I am interested in how they mounted the turbos to prevent exhaust manifold cracking in the F1 turbo days, has anyone any photos to either direct me to, or e-mail me, showing the mounting systems various manufacturers employed, please? I believe they often hung them on a "crane" affair, using rod ends, to take the weight off the manifolds and allow expansion and contraction? Cheers.

Excellent pictures. With such large turbos and the amount of vibration that an F1 car experiences, they required some kind of external mounting frame.

I believe that throttle plate in front of the turbo compressor inlet was used to cut off the air entering the turbo in between shifts to keep the turbo spooled up. Does anyone know what that compressor housing-looking thing is in the first picture, near the bottom of the block just behind the clutch?

Doubt they'd have used an external mounting frame, the expansion would have made it more hassle than it was worth, once flexibility to allow it had been factored in.
