The Camel - F1 in London pub
#1
Posted 05 March 2006 - 00:20
Following Bumper's instigation of something that should become tradition last year I'm hoping to drum up more interest this year. (I must admit that I did not attend last year, but am very keen to this season, living just down the road).
For those not in the know, its an Australian pub that is one of the few to consistently show F1 races. It can be found at:
Address: corner Wilton Road/Gillingham Street, SW1V 1HP. Tube: Victoria station, serviced by Victoria and District/Circle lines. Directions: take Wilton Road exit, turn right going up Wilton Road, after about 150 yards you'll see the pub on the right hand side.
Map: http://www.streetmap...=178823&A=Y&Z=1
I've never actually been there I must say, so can an old attendee or Bumper himself can confirm that this will be taking place again this year (I'll go myself and ask as soon as I have a minute post and edit this, but until then...)
It would be good to here in the upcoming week if you'd like to do it, and from those there last year.
Best,
lcn

From the old thread:
http://forums.autosp...y=&pagenumber=7
Us three were consistent regulars, be nice to have you as consistent regular, as once no one showed up, except three of us, Bumper, me and Radz, the low turn out record, we can't have a repeat of that.
Common regulars last year:
Bumper
Me, Sean
Radz-
Al-missed a few, but he intended most
The Atlas part time crew:
Cathexist-on and off he was, more of a atlas reader then poster
Jon Pollock-on and off
Ross Stonefeld-came to one
Jackman: Another special guest appearance from a atlas legend, he's a legendary boozer, James Bond journalist, travels the world, we'll be lucky to get him to come again

We got some more as well who attended, but there atlas readers, not posters, hopefully they'll see this thread, and come back knocking.
There's another atlas London forumer I know here, doesn't post much, but I'll be trying to get them in.
Special guest appearances last year at the Camel
Philhitchelings
Sith
Always can get some forumer flying in from another place.

I'm very unreliable it must be said. But by being the thread starter I've kind of commited myself now, haven't I? I guess you could see le chat noir disappear and il gatto nero begin posting but that would be a new low!!
I think those that are Middlesex based should make the effort too. You know who you are.

Well, behrain, sepang, albert park, too early times for a meet I think, we'll have to start with the Euro season, IMOLA, unless there's other suggestions, ideas, interests from people.

No, no, no, no, no.
The pub'll be open won't it? What time is the race? 11am, 12?
It just allows for more (drinking) time to mull over the coming season. Would you rather be typing away here or sat with the same people, beer in hand?
And at what point will the action be ripest for drunken conjecture?
You know it makes sense!

Just remember you live down the road, I'm coming from East London, I won't be on atlas typing, but to wake up like 9:00am in the morning, get ready, get on a train on a sunday, it's over a hour a bit in the morning up there, go to the pub, it's long a haul for some, and I'll be late, I mean I don't wake up 9am on sundays, it's been a long time, I'm looking forward to sleeping and waking up, and going downstairs, to watch it on tv, I love a drink, but 10:30 in the morning, when coverage starts, much of a hassle, and right now, I'm job hunting, so I couldn't fork out the beer price right now, and travel cards have gone up in price, London is freakin expensive right now for me, all in all, I don't live down the road like you..
We never did do pub meets this early in the season last year, I very much doubt we'll get people for this early in the morning. I like to stay in and relax and watch the first 3 gps, there's plenty of pub meets coming up, it's like fine wine, we'll open up it up later.

I'll be available from Imola onwards. If I lived where you was, I'll be there, no hassle.

Well, essentially, the Aussie pubs:Originally posted by kamix
Could you guys explain the difference between an Aussie pub and a British one?![]()
(a) Serve Crown Lager
(b) Have lots of TV screens
© Show the Grand Prix races.
Typically, British pubs:
(a) Serve Fosters or Bitter
(b) Usually have one small TV somewhere
© Show the cricket.
Now, I'm generalising a bit, but in short The Elusive Camel at Victoria is a great place. On top of everything else, they do FANTASTIC Sunday lunches, so there's food, beer and GP racing. What more could a fan want? (Apart from a better season from Ferrari?

As Sean says, last season was one of high promised attendance, but with low actual turn-outs. Let's see if we can't turn that around, eh?
And Le Chat Noir - if you really do live that close, then no excuses! Be great to get another 'regular' involved.
Now, where's Bumper?

Confirm Bahrain, given the tight number of people who could show up, we need a yes or no, are you IN, or OUT.
To quote Robert Deniro from HEAT, I need a driver "YES OR NO? RIGHT NOW."

If there was at least 4 sure members of atlas at Camel this Sunday, I'll make the effort to wake up early and get myself down there. But things happen at the last moment, could lose a sure member, so ideally need 6 people for sure, then if one drops out, it isn't too bad, so 6 is the number I say.
Le Chat Noir-seems a regular alll year now
Radz-waiting on others like me I think for turn out
Bumper-dunno yet
cathexist-50/50, which reminds me of the low turn outs of last year, we need loyality, you got enough money now cathexist from your current job? quit and relax, your young, drink more beer, take a year off , it could be MS's last year, live it up!!! Forget the pension, you wanna live forever. I'll buy you OMEGA watch when I win the lottery, MS ambassador class.

Yes, I've arranged with The Camel that there will again be Camel F1 meetings this year (bar the early morning ones), hopefully we'll be able to greet a lot of new people.
The Bahrain race starts at 11.30am UK time with ITV coverage from 10.30. The pub opens at 11 am on Sundays so for the first race, as it will be on so early, I'm reserving the little seating area at the back rather than the big room.
Hope to see a lot of fans turning up this year, we've always had a great atmosphere going and we don't care what your allegiance is as long as we can take the piss out of everyone

Hope to see everyone on Sunday!

Thought it an idea to have the thread over the weekend - better to drum up interest. Not an intention to steal any kudos tho, and it helps motivate me to walk the 400yds I was too lazy for last year.
Good to know you've sorted arrangements. Would be good if it was Wi-fi'd so we could get sector times, and does anyone bring a radio to cover the adbreaks or remove the nauseating tones of JA?
So the little area at the back, that sounds easy to find. Tell me, do you spot AABB members when they enter - can you tell them from the crowd? Please say we blend in!!!

Looks like it's game on for Camel then, I hope to be there on Sunday, even though I need to walk more then 400 yards, by help of trains and more walking to stations and underground stations, le chat noir, you don't even have to buy a travel card, I have some major beef with you regarding you non attendence last year, then acting all authority like for your redemption this year, pushing me to come from the other part of London, when you live 400 yards away, you lucky bugger, you better attend all of them or else!

But he may see my post, and treat it as a challenge to prove me wrong.
The fact that Jackman has posted here, may mean a surprise special guest appearance from him, because he travels the world like Bond, it's always good to go back to headquarters, London is your home, and we'll have supper on the pub table ready for you.
Why do the amercians call it supper anyway, I know it's dinner in UK, Jackman's supper time.

For the first time I can actually type
lmao
and mean it.
I've never used the phrase before.
I'm gonna be a major dissapointment after all this!!
Anyway, just so we're clear can we all post in here 'IN' or 'OUT' say at least 24 hours previous. I do intend to come, of course, and it seems that Sean has now resolved to come, so its all good, but you know, just in case....
Of course, the other way is just to post out if you renege.

Perhaps you nominate a driver and for every postion lost or gained a drink must be drunk.
Or perhaps every time JA makes a nauseating comment a drink must be drunk. (Do we get commentary?)
Everytime STR is mistaken for RBR and viceversa (how would Murray have coped?!)
You get the drill. Think summat up.

The Camel has just contacted me with the following. There's good and bad news:
Bad news
- The Camel pub is under new management as per immediate effect.
- Opening times on Sundays now from 12.00 midday instead of 11.00 am.
- The function room is now only bookable for a guaranteed minimum of 20 people with deposit.
Good news
- We are booked in for all races (except early morning ones) for the little seating area at the back.
- If there's no function going on we are still welcome to use the function room, just not exclusively.
- The 20% Crown lager and food discount I arranged with old management last year still stands! (only for our existing Camel card holders)
The new manager is a spotty 20 year old kid in My First Suit attire, but my partner in crime Nicola who works there will make sure we still have a good time.
As the pub now opens at 12.00 midday on Sundays and the Bahrain race starts at 11.30, the Bahrain pub meeting will now not happen.
So we'll see you guys at lunchtime on Sunday 23 April, Imola GP for our first Camel meeting of the year

Well I originally intended to start my season at Imola, was in two minds for Behrain, but I would of come.
I think the season will come on full force from albert park, Imola anyway, when it really gets interesting, so we'll have a strong start at the camel.
Good news about being booked for the all races, long term thinking, this is f1, no quick overnight solutions, you saw the opportunity, and took it!

Ah well. Them's the breaks sometimes. I'd invite you all to mine again, but:
(a) It's a long way for most of you,
(b) Due to a water leak, I have no carpets or bathroom floor at the moment

As for the 20 people with deposit yada yada yada, I know last year we had the 'F1 Only' sign up, but once the race started we often had other people sat in the function room area. Hopefully, not too many events will get booked in on a Sunday lunchtime during the season, so it shouldn't actually be that different.
And we'll sort out Captain "My First Suit". Maybe we'll introduce him to the finger-chopping chef from last year...

Sadly I won't be able to make the Imola weekend, as I'm actually running the London Marathon on April 23rd

It's all for charity, so if any of you guys want to sponsor me, there's a web page here...;)
And as we finish near to Victoria, if somebody could come to help peel me off the floor afterwards, that'd be great too...
Have a great Bahrain, everyone!

The world is better place with ferrari fans like Radz are doing Charity, perhaps part of that good deed rubs off with the maranello outfit at Imola, and your both winners on that day.
Hey if they win, I'll be partying for 2 weeks until the next gp. Apart from 2001, they've had strong outings this century there, even last year.
It must be weird running on that day, as the gp might cross your mind, what has happened, who won etc

I'll look out for some pubs, and keep your eye on this thread, since Jackman isn't coming to the Euro races, we owe him a bigger effort to get something arranged.

I realise how much of a pain it is organising these sorts of things, but I dunno, I'd rather watch Ferrari triumph or fail in the company of people who give a toss about F1 rather than my snoring golf playing flatmates ;)

I've only just noticed the thread getting active again. Been busy on that other one, which now I'll have to wait a week before I explain it.
Anyway, hampstead sounds maybe a bit far. I have two parties to go to, one on friday, one on saturday, with a pub crawl in between. Was hoping to crawl down the road to have a breakfast of champions with you all.
I won't say no to this new meet just yet, I'll confirm on Friday night, post party (unless its a really good party ;))
I will confirm to Imola though, so long as I'm in the country and not working.

Lontano, the Malyasian GP is on here really early in the morning, about 7am, so the Camel will not be open at that time unfortunately. ITV always cover the race live though, if not on ITV1 then on one of their sister channels.
