I'm interested in finding out anything and everything about the Mexican Road Race. If anyone can point me in the right direction as to books, videos or websites or can share with me what they personally know about the races, I'd really like to hear from you. I've only found a small bit of info on the 1953 and 54 race. I believe it was cancelled in 55.

You will find results here http://www.wsrp.wz.cz/
For the early years click on Non-Championship and look for Carrear Panamerica then World Sports Car Championship for 1953/54.

The definitive book on the Carrera is, as far as I know, the Adriano Cimarosti's one: "Carrera Panamericana / México". Edited by Automobilia, ISBN 88-85058-93-0. Is a large format book, with lots of b&w pictures, text in italian/english/french, memoires of drivers and journalists such as Piero Taruffi, Troy Ruttman, Bernard Cahier, Denis Jenkinson... and an appendix with the rankings. A must have...

Well gentlemen, I got out of the old Historic Mustang several years ago but my brother (Gary Jones Motorsports) still plugs away. GJM took two cars to the annual event in Mexico and both are on the trailer trying to get back into the States.

Great photographs here of the 2008 event: http://www.gofastspo...va/pana2008.htm

Another Mustang that had a tough time in Mexico this year.

True. See also Carrera Panamericana by Daryl Murphy, Motorbooks International, 1993, ISBN 0-87938-734-3, probably out-of-print by now. Then there's the old 1950s Floyd Clymer softbound book, which I can't find just this minute; it may have been reprinted a decade or so ago.

For a very entertaining look at the "current" Carrera (well, current as of fifteen years or so ago), pick up a copy of the "Pink Floyd La Carrera Panamericana" video. Unfortunately, I don't know that it's available on DVD, so you may have to dig that VCR out of the attic, but if you like Pink Floyd at all you'll be most entertained:

You can find at Raresportsfilms two very good films on the 1953 and 1954 races on DVD.

I have a book "La Carrera Panamericana" History & Passion published by Adriano Cimarosti and Dominique Dricot. Editions GSN, Brussels 2000, ISBN : 2-940125-52-X
The book covers the 1950-1954 races in brief and the revival events from 1988 - 1999.
I believe it was a special, limited edition ordered by my former employer CityBird Airlines who sponsored an Oldsmobile in CityBird colors that finished 5th in the 1999 edition. Everyone at CityBird got a copy of the book. I could save some copies when the company went bankrupt on 2001 but unfortunately, I gave them all away (but mine).

There is a review in one of the current magazines of a new book by John Tipler; La Carrera Panamericana, published by Veloce, see website, at £45, which covers the original races and the retros. I have not seen Tipler's work on other topics or this one, so cannot comment. 3 or 4 years ago there was a picture book/video boxed item covering the Lancia 6 car team exploits in the 1953 event, shot for Lancia on 16mm. Very much a personal choice, slightly faded pictures and sometimes grainy film.

To see a review of the new Carrera Panamericana book, have a look at the event's 'official' blogger's comments - you'll need to scroll down to find the review: <http://www.lacarrera2007.blogspot.com/> but it's everything an author could wish for!

Paul, it all looks a bit "clean", possibly from a film? Would they have had the helmets/goggles before starting, or were they given after the roll? The roof dome post-roll looks very conveniently shaped

I hadn't considered that. It looks like the driver is being given a small trophy in the second picture, I wonder if that's significant in any way?

Dave Scully in Los Angeles has been working on a book on Americans in the Carrera for about 10 years. I have no idea when he will finish it.

The wrecked 1950 Cadillac is the Race #9 entry driven by Rodolfo Casteneda and Florencia Estrada in the 1950 race. From the entry list in the Goodman book, the car is listed as the "Mexico car, entered by the President's offices". They rolled the car on the first day, and again on the second, but finished the event placing 27th.

Another book with a nice chapter on the Carrera Panamericana is Chris Jones' ROAD RACE. It was printed in 1977 by David McKay; ISBN is 0-679-50710-8, LCC is 76-43547. I suspect it's long out of print, but it might be worth looking out for.

The promoters cast far and wide. This is the covering letter they sent to the Western Australian Sporting Car Club in 1954. Unfortunately the enclosed Official Rules aren't on the file any more.

Carrera Panamericana "Mexico" By Adriano Cimarosti

Did the original edition of this book have a separate appendix with results?.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff Weinbren.

There is a current paperback edition of the Murphy book. It's available at Amazon.com (see the link) for $15.95. It's small at 6" X 9", the paper is not elegant, and the pictures are black and white and the selection is not as good as in the original book, but it has the same information regarding entrants, results, story of the races, etc.
