I may be wrong, but I think the only NASCAR driver with two first names next year will be a guy called Juan Pablo! Think about that.

I could be wrong, but wouldn't Pablo be his middle name? It's certainly not his last name, which I think is where you were trying to go with this thread.

Two first names? Is that even possible? My take is that is a first (Juan) and then a second name (Pablo).

anyway, I don't care

True, he was never referred to as Juan Pablo Montoya during the CART years.

I don't see why that is such a big thing anyway. Hill's full name is Damon Graham Deveruex Hill, but did you ever hear him called that? There must be loads of drivers with middle names, I never got why JPM got singled out for a full name usage in F1.

Still, what about surnames? I remember the days when Helio Castroneves was still called Helio Castro-Neves. I always found it a bit sad when he Americanised it. I always assumed he wanted less emphasis on the "Castro", but who knows...

And Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Bill Elliott to name three more!

As far as drivers who always use their first and middle name (which I think is the original intent of this thread), it's just not common in the US for boys/men to use both names. While growing up I did have a friend who everyone called Marc-Joey, but that's a rare thing to see here, especially compared to Spanish-, French-, and Italian-speaking countries.

My wife can sigh and my 3 year old daughter immediately blurts out my first and middle names! They're still used, usually under less than ideal circumstances...

It is obvious from reading this thread that many people are simply not getting what having two first names means in this context.

It means being referred to by two names as one's every day use name... not having a last name that in other circumstances is also a first name. Think John Boy from the Waltons... Boy is not has last name, his last name is Walton and everyone calls him John Boy. Obviously Juan Pablo Montoya falls in the category... many/most people call him Juan Pablo.

Its somewhat all too common in the southern US and is kind of hayseedish (along with being commonly referred to by your first 2 initials). That's why its poking fun at Nascar and kind of amusing that there are currently no Nascar drivers who fit the mold but Juan Pablo (not one of the good ol'boys) does.

I did mention initials. I think its an attempt to appear to ditch the hick image while not ACTUALLY doing so.

(Nobody take that the wrong way... I watch and enjoy NASCAR every week and I personally live in the southern US.)
