Thanks Ibsenop for the Mazda Cosmo in particular.

And all the Japanese cars reminded me.

Anyone ever seen a cutaway of the original Honda S600?

Just an observation but I think it's a real shame that most older posts in this thread have been rendered virtually useless by the requirement to link to an external image-hosting site. I know it is a lot to ask but could contributors perhaps list the original source when they post cutaways (eg name of publication, date, page number) as then at least it would be possible to refer back to the original publication and view it? If anyone feels like retrospectively revisiting the index or individual cutaways they've posted and doing this, that would of course be most welcome and I think would add considerable value to the earlier posts on what is a 322 page thread now. I'm looking for cutaways of the Lotus 16, Lotus 18, Lotus 24 and Lotus 25 to show at a talk I'm giving, if anyone has any quick pointers!

Hello Michael, hope all is well with you.

There are James Allington cutaways of 21, 24, 25 and 33 in Hugh Haskell's "Colin Chapman, Lotus Engineering" (p97-9).
They are small-ish, each about 7 inches long, but well reproduced and (as you would expect) very detailed.

If I can think of any others, I'll get back to you.

Hi Tony

Yes, thanks, all good, thanks for this. Unfortunately, that is one book that I don't have! Seems I will have to find a copy...

Thanks

Michael

Just so you know, it's not based on a real car, just an artist's rendition.

I found a way to translate the article.
I saved the files, copied them to my phone and got them translated through google lens. And the translation is really bumpy!

10kDA,

I believe the Formula Super Vee rules mandated standard VW brakes and transaxle, hence the rear drums and "inverted Hewland". I think the rules were later relaxed, enabling fitting standard VW 1600 front discs (or at least the calipers) at the rear also. I also seem to remember that many of the later air-cooled Super Vees retained the 'right-side-up' VW transaxle housing, but with dog-ring Hewland Mk.8/9 internals.

Others are probably more knowledgeable on Super Vee than I am.

...Sometimes when I looking at some interesting black-n-white cross-section, I'm trying to improve readability by adding some halftones - like this RA168 drawing... Honda-RA168-E-Readability.jpg ...and probably the most ambitious of such modification attempts was this FO110E cutaway by Michael Stirm posted here about 10 years ago - rare and beautiful engine, but as an illustration somewhat messy and hard to understand... The idea was to try to make it look more like this 049 engine cutaway by Mr. Matthews - Type-049-Engine.jpg ...so I made quick thumbnail-size prototype (this is actual size) - proof of feasibility or something - Mercedes-FO110-E-Readability.jpg and then started full-size recolor - but a lot of things happened and I kinda lost confidence... Here is where I stopped (only cuts made white, essentially) - maybe someone wants to finish this recoloring? Naturally you don't have to follow my thumbnail - maybe you have your own ideas about which kind of shading is the best when doing engine cutaway Mercedes-FO110-E-WIP.jpg

Thanks, but it looked OK only on this tiny thumbnail - at this size (where you can't really see any small detail) almost every early black-n-white or grayscale cutaway drawing can benefit from such mod... But when trying to scale up, level of difficulty is skyrocketing - you need cleaned lineart on separated layer, you need to create some kind of mask for every area - and probably what is most important you need technical information about engine to restore or correctly interprete particular lines (by the way, this FO110E is about the only cutaway with axial plunger pump for pneumatic valvetrain - if I'm not mistaken later everyone adopted pressure bottle as a less power-robbing solution)... So I'd say you have to be REAL artist to make this full-size and full-detail - at least it was impossible for me to finish this ;-(((
