SPOILERS BELOW
I saw Disney & Pixar's Cars today and it has a cameo by Michael Schumacher in it. His character is called "Michael Schumacher Ferrari". It was cute, the whole American racing vs. European racing bits were cute. Also tifosi representation!!!

Some of the movie details are amazing. The vapor trails in the sky are skidmarks. The mountains are Cadillac tail fins ah lah Cadillac ranch in Arizona. The fans in the court house are car radiator fans. The lights at the drive in restaurant light up in a V8 firing order. The 51 Hudson, Paul Newman, is the wise old car who won plenty races in the 50s. Authentic Hudson sounds come from the car. The Hudson has the authentic color from an original color chip. Number 43, 71 Plymouth, is painted by a color chosen by Petty himself. Petty Blu.
Even the bugs that hit the windshields are, you guessed it, VW bugs.
Mc Queen falls in love ( yeah, It's a love story) with a 916 Porsche.

The movements of the cars reflected the correct inertia depending on the weights of the cars and the drifting and racing are authentic lines and sequences.
A Fiat 500 is the local tire store owner and his helper is a forklift that looks like a Vespa moto-scooter. The town on forgotten Route 66 gets a reputation because of McQueen, who wins the Piston Cup Championship, which leads to the arrival of a F430 and a Maserati Quatraporte. Schumacher asks the Fiat 500 if this is where he can get tires. The Fiat promptly falls over in faint. Schumacher speaks to the Vespa in Italian. The Vespa falls over in a faint after a pause. Fantastic.

I saw it the other day, bloody great, love the digs at SUV's and Jap Cars. Definately the best car movie I have seen. That pitstop was tops!
And where can I go tractor tipping?

Just watched it - it was, very simply the best film of the year so far - and I genuinely agree with the comment that it was more realistic than Driven. Not only was the plot far more beleivable, but Driven just looked like Computer-Generated Crap...
Personally I can't help but think that McQueen looked ACES in the Candy Flake and White walls...
I'm going to use it to re-programme my neice. Perfect.
Still surprised that MS was a 430 rather than an Enzo or - perhaps - a 599, but I guess that FR isn't so F1 and the Enzo isn't for sale... I'd have loved to have seen Fittipaldi show up as a CART car, shame.

Maybe they are trying to add an F1 driver for each country

In that case; they should have had Mansell as an F40; that would have been about 1 gerzillion times more Über.

I'm not sure that is true, even here in the US it's Michael Schumacher at the end.Originally posted by Scorg

The US running length is 116 minutes, while the ROW is listed as 121 minutes. I wonder of the extra five minutes is the localisation for the different markets and contains scenes with the other voiceover actors, i.e. Fisichella, Hakkinnen, etc.?

Schumacher actually had two Maseratis with him, IIRC. Was it really his voice, though. I guess it was.
On a sad note: the accident The King (Richard Petty?) has in the final race at Los Angeles International Speedway reminded me of Greg Moore's crash in 1999.

I thought it was a great movie myself.
Phantom didn't mention Click and Clack as Lightning McQueen's sponsors though.
Those 2 brothers do a moderately famous radio show on NPR called Car Talk. Its quite a hilarious show and they were on perfect form in the movie.

Click and Clack? What? Do you want me to tell you the whole movie?;) Another thing to watch is the reflection in the paint of all the cars from lights to mountains etc.

With so much going on, try to notice how well black is used. The tar covered paving machine, with all it's subtle darkness is just beautiful. Look at the tires! Mator the tow truck has one sorry set of rubber and the rendering of those tires is simply amazing. And the rust...my god, the rust!!!
The portrayal of speed has never been done better.
Also note: You might think an animation is aimed at kids, there are NO kids in this movie! This movie made me feel like a kid, I think that's what the makers hoped to do. I felt exhilarated when I left.

Regarding a "European" version I heard that several drivers were being used: Mika, Kimi, Fisi, Alonso - not sure if they will all be in the same version or if it's being tweaked for each language version or if there is only one European version that uses all the drivers in the same movie. I know that Mika's done his voiceover already. Niki Lauda is also adding his voice to it somewhere.

After seing the movie I was really suprised about how well I like it and I will buy the DVD when it come out.
What McQueen died by the way? Chad? I know he was serious injured during practise to a race earlier this year, but I think he made it.

I had forgotten about that! That was really good, too.

I believe that the forklift was an Isetta.

All in all, a great movie for the male population. I took my (soon to be) 5-year old son to see it on the opening weekend. He sat completely silent and still throughout the whole thing (a major accomplishment). On the way out, he pronounced it to be, "The bestest movie I've EVER seen!" We will most definitely be buying it on DVD as soon as it comes out.
Although it didn't have as many "adults will only get it" jokes as, say, Shrek it did have a couple of funny lines in it. Mater's "left front lugnuts" line was pretty funny, along with his "He did WHAT in his cup?" line.
Another "inside story": The blue station wagon that was "The King"s wife was just like the one that Richard Petty's wife used to take to the races in the early days with the kids. The voice, naturally, was done by Richard's wife.
And the Hudson Hornet did actually win a couple of NASCAR championships back in the 50's. Oddly enough, my Page-a-Day calander had that as the car of the day the next week.
And stay until the credits are done. There's a really funny bit set at the Drive-in movies that was done as a tribute to John Ratzenburger's work with Pixar. From what I've read, he didn't know what they were up to when he recorded the voices for it. He didn't find out until he saw the premiere.

You're a terrible, terrible person.

Or a 911 - depends which way you think he was tilting - bit odd that she turned around, rather than putting her flap down when he saw her pinstriping... Maybe it goes up when they get excited...?Originally posted by 911

WTF?! Lovely...so I guess the female population wouldn't "get it" or like it because...actually I can't come up with a reason as to why the film wouldn't be "a great movie for the female population". Next time you may want to hide your arrogance and hopefully you don't pass it on to your son.

Woahh, the film is clearly aimed at the male audience rather than a female one, but it doesn't mean you can't enjoy it too.Originally posted by rce
