The handy little 1967 edition of the SCCA's Road Racing Annual covers the major 1966 events in North America. It lists Bruce McLaren winning two summer races in Canada, not part of the Can Am series that year:
June 4: Mosport's Players' 200, with a McLaren/Olds
July 10: Mont Tremblant's Pepsi-Cola Trophy, with a McLaren/Chevy
In the fall Bruce raced a Chevy-powered McLaren in the Can Am, but did he do so as early as July?

Yes, McLaren did use a Chevrolet engine as early as July. This was covered in contemporary magazine reports and also George Begg’s recent McLaren book. Bruce had finally been convinced in April 1966 that the extra torque and extra 100 bhp of the Chevrolet would more than compensate for the weight penalty over the lightweight Olds engine. By this time Traco could only promise delivery of a 5.4 Chev in May, and the first outing with this unit installed was 10th July at St. Jovite.
