f1rejects may slag Eppie but fans of the sport know, that in the glory days of F5000, he, Mario Andretti, Brian Redman and Jody Schecter provided great racing.

Eppie had the smallest team and took the fight to the big names with spirit and panache.

Considering they've done an interview with him & put his name on a wider scale with a good biography, slagging off is the one thing they haven't done.

Exactly. F1rejects is treating their boys with respect, always referring to their merits as well. They might have been dawgs in F1 but most of them were more successful in racing than most other drivers around. And rejects loves the guys. And it shows

If you can, get the video, 'Red Mist'.. there's a 37-min review of the 1981 Mosport 1000 where Eppie and Redman drove a yellow Lola sports prototype, don't remember model number, but it has a lot of good interviews with him and also great footage of the race at the great track, especially the battle between their Lola and Rolf Stommelen/xx driver's Porsche 935 till the end.

The Lola in question is a T600... it's the car (and the film!) I referred to four or five posts back!

It does seem to be a little known film though (at least in the UK) so worth the extra mention!

For those that haven't seen it, the other film on the same tape centres on the Group 44 IMSA Jaguar - what would that be, the XJR-5? - Tullius and Adams, anyway; I think that was Mosport too.

I'm sorry to hear this. He was a good man, and an accomplished driver. He and my parents were friends; my Dad continued to buy Toyotas from him until he stopped driving.

It always seems odd to Like a death notice, but Thanks Richard for letting us know.

Eppie was a noble addition to F5000 here, perhaps most impressive was making his T400 work when the bigger teams sold theirs off. He only kept it for lack of budget in replacing it with a T332, but made it work with sheer tenacity.

RIP. :-(

Sad news. I saw Eppie race many times at various circuits, and in all sorts of classes, He was quick in all of them and Canadian Champion a couple of times. He drove the Porsche 914, pace car  at the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix.

Nice piece, full of names that used to be familiar but haven't crossed my mind in years.

 

I do wish, though, that avoidable errors like "three-time world champion Jimmy Clark" and "Brian Redmond" were fixed.
