"Mr. Beard explains....."
...and the gentleman in the white shirt that he is explaining to is none other than Joaquin Folch!

Thanks Barry!. I wish I could remember what I was saying. :
The other chap now looks after this Lotus 16: it's Urban Fassler.

I am not a 16 man, but have a few older pictures. Can any of you tell me what the three
pipes are which come out - and - go back into the lower part of the car - at right angles - are for?
On an older picture (very poor scan) I can see only one, and as it is front engined and front cooled I am at a loss.

Early (58) 16s had the oil pipes inside the bodywork. The modified 58 car at Donington has two pipes, which must be one going into the pump and one return (scavange). I think on the three pipe layout there are two scavange pipes. I've never seen a 16 with one oil pipe...can you post your photo, Macoran?

Would anyone have a period magazine article (Autocar/ Motor) with a cutaway so I can study the
16 layout ?
Yes, that's 363, the Donington car: the only one with Vanwall style holes behind the driver.
I have a few magazine cutaways, but they are all of the 58 cars with pipes inside the bodywork.
There was a really nice Lotus 16 cutaway in the Eagle comic. I've tried to buy one 3 times on Ebay and always been outbid.

I'd still be interested if the pipes are inboard.
Can I pm my e-mail to you for a scan ?

You know what....I saw this very car in the Le Mans pits last year for the leg of the "GP Masters"....and I was so surprised about how this car looked small, light, fragile....."dangerous" in a way, compared to the current single seaters.....the visual shock, plus knowing that they are made of thin alloy sheets and not carbon fibre "survival cells".....all of a sudden, I felt a lot of respect for Mrs Lyons ( who drove this car ) and her colleagues in historic racing , who, despite the rather "quiet" pace at which they drive those cars, still take many more risks doing so that the Alonso's and Schumacher's of today....

Thankfully, there are also some historic F1 competitors who are able to show the cars off at something close to their original pace. Duncan Dayton and Danny Baker had a great race at Pau on Sunday, which rather destroyed the popular notion (in Europe) that historic racers from the USA are more interested in polish than performance!

Thank you very much for the Surtees photos !
They are excellent !
I can not understand why the car is painted red, as the Brooke Bond Oxo cars were blue.
As far as I can remember, only the "Flame Out" (or something like that ) sponsored car, driven by Tim Schenken, was red.

How reassuring to see that Classic & Sportscar have featured Antoine's brilliant photograph above, in the new issue of the mag.
Congratulations, Antoine, a super shot.

Off to Barnes & Nobles to see if they already have the new C&SC issue
There is a German classic car magazine (Auto Markt??) with more pictures of the incident, taken from a different angle.
Special thanks to Stuart Forrest and Mick Walsh for contacting me
