youse figure that doesn't count. In the second (Spain), I guess youse figure "it was the car" or "he was so far ahead" so that also doesn't count.
By this reckoning, Senna was overrated too...

This thread is about drivers who are "underrated" and not a place to flame about drivers who you believe to be overrated, especially when your choices leave alot to be desired.

And when has JPM or MS worked with the slow cars then ? JPM has never driven a midfield car. Nor MS. They both got the top seats without driving ANY seasons with the midfield teams. (If we exclude MS' debut race). Every cars MS drove, have been race winnin capable ( Alesi won with much worse Ferrari than MS). And what Miracles has JPM showed then so far ?
And how come Spa was a fluke. Kimi started from 10th. Overtook 3 cars. ( including MS) And then he was leading the race 15 secs ahead of MS until safety car destroyed that lead and helped MS big time to catch Kimi.
