A remarkable figure in rallying- Colin Grewer- universally known as 'Mad Dan'. He died in the last couple of months but I heard yesterday. He was a formidably quick driver in ralying and rallycross- I first encountered him at the High Eggborough rallycross in W Yorkshire in about 1969, He was driving a Mk 1 Cortina with Volvo power - sponsored by K cars of York- which I think was his firm (?) and was certainly a Volvo dealer. He won a lot and was always heroically sideways-but on one RAC he ran (if memory serves) in top ten.

Sad day for open wheel racing fans in the USA, Jason Leffler died in Winged Sprint Car race last night in New Jersey. He left a 5 year old son, Charlie Dean. I was a big fan of his, he will be missed by many because of his unique style on and off the track.

A very sad occurrence. He was it seems one of the few all round American oval racers. Dirt, Indycars, Nascar.
A sprintcar it seems can still kill. Having been used to them crashing spectacularly often as they do and the drivers limp away.

Although some might feel this entry is more appropriate to the "Driven to Crime" thread, I have just learnt that Mike Tyrell (b.1946) died 30 May 2013, in University Hospital of North Durham, UK (from Frankland High Security Prison where he was serving a 26 year sentence for cocaine smuggling).
Whatever his later involvement in something rather more serious than his earlier running of ganja between the Leeward Islands in his 90 mph powerboat, being a country's (however small a country's) most outstanding driver will certainly not be forgotten by his local fan club (where he remains the self-styled "white rasta" and a "folk hero" to those in Antigua of all races who perhaps do not fully appreciate the full seriousness of his subsequent history elsewhere). 3 consecutive F3 poles in 74 (in the ex-Tony Brise March) is also something not many can equal.
This leaves a bit of a potential vacuum for the Ensign LNF3 chassis historians, since the hoped for interview cannot now happen.
It is said his death was being investigated by the authorities.

Prominent Ukrainian rallying driver Vadym Nesterchuk died of dehydration in the desert in Abu Dhabi after his vehicle broke down during a training session for the Silk Way 2013 rally, officials said Tuesday.

Nesterchuk, 42, was found dead earlier this week in the Liwa Oasis in the emirate, it said.

After a technical malfunction of the car, the driver tried to walk to the nearest village. A rescue team that located him using GPS coordinates found him unconscious.

According to the embassy of Ukraine in the United Arab Emirates, the preliminary cause of Nesterchuk's death was dehydration. Police are investigating the circumstances of the death, the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.

Nesterchuk, a leader of Ukrainian rally team "Sixt Ukraine", had participated in major rallies like the Dakar Rally and the Silk Way.

The 2013 Silk Way which starts in July will take competitors from Moscow to the city of Astrakhan close to the Caspian Sea.

Bob Kongelbak, April 22, 1934 (San Francisco) - January 24, 2013 (Auburn, Washington). Raced Corvette in 1958 and 1959.

Jim Hughbanks, April 9, 1932 (Seattle) - March 2, 2013 (Seattle). Bought his 1957 Corvette new from Nelson Chevrolet in Ballard. Raced it in 1959. Also had the ex-Pete Lovely Pooper and converted it to Formula Junior.

It is with great sadness I pass on the news that Robin Bryant passed away on Sunday 23rd June.
at Glenfield Hospital following a dual coronary artery bypass grafting and aortic valve replacement
Sadly he did not recover from the procedure.

The funeral will take place at Boston Crematorium in Lincolnshire on
Thursday 11th July at 1PM.

Robin had a proud history in Motor Racing racing following his good friend Bruce McLaren into the sport.
From his early Lotus , to 1959 outings with his Austin A35 , then with great success in 1960 in the Team Barwell Turner with which he won the 1960 Autosport Championship
Up to 1000cc class and , then drove for Jack Brabham in the Works Sunbeam cars that went to Sebring in 1961

Robin is held with in great esteem by us Turner enthusiasts , and was overjoyed to see the Michael Turner painting of his beloved Turner RB 247 adorn the Turner book and Turner Calendar covers , He was flattered that people remembered and had an Interest in his racing all these years later and certainly became a great friend to the club , attending Turner Rallies ,
Silverstone Classic and Prescott to support the events and share his fond recollections of the cars.

His wonderful recollections and great sense of humour will be greatly

missed.

Agreed Manfred, I grew up watching Chuck race in Formula B cars in SCCA. He was always fast even in his later years, racing an ex-Bill O'Connor Brabham BT38 for what seemed like forever.

He was quite a venerable driver and was the longest SCCA license holder for at least a decade.

I also saw him race several times and had a memorable race against him in Oct. 66 at Mid-Ohio - both in D sedan minis. I set fast time but he prevailed by one car length at the end.
Berndt Leckow was between us in his NSU 1000.

Squadron Leader F.A.O. [Tony] Gaze, OAM, DFC and 2Bars.

Tony Gaze passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday morning the 29th July, 2013 in Geelong, Victoria. He was 93 years old.

He had kept good health and happiness in the past 51 weeks since Mum’s death last August, and had stayed in his beautiful home in Barwon Heads up until the past ten days.

So many thanks go to his wonderful carers Susie Burston, Lisa Binder, Jane Wells, Annie Bowen and Melissa Rae, plus the ongoing support of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

We will hold private family funeral service for him this week. This will be followed by the memorial service in the coming weeks to celebrate his incredible life, where we invite his many friends and admirers to join us at that time. I will send details of this service within a few days, when arrangements have been completed.

Tony was a highly admired and respected man, and a real life legend to so many, but to us, he was a unique, loving, caring and especially loyal man. We are going to really miss him.

It has been a pleasure and honour to be able to spend so much quality time with him in the past few years, and especially to assist with his happiness and care since Mum died last year.

Please feel free to circulate this notice to his friends, associates and admirers.

Recently there was a half hour TV program on Tony Gaze and his wonderful life. I watched it then and replayed it many, many times because here was the hero of the adventure books of my childhood in reality. His experiences in WWII and later motor racing cannot be repeated by modern generations, so I guess he was lucky to have been born when he was, but so were countless others who didn't do the things he did. I hope he enjoyed his life because I certainly enjoyed watching and reading his story and just knowing he was one of us made me proud.
Today's news, inevitible at some time, deeply saddens me. My condolences to his family.

Saddened to read this news from Chris.

Last time I saw Tony was at Diana's Memorial Service last August and understandably he was looking very frail.

I recall from a conversation with Chris that day, he was keeping a close eye on Tony at the time. I have to admit surprise upon reading that Tony kept his independence as long as he did. But he's of a generation where all experiences were treated with stoic effort right to end.

Given Diana's Memorial at the church had suitable 'motors' sitting outside, in the form of ex Davison & Lawson Alfas. It will only be suitable that this custom also befits Tony's Service. Just wonder whether they can get a Spitfire to do a fly past. Truly befitting of a gentleman of this calibre.

Maybe that will have to be left to Lord March to bring to fruition, as part of a suitable Tribute to Tony Gaze at Goodwood Revival.

My condolences to the Gaze & Davison family and friends.

The Davison children truly embraced him as their new 'father' in the wake of Lex's death. Unfortunately there was later some division in the family towards each other, but Tony was never considered anything but what he was.

A great man in many ways, so quietly spoken in old age (I never knew him before that!) and the perfect partner for the woman I knew as the First Lady of Australian motor sport.

Joyce Smith (1931 - 2013) obituary:

Alice Joyce Smith of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away August 4, 2013 after a courageous 34-months battle with leukemia.
She was born to Frederic H. and Alice I. (Lewis) Uphoff in North Platte, Nebraska, on August 21, 1931. Joyce attended Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and School, where she was the church organist during high school. She worked at O’Connor’s Department store and helped her mom serve the troops during WWII at the North Platte Canteen. Joyce attended Girls State in 1947 and graduated from North Platte High School in 1948. That fall Joyce attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and served as the first dorm president of Johnson House. Joyce pledged Alpha Gamma Delta sorority where she serviced as an officer, Rush Chairman and later was honored to serve as Chapter Advisor. She helped pay her way through college by working for Reverend Mattingly and NWU Dean Dr. Deal. After Wesleyan, she married Bill Smith on October 26, 1952. They founded Speedway Motors as partners that same year while Joyce was working for Henry Brandt, Chairman of the Nebraska State Fair Board. Joyce loaned her husband “Speedy Bill” the $300 he needed to start Speedway Motors.
Throughout the years, Joyce’s outgoing and friendly nature served Speedway customers well. Joyce was initially Speedway’s bookkeeper, parts runner and counter gal and always served as Financial Officer, Corporate Secretary and Treasurer. In 1961 she co-founded B&J Partnership, a commercial real estate company which came to be known as Speedway Properties. These entities earned many national and local awards including the 1993 Cornerstone Award and ten Community Improvement Awards. Joyce’s six-decade involvement with Speedway Motors earned her a wonderful reputation throughout the racing world and performance industry. She attended countless races, car shows and trade shows across America. Joyce walked the fields at the Hershey, PA swap meet for over 40 years, was there when SEMA was founded and was the first vendor at the NSRA Street Rod Nationals. She was a fixture at the SEMA Hall of Fame for over 30 years. Her tremendous impact on the automotive community was recognized in 2005 when she was presented with the Goodguys Woman of the Year Award.
As the proud co-founder of the Museum of American Speed, Joyce‘s love and knowledge of racing and rodding history will be a continuing influence for future generations. As a respected businesswoman, Joyce was honored to serve and direct many organizations, several as their first female board member. She also received Nebraska Wesleyan’s Alumni Achievement Award. Joyce was a trailblazer as a tireless working mom who labored 60-plus hour weeks at Speedway while raising her four boys. She still found time to be a Cub Scout den mother, library volunteer and Sunday school teacher at St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was a proud member for 59 years. She always felt blessed with her boys who all would go on to have the pleasure of working in the business with their beloved mother. Joyce loved reading, her garden, and playing the piano. Joyce’s friendly, kind, outgoing personality was genuine. Joyce liked people and they liked her. Until Sunday, she said she never had a day's rest since she meet “Speedy Bill,” her beloved husband and partner of 61 years.

The one thing you might have to drop if you perservere (and I really hope you do) is the links to TNF threads. Feel free to copy the below and amend from that if it helps. I'm not the brightest when it comes to formatting and/or codes, but there are tools on there that mean you should be able to rescue some of this. Of course, I do appreciate that you shouldn't have to.

An obituary for Peggy Bishop has been published by the OCALA STAR BANNER:

Margaret (Peg) Bishop, a longtime resident of Ocala, FL, passed away on August 21, 2013 in San Rafael, CA, where she lived for the past year.
Peg was born on November 5th, 1925 in Cortland, NY and is survived by her husband of 66 years and man of her dreams, John Malcolm Bishop; her son, Mitch Bishop, his wife Julia Bishop and four amazing granddaughters: Sarah, Alena, Devon and Samantha. Peg was pre-deceased by her three sisters: Barbara Holden, Lorna Murphy, Phyllis Fitts and two sons: John Marcus Bishop and Marshal Bishop.
Peg graduated from Cortland High School in 1943 and married John in 1947 after he returned from duties in the Navy. She graduated as an RN in 1946 from Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, NY. Peg contracted polio in 1949 and battled back to work as an operating room nurse for many years. In 1969 Peg helped start the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) with her husband John, which became the premier professional sports car racing organization in North America through the 1970's and 1980's. The business took them all across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe and Japan.
In 1989 they sold the business and retired to the Leeward Air Ranch in Ocala, where she spent time with John flying in their airplanes and building amazing friendships. She even took pilot lessons and soloed, earning her own wings. At Leeward, Peg was active with the bridge club and other social activities. She was a devoted cat lover, a cherished part of the sports car racing world, and a caring neighbor on the Air Ranch.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), 610 S. Decatur Street, Watkins Glen, NY 14891-1613.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
