I recently went to the ALMS race at Mid Ohio. I was sitting in the esses when the 009 car of Pedro Lamy locked the rear wheels and flew thru the air. The pa announcer said it was 146 feet . I saw it but I was wondering if anyone recorded the race or if the clip of the Aston Martin flying thu the air was on the web anywhere.

Thanks,
Neuz

I was at Mid Ohio as well, although didn't get to see the flight; I was over in the carousel at the time. I have to think, though that a video clip will show up on You Tube or something at some point. I saw somewhere that they evidently showed footage during the CBS broadcast, but I didn't tape it. I expected to see it on Wind Tunnel last night but didn't see anything about it.

I would think you are right that it will show up somewhere.
If anyone has a copy of the race I would be willing to pay a small fee for it :)

I was watching on TV but either they didn't show it or I missed it as I was flipping back and forth between ALMS and Champ Car. But the CBS coverage was truncated anyway.

Either way, the pace of the factory P2 Porsches was staggering.

Er...? What happened? As far as I understand, you mean he locked his brakes and flew off the crown of the race track?

They did show it on the CBS coverage..
locked brakes, spun, the side of the car hit the kerbs and launched the car high in the air

The third image from the top is disturbing. How come there's steel cables in a runoff area?

Did Pedro hit them?

Edit: and it looks like the second picture happend after the third. The car is already airborne. Thank God nobody got hurt.

Those steel cables are very far back, it's just the camera angle

Also they are not in the runoff..the car is traveling to the right..not to the back...

Adding to this, the runoff is downhill going from the edge of the track, so it makes the distance to the cables look even closer because you can only see a little strip of grass.

Wow, Aston Martins can fly.

Was it pedro Lamy?
This guy is very unlucky.
The promising Portuguese driver won F-Opel and then...

Crashed and got badly hurt in the same weekend Senna and Rotzenberger died in Imola 94.
Flew away in the javeling Mercedez at LeMans.
And now catapulted with the Aston.

That car is very strong, it seems to be intact.

Lamy never experienced a flip in the CLR. It was Mark Webber twice in the #4 Mercedes in the practice sessions and then Peter Dumbreck had the spectacular race incident in the #5 Mercedes.

That was a very scary incident. Luckily that car didn't flip when it was launched.

He wrecked a Lotus in (pre-season?) testing 1994, IIRC. Broke both his legs in the crash.

Yeah, I remember reading a story told by a mechanic that they went looking for him and once a the crash site they only saw some debris but there was no trace of Pedro and the car. They ended up finding him off track in some sort of tunnel or so...

From the grandprix.com driver profiles:

Lamy stayed with Team Lotus in 1994 but once again he was unlucky and at Imola had a big crash, running into the back of JJ Lehto`s stalled Benetton at the start of the ill-fated race. He was unhurt. Just after the Monaco Grand Prix Lamy was testing at Silverstone when the rear wing fell off his car at Abbey. The car took off, flew into and through the debris fencing and ended up in the pedestrian tunnel under the track on fire. Lamy was fortunate to survive the crash but escaped with two smashed legs which kept him out of racing until the middle of 1995

Thanks for the corrections, folks.

Lemans: I though he did bcs there were several Mercedes flights and he was lined up in one of the teams, just like Zonta.

Imola: I recall somebody crashing in the back of a car stuck in the grid (Letho?). I though it was Lamy.

Easy to lose track of LMP cars that have flipped.

There were also a BMW LMP V12 flight, Bill Auberlen at Road Atlanta
A Porsche GT98 flight with Yannick Dalmas also at Road Atlanta.

Flying Aston video

The Aston flew 22 feet further than the Wright Brothers' maiden flight.

I wonder if anyones ever tried to actually engineer a car to fly like that and set a few distance records? Would be pretty fun to watch.

If the Aston hadn't been so heavy would it have given Lamy such a stable flight? Lucky boy - again.

Alessandro Zanardi (Team Lotus's third driver at the time) said they found him because they heard him screaming at the top of his lungs...
