Suggestions for 'iconic' race cars from 1900-1970?

Hello everyone this my first post/thread here.
This a great forum very interesting and informative!

I have alway been interested in car and motorcycle racing from all eras .

Professionally I am a Sculptor, and have landed what looks to be an interesting
project, related to motor sports.

For this I initially need to narrow down a small list of iconic race machine/driver
combinations for each decade between 1900 and 1970.[the choice of great machines and
drivers seems endless...]

Thus far I have created an Auto union C type representation.
And it has been suggested I create a Brabham BT19 for the second piece.
I have not found much in the way of photo reference for this on the net
though it does seen very similar to the BT20. [more conveniently placed exhaust
system to model as well]

Another vehicle that caught my eye was the Fiat S76 from 1912.

Anyhow I would appreciate further suggestions anyone might have.

1900s - 1906 GP Renault
1910s - 1914 GP Mercedes
1920s - Bugatti T35
1930s - Auto Union C-type
1950s - Maserati 250F
1960s - Lotus 25/33
1970 - Lotus 72.

Lots yummy machines there to be thinking about.
The Maserati looks lovely.
The older cars are going to great fun to find decent pics of!!
Found a a few of the Renault and mercedes pretty quickly.
Ideally I would love all sorts of detailed pic of the car parts
etc to get a good feel for what makes the machines tick.

Welcome to the forum, wheelock!

For the 1930s I'd suggest a Mercedes (e.g. W125) rather than an Auto Union, as the Auto Union was quite atypical with it's central engine position, whereas the the Mercedes is more representative of The Norm, yet still a high-tech (for its day) German Silver Arrow, which is quite iconic for the 1930s.

Otherwise I agree with Pete's list.

As far as cars are concerned, really excellent choices, Pete!

Wheelock asked for car/driver combinations - as such Nuvolari/Alfa Romeo Tipo B comes in mind as well of course for the 30s (or Caracciola/Mercedes W125).

Your drivers are Szisz-Lautenschager-Williams (or Dreyfus?)-Rosemeyer-Fangio-Clark-Rindt BTW?

For teens, might I suggest 1914 Peugeot , it didn't go too badly on other side of the pond either... And that hump on the back is particulary fetching.

And Maser has to be early model, not those long nosed tipos of latter years.

There are just so many great vehicles from every era!!


I have added the H16 powered BRM to list the list just because that
outrageous engine bulging out the rear would look great. :)

Alfa Romeo 158/59 that raced pre-war and the 1940s/50s and was used by the Farina and Fangio to win the first two drivers world championships in 1950/51.

If sports cars are allowed in, I would like to add the 1960s Ford GT40 .

Wot, no Ferrari?

I am emphatically not a Ferrari fan but I still have to think they count as 'iconic'. There ought to be room for one in there. The 1961 Sharknose Dino 156 maybe, or the 312 from 1968 or 69?

I agree. And for the 70s, the Porsche 917.

Yes, a very nice list Steve, but he asked for 'a small list of iconic race machine/driver
combinations for each decade between 1900 and 1970' so you need to winnow that down a lot to allow room for cars from the five previous decades.

Thanks again for all the suggestions folks. :)

The sports car suggestions are great, but I am more interested in the open cockpit/wheelers [at this stage]
these enable the driver and the dynamics of the car to be best shown.

The sculptures are not exact scale model type things more a gentle stylization to emphasize the
the movement of the cars and their drivers.

Large selections from each period are quite welcome, after all I am sure all everyone has their favorite era[s].

The range is likely to be expanded anyhow [if things go well].

Isn't the driver slightly too big in comparison with the size of the car?

He is meant to be.
The whole vehicle is subtly reworked.
The production pieces will be colour toned.
Think of it as a cartoon , a bit of a toy car look also.


The model has a nice chunky presence in the flesh.

Couple of alternative suggestions:

1900s - Gabriel on the Mors

1920s - Benoist in the Delage as a tribute to perhaps the most heroic driver of all; or Murphy's Duesenberg

for the 1960s, you may want to consider the 1967 Eagle F1.
In terms of sportcars, Ferrari 512 and Porsche 917 are almost 'must have' in my mind
for the 1970s, I would suggest the Lotus 79 - beautiful 'clean' lines.

It's difficult to whittle the list down. How about this selection which traces the evolution of the racing car?

1906 Szisz in a Renault - the first grand prix
1914 Lautenschlager in a Mercedes - the end of the Edwardian era and all it suggests
1928 Chiron in a Bugatti - le 'pur sang'
1935 Nuvolari in an Alfa Romeo P3 - the German GP was the greatest drive by the greatest driver ever
And you've already got Nuvolari or Rosemeyer in the Auto Union
1951 Fangio in a 158 Alfa Romeo - his first championship
1952 Ascari in a Ferrari 500 - the most successful postwar car or 1957 Fangio Maserati 250F - the German GP was his greatest race. Either car epitomises a 1950's front engined car
1963-1965 Jim Clark in a Lotus 25 or 33 - another champion in probably the smallest and slimmest car
You say you're doing the H16 BRM
1975-77 Niki Lauda in a Ferrari 312T or T2 - one of the greatest exponents in a winged 'modern' car

If you do a 1914 GP Mercedes, you've got a customer (depending on the price indeed :D !) The Auto-Union seems really nice :up:

I haven't actually decided to do the BRM yet, just added it to my list,plus that engine would be
very time consuming to make!

Found a pic of Lautenschlager , He should look great with his mustache.

I have also discovered the Blitzen Benz, What a car!!!

I must have seen too many photos of Auto Unions with Nuvolari at the wheel! How big is the model? It's impossible to tell from the photo.

For the sake of completeness, if your years are the end of each decade rather than the beginning, you will need one from 1891-1900 - which would have to be Emile Levassor's Panhard-Levassor (Old No. 5).

The model is about 14 inches long.
I am still waiting for the client to decide whether they are going to go ahead with a range
of further designs.
