unregistered, Doug was 85 when he died, that's old to me!
Another man whose efforts, both driving & designing, are far, far more noteworthy than the mere statistics beside his name.
RIP & thanks, Louis Douglas Serrurier.
Hieronymus, thank you for the information. May I ask where Doug died?

Slightly O/T but I recall seeing the Lola T70 which Doug was driving at Roy Hesketh in December '65 , and it had a sticker on the nose simply stating "Bloody Hell", which sums up I think our initial reaction to the then-new big V8 engined cars. It merited a pic with my Kodak Brownie.

Actually I was reasonably talented with a camera, but the pic I referred to was very much a still-life in the pits....;)

1. Easter Races Roy Hesketh Circuit, Pietermaritzburg April 1958 : The leaders stream thru Henry's Knee - #20 is Doug in the Speedy Engineering Climax Special, first car he built, #18 - Harry Pierce in Pierce MG Special (I think this car races now in UK historics) chased by Vic Procter #26 Kieft-Climax ; #10 Gus Macleod in MG Special and #14 Mike Hutchons in MG Special.
2. 1961 Royal Show Races at Hesketh - #2 is Bruce Johnstone's ex Syd van der Vyver Cooper-Alfa T43 ; #4 is Doug's LDS Alfa. Bruce is on left fettling the Cooper. Doug in black with hands on hips. Compare the pits then to the "hygenic" things of to-day!
3. Doug in Lola T70 during a Rand 9 Hours leading a Ford GT40.
4. John Love practises the fast LDS-Porsche for the 1961 Natal GP at Westmead.

Jackie Pretorius in Doug's Lola T140 or T142? It was said that Doug used parts of this car to make up his Walls Lola T70 spyder for the enduro races. Then when the enduro season ended used parts of the T70 to make up the F5000 car.
Maybe Allen Brown can tell more?
B&W photo shows Doug in the Cooper T51 Maserati in 1961 Natal GP at Westmead.
I will look for some LDS pix tomorrow.

1. Doug Serrurier in LDS Alfa #6 leads George van Straaten in LDS Ford during 1964 Rand Autumn Trophy at Kyalami
2. Steve Mellet in LDS Alfa (10) leads George van Straaten in LDS Ford #14 in Rand Winter Trophy 1964 at Kyalami
3. #6 Doug in new car 1965 Rand Winter Trophy Kyalami
4. #4 Sam Tingle in his much used LDS at Rand Winter.
1964 Republic Festival Trophy at Kyalami. Side view of Doug in LDS. This was a hastily cobbled car and he might have used the old Porsche engine this race?
Lionel Wilmot in his neat #16 LDS
The last LDS? Practice session for new car.
Sam Tingle in 2.7 Climax engined LDS. A Brabham inspired car?
Gordon Jones, cigarette in mouth pushes. Gordon was a long time mechanic for John Love. Love's T79 Tasman Cooper is behind in the Kyalami pit lane.
John Love in white overall watches. Maybe not even Nomex then?
Famous mechanic, car builder Eddie Pinto on left with spanner.
Look at the tyres at back. They did not then know how close to slicks those back tyres would become!

Last 2 photos for a while. I leave tomorrow for maybe 2 weeks outside RSA.
2. Clive Puzey in Jack Holme's LDS-Brabham F2. 1967 Rand Spring Trophy. I think this was inspired by the Willment Brabham raced by Paul Hawkins in South Africa end of 1964.
1. Doug in Cooper T45 -Alfa during December 1960 South African GP. Maybe T43 bodywork? In those days they weren't called T-anythings. They were F2 1958 Mk.3.
This car probably inspired the first of his rear engined "Serrurier" cars soon to be called LDS.

Doug had sold his regular LDS Alfa to Lionel Wilmot and "cobbled up" the old LDS Porsche (see #16 photo at 1961 Natal GP with John Love driving) for the race. He actually fitted it with an Alfa engine but still used the old Porsche engine cover.

We have established that he ran an Alfa in this race in the "old LDS-Porsche" chassis.

Lew is very knowledgeable on the subject AND passionate about getting his facts correct.
I have asked Marc to post an interesting photo on the van Straaten LDS.

Bruce Johnstone in the Volvo Special at Novelty Hillclimb, Durban. Late 1960.
Bruce bought the car from Doug, who had campaigned it with a 1100 Climax engine. Maybe later modded to 1220 cc?
Bruce fitted a 1580 Volvo engine and spruced it up as well as making some mods. The combination of his sound preparation and good driving ensured the longlevity of the front engined racer and also some good results.

Here is a 1951/52 season photo of the South African speedway team with Doug standing on the far right. As well as riding for Springbok representative teams, he also rode in the English league before taking up a career on four wheels:
