I have seen a few teams wasting track testing time because of cold weather or cold tires. If the problem is just on one end of the car, then balance can be altered until the tires warm up. But what if the tires are just plain all cold?

Are there any steps that can be taken to get the tires to warm up quicker? The idea is to make these changes quickly and to keep them just for the beginning of the day, until it warms up. Then switch back to the normal setup and continue the testing without having to restart tuning all the way from the beginning.

There is an excellent article in Racecar Engineering Dec'03 V13,N12 about the art of F1 set-up. Jordan's Dominic Harlow suggested tweaking the front wing, ARB, camber or toe. Claude Rouelle suggested raising roll centers (not a quick change at all). I am leaning towards running some unusual toe or tire pressures, but which way unusual?? Any comments?

Philip

P.S. I may run into these problems myself later this year because all I could find for my AWD track day car a set of four 335x30-18 tires. :D

Adding ballast will heat tyres. The problem is that when you take it away, your set up will need changes.
The same would happen by raising roll centers or tweaking wings, anyway.

Slightly OT, does anybody know details about Ferrari's new tire warmers at the Nurburgring?

I do not subscribe to the Autosport website. Could you please post the text? Thank you.

I like the color! :)

But tire warmers are not allowed in most series. I wonder if they are legal for testing though. It is cheaper (and safer) to buy tire warmers than waste most of the day at the track running laps on cold tires.
