Now that the 2006 Silly Season is almost over -- only three Red Bull seats remaining so nothing exciting expected there -- let's turn our attention to next next season: 2007.

I wonder what's going to happen. Either the biggest musical chairs since 1996 or conservatism on the teams' behalf... or somewhere in between. I think the latter, hence the following list:

You'll want to edit your tyres -- its back to single-tyres for '07.

And MS will still be there ;)

It has long been confirmed that BAT sponsorship ends in Decemer 2006, so you can strike out (no pun inteneded) Lucky Strike.
Rumors has it that it might be Vodafone Honda.....

Now I don't mind a few flights of fancy, but the idea that MFI will still be around in 2007 is pretty far-fetched.

You can get rid of Marlboro and Mild Seven as well... (or in theory, anyway).

On Williams FWE-Plates and on the side of the head protection. The same place it was last season.

The idea of GPMA is not dead yet, and one wonders whether this is just beggining, end, or beggining of the end? Think about it. Is Alonso signing for a year and then on the move one more time in 2008 to stay in F1, or is he moving with MacLaren to another series, should that one take off? From some other sources we heard, that final decisions about life elsewhere are expected any day now, as they all reaching the point of no return.

Boy, does this Alonso-McLaren thing make it difficult to predict, or what? Like Autosport.com says, this move throws the entire market open. Everything depends on which driver leaves McLaren: Räikkönen or Montoya... and to where?

There's three major scenarios, from my point of view, and I'll put them in order of likelyhood:
1. Räikkönen leaves McLaren and joins Ferrari -- this one is widely expected to happen -- and Montoya stays
2. Montoya leaves McLaren (or is forced out) and Räikkönen stays -- this would be '88-'89 all over again
3. Räikkönen leaves McLaren for Toyota -- which would be my preferred option and, I think, the smarter thing to do for the Finn.

In the first case, the list would roughly look like this:
McLaren: Alonso, Montoya
Ferrari: Räikkönen, Massa
Renault: Fisichella, Kovalainen
Toyota: Schumacher (Ralf, there is no other ;-)), Trulli (?)

In the second case, I think:
McLaren: Alonso, Räikkönen
Ferrari: M. Schumacher, Massa
Renault: Fisichella, Kovalainen
Toyota: R. Schumacher, Trulli or Montoya

In the third case:
McLaren: Alonso, Montoya
Ferrari: M. Schumacher (?), Massa
Renault: Fisichella, Kovalainen
Toyota: Räikkönen, R. Schumacher

However, it could be entirely different, still. The Autosport article says only six drivers have a confirmed 2007 race contract: Alonso (McLaren), R. Schumacher (Toyota), Button and Barrichello (Honda), Rosberg (Williams) and Heidfeld (BMW). So... we could yet have an other 1996 at our hands. I wonder...

All this Kimi to Ferrari rumours I think could be something else. What if it's reuniting with Newey at Redbull which has Ferrari engines.

Redbull are serious about their f1 dig, long term, more so then say Renault.

Toyota are serious about f1, they could offer Kimi big bucks, plus neither Ralf or Trulli are the star driver Toyota need to mount a championship in 2007, if indeed they get competitive enough by then.

Ferrari isn't the only choice for Kimi.

Ferrari isn't the only choice for Kimi.

It is if he wants to stay in F1. It is not, if he wants to joint GPMA.

You've got Mark Webber at Toyota. What's the thinking behind that? Are they going to become a home for drivers who disappointed, but weren't bad enough to be out of a job altogether?

If Renault get out Flav goes to Toyo?

that reminds me of when i was playing football in the street with friends as a kid; the ball went flying into the tail of our neighbour's vintage corolla and the TA was knocked off the badge...

MW has got a year to extricate himself from 2005, and don't forget toyota offered him big bucks to move there last year. it's a possibility.

It was an awful gamble for MW to go to team with second-rate un-committed engine supplier like BMW. :|

Hopefully MW can still get to a good team, maybe Williams can be good. But Rosberg could be a risk... yet "F3000 champion" J. Wilson was no trouble it's possible Rosberg may be no trouble.

If MW had gone to Toyota for big bucks, then Trulli would never have gone there and we would have never seen the Toyota-Trulli combination. If MW had gone to Renault, it would have been spectacular because he would refuse to be slower than Alonso without trying really hard.. maybe some spectacular loses and things would of been great to see some fire at Renault instead of consistant reliable Fisico. But never mind, 2006 & indeed again in 07 the order of the teams will be reset, and contracts up for grabs.

I'd Hardly call Trulli a disappointment. Outdrove this years world champ to the point of being kicked from the team. Ralf on the other hand would be a disappointment if I had a reason to care about him.

Anyway I think MW will go to Renault (if they exist still) or Ferrari, unlikely to be Toyota (since he seems to prefer 'private' teams).

OK, let's have a go on the 2007 grid, based on the stories of yesterday and today.

Toyota
1. Kimi Räikkönen (WDC winner in '06 sees more perspective for Toyota than Ferrari)
2. Ralf Schumacher (alledgedly on a five-year contract)

McLaren-Mercedes
3. Juan Pablo Montoya
4. Fernando Alonso

Ferrari
5. Michael Schumacher (no retirement just yet; probably on a one-year contract extension)
6. Felipe Massa

Renault
7. Mark Webber (drafted back into the Briatore fold in Fisichella's seat)
8. Heikki Kovalainen (Briatore says he's "90 percent certain" and who am I to argue with him ;))

Honda
9. Jenson Button (long-term contract)
10. Rubens Barrichello (second of two-year (?) contract)

Williams-Toyota
11. Nico Rosberg (firm contract for '07)
12. Giancarlo Fisichella (final chance in a 'top' car; finally at Williams)

Red Bull-Ferrari
14. David Coulthard (is this his year? :))
15. Vitantonio Liuzzi (graduates from junior team)

Sauber-BMW
16. Nick Heidfeld (long-term contract)
17. Christian Klien (go Swiss-Austro-Saxxon team go!)
(Robert Kubica still test driver)

MF1-Cosworth
18. Tiago Monteiro (or any other driver with rougly nine million dollars to spend)
19. Christijan Albers (announced a two-year contract with Midland, so...)

STR-Cosworth
20. Scott Speed
21. Neel Jani (graduates from test seat into race car)

Aguri-Honda (a Honda junior team, anyone?)
22. Takuma Sato
23. Sakon Yamamoto

Agree with Lustigson except that I thiink Schumi will retire, Raikkonen in at Ferrari and Trulli stays at Toyota.
