Ashamed to admit I have been watching the usual slightly OTT opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. Was a little surprised to see the 2 hours or so entertainment culminating in Luca Badoer driving a Ferrari (albeit in red with Olympic livery - but the steering wheel sported a prancing horse) part way round the stadium, and then doing a few doughnuts.

Interesting that Ferrari appears to be a brand that transcends sports and is seen, presumably, as some kind of sporting pinnacle.

I wonder if McLaren or Williams will be asked to do the same at the 2012 London summer Olympics?

I would think that Mclaren is then Mercedes and Williams probably some other manufacturer also...

Been watching this as well.

The Ferrari got the biggest cheers of the evening thus far, when that engine fired up

So, F2003-GA then ?

Yes, was surprised to see them run it, thought it was just "there" to be admired.

(And regarding the other point, was being a little sarcastic, I would think the chances of McLaren or Williams at 2012 intro is somewhere between 0 and zero :) )

I just saw the ferrari appear on screen and went WOW! didnt expect them to fire up, when they did, that was just a sweet moment, some V10 music after the tek trance and classical :)

The olympic opening ceremony is just finished. One item in the programme was a red F1 car doing pretty spectacular donuts on the infield... I liked it! Presumably he tried to do the olympic rings.

It was Luca Badoer in an all Red Ferrari with white Olympic rings. But he was hardly tring to make Olympic ring donuts

The danish commentators said it indeed was a Ferrari and it was driven by Badoer.
Presumably they wanted to have Rossi drive the car since he is very popular and represents "the best of Italy", but somehow that was not possible so Badoer was used.

Very cool, and a great opening ceremony

Does this Ferrari display take place at the very end ???
I'm getting bored watching this crap.... "OTT" just doesn't do this justice...

It doesn't matter if the rings were successful or not. A very big  to the organisers and Ferrari for including this in the show.

Since it's from swedish television, it may be blocked for "foreigners". IOC could teach Bernie a lesson when it comes to enforcing broadcasting rights.

Oh, was sposed to be the rings - lol, just thought it was a few random doughnuts - which is kind of how it turned out.

Never mind, the attempt at a dove at the end was very lop-sided and manky looking, and reminded me of a normal ****ed-up London pigeon...maybe there's something they COULD use for 2012! :)

One thing that was good - apart from the Ferrari of course, was the huge ski-jumper, comprising I guess 200-300 people, which was very effective.

The rest was usual OTT excess, with "and this white ball represents world peace", and "this child represents the future hope of generations", and "this dog-turd represents man's need to distribute harmony, love and the very joy of existance to the far corners of the Universe" type nonsense.

At least the Olympics themselves will provide a means of killing time until Bahrain.

Women's cross-country curling anybody?...

Does anyone know approximately how long into the ceremonies that the Ferrari makes its entrance? The opening ceremonies are on TV in Canada in 20 minutes and I don't want to watch the whole thing

Now that Ferrari livery is a fine antidote to the garish monstrosity revealed by McLaren today.

I bet you're right, and figured that could be it. I ended up watching the video on another site, but thanks anyway. :)

I'd put a link but I don't want to kill someone else's bandwidth.

I didn't see the beginning but the Ferrari came in the last 30 minutes for sure so I would say 2.5 hours in and you should see it. 2 hours to be safe. Ferrari is after the Olympic flag is brought in.

The Canadian version is only 1 1/2 hours long, so perhaps the Ferrari has been 'censored' to protect our tender sensibilities.

I'm currently watching the introduction of the Olympic teams, from all the different countries, (currently Nepal).

Should I keep watching ????

I guess some repeats are shortened. The Newsworld repeat was shortened this afternoon but the main CBC network has booked 3 hours for a repeat at 10:30 pm. The CBC main network repeat has started right now at 7pm local time and it runs 2 hours. It's all a bit confusing.
At noon or 12:30 CST the show was live and I watched it until around 3pm before the Ferrari was on.

Keep Watching!
It's after the parade of nations, and the Italian Renaissance -> Baroque -> Present, demonstration.
I tried to record it on my HD but screwed up somehow.

Well, it should not be a surprise that a Ferrari was shown.

Torino is the city of FIAT. In the past the whole city move around FIAT. Now the whole city suffers around FIAT. Furthermore the olympic games are done in the Bardonecchia area where the Agnelli family has a some of the sky resorts.

So it's clear that the Agnelli family and FIAT try to show the best they have, and that's Ferrari.

BTW, Torino is a nice and unknown city to visit (after the olympics).

Got late and only seen Pavarotti... can' believe I missed that.

Maybe Autosport would put video clip on its page  just for as long as Olimpics go..

Big    for the organizers of the show for putting the icon of our beloved sport for such TV audience.

Hmm, if they had wanted to create the olympic rings they should really have gone for Rossi or Biaggi on a bike.

Doing the circles would be a lot easier to do with a bike burnout I'd imagine.
