Anyone who has full results of this South African F1-race?

Paul Hawkins in a John Willment Brabham won, that's all I know.

De Klerk was of course in his Alfa Special, not any Brabham-Climax
Also, those look like the Heat 2 results.
The first three on aggregate were the same, then de Klerk and Tingle (who were given the same time) and Dennis Guscott (Lotus-Climax)

Blokdyk's engine was probably a 119E - certainly not a 105E

Did Hawkins really have a Climax engine in his BT10? i know Willment entered a BT10 with a Lotus-ford engine in some 1964 F1 races, but I've never heard of it having a Climax?

Didn't notice that
No, I'm sure the Hawkins and Prophet Brabhams both ran twincam Lotus-Ford engines
And, while I'm at it, did I mean 109E for the bigger-block pushrod Ford?

The week before, at the South African Grand Prix, Hawkins had a Lotus LF engine, Prophet a Cosworth SCA, Blokdyk a 105E.

According to Cowdrey's "Half Ton Formula", Dawie Gous Porsche was a RSK, not RS.

What kind of race car was Henri Le Roux' Elfin? A sports car?
(Another Henri Le Roux, a French chemist, invented the aspirin!)

And, yes, it would be nice if axlex can show us more about South African races 1965. Had the South Africans an upper limit of 3000cc, a year before the rest of the world?

Maybe not a full year.Did their season follow their summer,as in Aus & NZ rather than the calendar year? The Rand GP in late '65 was certainly to the new formula.

No, I believe it really was all year
John Love was running his 2.7 Cooper from at least March 1965

Just a small correction to the title of this thread. It must read Cape SOUTH Easter Trophy. The name of this meeting comes from the South Easterly wind that is usually blows during the early summer months in Cape Town. Also affectionately known as the "Cape Doctor", since it has the ability to clear the skies of pollution. In the older days it used to cause havoc at Killarney during the summer, when it blew sand onto the circuit, ruining tyres and engines.

Henri le Roux drove an 'Elfin Mallala Ford". See attached picture taken by Dale Gordon. It shows le Roux on the left shortly after the start of the sports car race, which was held at the same meeting. He raced the same car in the Cape South Easter Trophy race.

Bob Olthoff (Willment Cobra) is on the right.

Report of this race mentions that John Love used a 2-litre engine in his Cooper and that he was the first driver to go oversize in keeping with the new 3-litre formula. John set pole during practice when he equalled Jim Clark’s record time, set four years earlier. He romped away from the start, but on lap 4 “Hawkins with 400cc less motor, but a much better car, slipped past Love and took the lead for keeps.”

The 1965 SA Drivers' Championship was held from 9 Jan. 1965 (Cape South Easter Trophy) to 20 Oct. 1965 (Rand Spring Trophy).

If you e-mail me, I'll send the full entry list and heat results. The race was run in the aggregate of 2 heat form that was favoured in SA. This was the first race in the whole universe to the new 3-litre Formula.

Hello Paul

Excellent to see you here on TNF. Actually you're late! We've needed you on many occasions over the last six years.

Hope you enjoy it here and find it a useful research tool.
