Hello members,

As promised the list that was compiled with the efforts of Maurizio Tabucchi and Tony Adriaensens, the members of the alfabb.com and myself.

Definition:
But first an addition to definition of what a GTAm is.
As already said the GTAm was an Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV that was converted by Autodelta to GTAm specification. The homologation papers specify what changes could be made.
Along with the type 1750 GTV USA (105.51) some type 1750 GTV EU (105.44) have also been converted.
The same goes for some type 2000 GTV’s.
Besides that, UlrichGTA told me that in Germany some GT 1300 Junior cars have been converted to GTAm because the GT 1300 Junior was lighter.
Difficulty with the GTAm is, that it never had a unique type- and chassisnumber. This is unlike the type GTA (105.32 LHD and 105.34 RHD) and type GTA 1300 Junior (105.59).

Variants:
Then there are variants within the different types:
- new cars from the production line converted to GTAm spec's by Autodelta as Autodelta works cars
- new cars from the production line converted to GTAm spec's by Autodelta as Autodelta customer cars
- existing cars converted to GTAm spec's by Autodelta as Autodelta customer cars
- new or existing cars converted to GTAm spec's by other tuners/teams with Autodelta parts like the Balduzzi cars (Tony Adriaensens mentions this in his book)
- new or existing bodyshells with or without a chassisnumber that were equipped with Autodelta parts (for example from wrecked cars)
- other variants on this theme in various stages of tune

A lot of GTAm's will have been updated during and after their racing life, engines and gearboxes were swapped, they have been restored, etc ..... And some of these cars had great palmares while others were less fortunate.

Copies:
Besides that, there are a lot of copies with various stages of tune with less or more original GTAm parts. Have a look around on alfabb and you will see a lot of GTV's being changed into GTAm copies. Some of them are very nice and well built.

Chassisnumbers:
Here is a list with with chassisnumbers and the sources of the information we have collected sofar.

1. 1530671 Autodelta 01-09-1969 (source: Tabucchi)
2. 1530776 Autodelta 29-10-1969 (source: Tabucchi)

30. 1357933 (source: Martinue)
-. 1530038 (source: Don Best) (typo for 1530938 according to Martinue's 'bad scan', Don Best confirmed it is a typo because he was working from the 'bad' scan)
?. 1530145 (source: Don Best) (typo for 1532345?, according to Martinue) (Don Best will investigate)
?. 1530246 (source: Don Best) (typo for 1532346?, according to Martinue) (Don Best will investigate)
-. 1530787 (source: Don Best) (typo for 1530782 according to Martinue's 'bad scan', Don Best confirmed it is a typo because he was working from the 'bad' scan)
-. 1532165 (source: Don Best) (typo for 1532166 according to Martinue's 'bad scan'), Don Best confirmed it is a typo because he was working from the 'bad' scan)
31. 1530974 (source: Bjorn Schmidt)
32. 1531068 (source: Vince Sharp)
?. 1534912 (source: Ecarrillo, not possible because chassisnumber is too high (?!) Should this read 1354912 and was it a typo? Why was chassis 1534912 mentioned in the auction data? What about the RHD?)
?. 1530537 (source: RossoGTVforme, Autodelta prepared (works car?) No date (Sent to US), seen in Monterey)

So up to now, the sources speak of:
xx. more than 30 GTAm's that could be genuine
?. a couple of chassisnumbers that pose questionmarks
-. some chassisnumbers that could be or proved to be typo's accoording to Martinue's 'good and bad scan'.

Hello Hans,

Thank you for the additions! They have been added in the previous list.
I thought that Hezemans used #105 during the Dutch TC on his personal GTAm?
Do you have a picture or source?

Ciao! Olaf

Toine indeed used the #105 Alfa in the Dutch TC in 1970, the #78 car (the same chassis I presume?) in 1972.

The wellknown Dutch antiskid school owner Rob Slotemaker owned a 2000 GTAm [93-42-MN] which he raced in the 1970 Dutch touringcarchampionship and in the Tuliprally !

Slotemaker used #104 in the Dutch TC and #28 in the ETCC round at Zandvoort:

The same GTAm on the startramp of the 1970 Tulip rally:

Of course the GTAm is my favourite car, actually the whole GTA range is absolutely awsome!

Hello Hans,

You are right, 93-40-MN is indeed the Hezemans car now residing in Amsterdam.
I posted this picture on the alfabb.
I didn't have a source other than the one I mentioned in the thread; my excuses.
I will add your name to it.
That is also the car which also took part in the Tulip Rally.

Ciao, Olaf

The source you mentioned isn't handling my images in a proper way, you don't have to offer excuses to me.

Hallo Olaf,

The MI 91850 GTAm carried startnumber #232 in the 1973 Giro d'Italia.

Thomas Betzler drove a GTAm (entered by Alfa Romeo HΓ€hn from Mannheim) in the 1971 DRM. It carried startnumber #154 and licenseplate NA-TB-555. According to your list in post 51 it should be chassis 1530841, which refers to HΓ€hn.

The MI L27247 GTAm also raced at Jarama (#27 Hezemans).

Regards, Hans

Dear Hans and other members,

I saw the car driven by Thomas Betzler at the Spettacolo Sportivo in Zandvoort in September of 2011.
Chassisnumber is #1530841. The present owner confirms that it was entered by HΓ€hn in Germany.
I posted an update of the chassisnumber list in the chapter `Historical Research`.

Ciao, Olaf

** Edited **

June 2024

Dear Alfa Romeo (1750 GTAm) Aficionado's,

I thought it is time for another update here. This info is sourced from my post #500 in the thread "GTAm chassisnumbers" on alfabb. That post is updated regularly.

This is a long read. I made chapters to cluster specific info about the type 1750 / 2000 GTAm. Chassisnumbers are near the end of post. Recent updates:

  • March 2023.
  • October 2023.
  • November 2023.
  • December 2023.
  • March 2024
  • April 2024
  • May 2024
Chapters:

1. Definition.
2. Variants
3. Options
4. Development
5. Chassisnumbers
6. Sources

This is the most recent chassis number list and explanation.
There is still more info to be added. That's done while reading back information and checking things.
Please feel free to react if you see or miss things.

Please understand that the post contains only part of the known info, there simply isn't enough room to add all data.
As this is an ongoing investigation so to say, further information is supplied in the posts beyond this one and in other threads, for example on specific chassis numbers.

Thank you for all the fellow members that contributed to this thread/database! This list wouldn't be possible without your ongoing contributions.

To understand the what and why of the GTAm, read the rest of this post. Have fun.

1. Definition.

As already said the GTAm was an Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV USA (105.51) that had Spica fuelinjection. Initially it had two brake boosters and standing pedals.
Later the type 105.51 changed to a single brake booster (my understanding of series 2) and to hanging pedals (series 3).
The change to hanging pedals would have been around chassis number #1532000 according to sources.
Here is the reference by KenGTA.

https://www.alfabb.c...61#post-8825761

And in this list, find the present knowledge on standing/hanging pedals situation per chassis number.

https://www.alfabb.c...89#post-8893889

These cars were in period converted by Autodelta to GTAm specification. The homologation papers specify what changes could be made. Autodelta had a complete list of options to convert the car into a GTAm.
A lot of them kept their original colour and were road registered. Under their original 1750 GTV "iniezione" identification and in factory colour. I have seen several vehicle identification papers of genuine 1750 GTAm's that were registered as a 1750 GTV.
That is why there are Autodelta and other GTAm's in red, white, yellow, silver and many other colours.

Along with the type 1750 GTV USA (105.51) some type 1750 GTV EU (105.44) have also been converted (standing and hanging pedals).

Difficulty with the GTAm is, that it never had a unique type- and chassisnumber. This is unlike the type GTA (105.32 LHD and 105.34 RHD) and type GTA 1300 Junior (105.59).

2. Variants.

There are variants within the different types:
  • new cars from the production line converted to GTAm spec's by Autodelta SpA as Autodelta works cars, often in their original factory 1750 GTV colour.
  • new cars from the production line converted to GTAm spec's by Autodelta SpA as Autodelta customer cars
  • existing cars converted to GTAm spec's by Autodelta SpA as Autodelta customer cars
  • new or existing cars converted to GTAm spec's by others such as importers / tuners / racing teams, with parts from a specific tuner or a combination of Autodelta, Angelini, Balduzzi, Facetti and others. Like the Balduzzi (and Facetti cars, Olaf) that Tony Adriaensens mentions this in his 1st edition "Alleggerita" book.
  • new or existing (replacement) bodyshells with or without a chassisnumber that were equipped with Autodelta, Angelini, Balduzzi and other parts (for example from wrecked cars)
  • other variants on this theme in various stages of tune within the rules and specifications of the homologation of the 1750 GTAm.
Edited: All this "in period" (1969 untill and including 1973).

3. Options.

There is a list of Autodelta factory options for your 1750/2000 GTAm called "GTAm modifications & options". Source of this info is the 1st edition of 'Alleggerita' by Tony Adriaensens. These options (and more) are also mentioned in the editions (III and IV) of the "Performance Options Catalog".

In the 2nd edition of 'Alleggerita' by Adriaensens, Dasse & Übelher, you will find a list and photographs of the parts that are specific to the GTAm (als well as to the Giulia Sprint GTA, GTA-SA and GTA 1300 Junior). This 2nd edition is a must for any GTA, GTA 1300 Junior, GTA-SA and 1750/2000 GTAm fan!

The options according to the 1st edition of 'Alleggerita' which are also found in the "Performance Options Catalog" (nr. IV or Rev 2/77):

  • Guillotine throttle assembly for use with Spica or Lucas Mk II
  • Fiberglass or aluminium air box assembly with integral horns & nozzle holders
  • Spica or Lucas (mechanical fuel) injection
  • 10.000 rpm Motorola-Jones rev counter
  • Dinoplex electric ignition

  • 13 inch Campagnolo magnesium wheels (from 7Lx13 to 10Lx13) also 7Lx15 was available
  • Plastic front and rear fender flares to use with 13inch wheels
On special demand:
  • 16 valve, single ignition cylinder testa stretta heads approx. 240 hp with 16V exhaust manifold
  • T64 braking torque differential
I doubt whether this list is fully complete.
What about for example:
  • Special Autodelta works engines upgraded to 84.6 x 88.5 giving 1990cc
And what about for example other tuners such as Angelini with it's 2000cc 16 valve cylinderhead with Weber carburettors.

And what about GTAm parts made by other tuners like Facetti, Balduzzi, Conrero and others?

Further specifications can be found in the homologation papers.

4. Developments.

A lot of GTAm's will have been rebuilt and updated during and after their racing life, engines and gearboxes were swapped, extra weight taken off for example hillclimbing, they have been restored, etc ..... And some of these cars had great palmares while others were less fortunate.

Genuine cars and copies:
Besides that, there are a lot of copies and "tribute" cars with various stages of tune and less or more original GTAm parts. Have a look around on alfabb and you will see a lot of GTV's being changed into GTAm copies. Some of them are very nice and well built.

5. Chassisnumbers.

Here is the list with chassisnumbers and the sources of the information we have collected sofar. This list is an updated and extended version of the earlier lists published in this thread. It considers which chassisnumbers are genuine and which ones are copies or questionmarks.

The chassis number of the car can be found in the engine bay. It sits on the top of the fire wall on the passenger side. It should have a certain fond, spacing and alignment. Amongst other things.
In the forward raingutter of the bagage compartment, near the base of the rear window, the Alfa Romeo type identification was stamped. It should read 105.51 or 105.44 for the exceptions. KenGTA has a seperate thread on that.

Note! Being considered a genuine GTAm in this thread, doesn't mean that the car that is carrying that chassisnumber at this moment in time (2024), is the mentioned GTAm.

Several genuine cars have had their bodyshell replaced at some moment in their life because of crashes, extensive rust damage or for other reasons.

The sources for the list of GTAm's below are:
  • Maurizio Tabucchi (MT) in his book 'Alfa Romeo GTA'
  • Tony Adriaensens in his 1st edition of the book 'Alleggerita'
  • Tony Adriaensens, Patrick Dasse & Martin Übelher (A,D&Ü) in their 2nd edition of the book 'Alleggerita'
  • research by members of this forum
  • my own research.
There is a so called 'bad scan', that was a fax/list of chassisnumbers with errors, that caused misunderstandings concerning the chassisnumbers.
You wil see the typos from this fax/list mentioned amongst the chassisnumbers.

There exists a car with the chassisnumber #1530849. This car has hanging pedals. The most plausible reason for that, is that the bodyshell on this car was swapped. Because of damage during racing for example. Or during restoration. That could explain why the car now has hanging pedals. My opinion.

This car with start number #50 had a fatal crash and was severly damaged at the Spa 24 hours in 1973. The driver Larini died in this crash.
There exists a car with chassis number #1530952. The claim is that the 1973 wreck was restored in 2018. Given the damage in 1973, a resurrection or reconstruction seems a more plausible scenario than a restoration of the wreck. My personal opinion.

This car is representing the Frank Marino GTAm after the Sanair crash. The car doesn't have a chassis number. According to the story, an unnumbered bodyshell replaced the original GTAm shell after the crash.

https://www.alfabb.c...-5#post-8715012
Please remember that this list is not complete, where the history of the individual chassis is concerned. There simpy isn't enough room to add all that is known.
Please note that Adriaensens, Dasse & Übelher ("history mentioned by A, D & Ü") have added a lot of history to the individual chassisnumbers in the 2nd edition of "Alleggerita".
More is to come, because A, D & Ü did not add history that could not be verified. For example #1530840 and #1530841 are two of the chassisnumbers with a lot of info to be added.

Furthermore, Tom Tanner made a list of colours belonging to the different chassisnumbers.

Please feel free to comment on and add information to this list.

That's right, though the presence of the Gerry Lister Volvo in third place would have been at Max's behest...

Of course, there was one race that day where the Volvo was dicing for third with Bob Stevens' blue and white Anglia, while in the other races it didn't feature.

It would have been a tight schedule, the meeting on May 7 then a few days before Jeff Nield's colour slides were available, the negotiations with Rothmans for them to pay for the artwork, the posting of the reference material to Queensland for Col Anderson, who then had to do the painting and send it back to Sydney. But it wasn't over then, either, for there would be a rush to get that to Publicity Press, who would arrange for someone to do the colour separations and then would produce the negatives and printing plates.

So by the deadline, theoretically in time to be on sale on June 1 (and it must have been running close) the 18,000 or so covers would have to come off the sheet press, been allowed to dry and then guillotined and folded to await their turn to go on the assembly line with the two internal sections of the magazine, which were printed on newsprint, stapled, trimmed, bundled and despatched for distribution.

I would have picked up my copy as I went through as I took a deviation on my way home from work the next working day, but about a week later (June 9) I was calling in to tell Max that Justin had come into the world that morning. At that he asked me when we'd be taking the baby home and I told him it would be Sunday (June 11), so he asked me to drop by his place on the way as he wanted to talk to me.

"I'll give Alan Wood the DCM tomorrow then," Max finally said and I started working for him on June 19. By which time the July issue was well in production.

Out of interest Ray, how long did it take Col to do each painting on average? Was he well paid for them?

It was about a week from when we sent away the reference to when the painting arrived in response...

So I guess it took him two to three days, from memory he was paid about $250 in the early seventies and the artwork was sold to the sponsor for about $600. I don't know if Jeff Nield was paid for his reference shots, but he probably was.

Ray asked about the differences between the 1600 GTA and 1750 GTAm.

The short answer is this:
The 1600 GTA (105.32 e.a.) and the GTA 1300 Junior (105.59 e.a.) were competition types made for homologation and racing. With aluminium outer body panels all around, a twin plug engine, light weight driveline, suspension and brake parts, you name it.
The homologation weight of the 1600 GTA was 700 kg's.

The 1750 GTAm was a type 105.51 GTV US street model with Spica fuel injection, that was modified with a list of homologated parts to make it a 1750 GTAm.
The outer body panels were basically steel allthough doorskins, bonnet and boot were available in aluminium and plastic. Skins and whole bonnets and boots.
A 1985cc fuel injected engine based on the 1750 engine was one of the homologated options. Autodelta sold "crate engines" for your GTAm.
The homologation weight of the 1750 GTAm was 960 kg's.

There is a list of options forctge 1750 GTAm in the posts with the chassis numbers.

oh dear Stevo,

Brian Foley Motors were probably still getting their heads around the provisions of the Motor Dealers Act, it only received Royal Assent on May 6, 1974.

Never mind, perhaps the provisions in relation to product description didn't apply to racing cars.
