The latest and greatest racing game generally for the PC, imho, is GTR by SimBin, which has moved the quality and reality of racing sims a long way forward. As the name suggests, it is GT rather than F1 oriented, but although I have always been an F1 sim racer, have found myself hooked on this game - not least as it turns out I'm rather more competitive in a GT car than and F1 car!
A new release on the horizon from the same team - which I am very reliably informed is even better than GTR - is GTR Legends .
As for wheel - well, unless you want to wait for a BRD Speed 7 (what year will it be released?), a reasonable inexpensive option is the Logitech Momo Racing. Although I had vowed never to buy Logi wheels again after my old "red" Momo broke far too easily, the newer Momo Racing model seems to be holding up well, - pedals still not broken after over 5 months, and has good, useable FF, a decent grip and (for once!) a good mechanism for attaching to a desk.
I can confirm AMD 3500+ and 6800GT work very nicely with GTR when you have 35+ cars on screen!

Hope that is of some help anyway.

GTR is the big name for PC Sim Racing lately, although it's sportscars. The GTP mod for Nascar Racing 2003 is another great and cheap buy! For F1 racing though I still find F1Challenge 99-02 with Ralph Hummerich's (spelling) updates for 2003 and 2004 to be great additions! By far though, the best add on mod for F1C is the Virtua_LM Prototype C mod. The detail on PTC is phenomenal and with input from Mulsanne Mike, you know you can't go wrong!
Of course all this goes without saying that GPL is a must. The 65 mod is a necessary add on for the granddaddy of sims!
You'll be all set.

To be fare to it, mine did get a mighty whack with my knees everytime I got out from my driving seatOriginally posted by mogwai
I can attest that the Red momo is worth the money. Been driving it for over a year now (6 hours a week I guess) and not a problem.

Had it checked several times, with no improvement. Never found the flaw

Depending on budget, I would go for the new Logitech Driving force Pro, which includes a sequential gear lever as well as paddles, and supports 900 degrees of rotation. It also supports PS2.

But if budget is not the priority, and you really want the 'bees knees' for your new rig, then these guys rock: Ball Racing Development.
But do not click that link if on a restrained budget. And do not ever - under any circumstance - click on the following link to TSW, and when you don't - do not click on the link to product info and scroll down the page.
You have been warned !

Then how about this - a strong case for using 70ies furniture methinks (compare the height to normal desk in the background)...;) BTW, I shift gears with buttons on that joystick- it feels better (even if it isn't as practical) than using paddles in GPL.

downloaded the demo, but it won't run, gives me errors & crahses every time I try to launch it.
I'm a big sportscar GT fan too, actually....old '60's sportscars to the european touring cars, to the GT cup racers etc. plus the races are more forgiving than F1, you can bang around a bit....but more interesting tracks than nascar ;)
thx for all the tips!! looking into the logitech momo...gotta find it in Canada somewhere
cheers
ps I got GP4 installed with the IMG guys' mods, what a great looking game for an F1 sim

Buy GTR and you won't regret it. There have been some problems with online play as well as getting the game to run...but overall the experience for GTR is worth it. The NGT and GT cars are a blast to drive and if you get into a good league, you won't believe the fun you can have.

I am looking around for a more substantial setup, Hypersimulators look okay as well.
If I was to purchase I would look at a chassis, wheel and pedal setup at the same time.
I need more info than just anecdotal blurbs at their webistes.

There are also some really important force feedback tweaks that you can find in this forum for that wheel.
F1 Challenge 99-02 is the pc sim to have. There are some great mods, RH2003, RH2004 which completely enhance the game and bring it up to 99-04
