Just looking through a few photos & got to wondering where Tom got his crash helmet design from. Anyone know??

From what I heard his dad put some lines on the front of his helmet before his first race to be able to ID his son on the track. I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is what the deal is.

I think that's right, we've debated this in a previous thread. Nothing to do with rowing clubs or anything else, merely an ID tool.
Not a very romantic explanation...sorry.

That's what Tom's dad said. Tom was never very, "flashy", and a plain white helmet was more than enough. It was while trying to time him someone said, "if you spot his helmet, you'll be ready" and hence the black vertical lines. I think this is in DJT's Racers Apart. You could have phoned!!!!

Did he have a peak originally? And the stripes were on the peak, a la Jackie Oliver?

Only on his early open-face, IIRC, upon which the stripes were originally applied...
