Fontana claims that three or four hours before the race Jean Todt visited the Sauber motorhome and told the Swiss team, which used Ferrari engines at the time, that the Saubers must block Jacques Villeneuve if they were in a position to do so in order to help Michael Schumacher win the World Championship.

More revelations of cheating from Ferrari. Surprise

Does it really matter?

Schumacher Snr was 'removed' from the championship for unsportsmanlike behaviour, so I'd imagine a simple case of blocking doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

Move on, nothing to see here.

Ps. what's the betting patrese comes out and says he had to hold up senna during mansell's 1992 WC efforts?

It might be Fontana's excuse for failling to stay in F1.
A mediocre driver that is seizing a ride in the Ferrari Conspirancy Bandwagon.

Who knows???

Add it to the pile. :smoking:

How is it an excuse for his F1 career? It might just be that he's telling the truth?

Another quote from Fontana:

"Schumacher nunca me lo agradeció y Todt, como perdieron el campeonato, se fue caliente de los boxes y nunca más hablé con él", contó Fontana, quien sólo corrió las cuatro carreras finales del '97 con Sauber, que recibía motores de Ferrari.

"Schumacher never thanked me for it and Todt, as they lost the championship, angrily left the boxes and I never again talked to him"

As dicussed in the other thread, in the original version (in Olé newspaper and his website) most of the emphasis seems to be on the ingratitude of Todt/Schumacher, and how it allegedly cost him his F1 career

Sorry! Didn't see the other thread.

Well, that's all I can find about it costing him his career:

"Y, meses después, esa situación me terminó de enterrar con Tyrrell. Craig Pollock, el manager y amigo de Villenevue, compró Tyrrell. Y más allá del dinero que puso Ricardo Rosset para 1998, Pollock me terminó de bajar el pulgar por esa maniobra. Increíble. Pero ya es historia, una anécdota. "

"Months later this thing ended my chances (of signing) with Tyrrell. Craig Pollock, manager and friend of Villeneuve bought Tyrrell. And beside the money put in by Rosset for 98, Pollock gave me the thumb down for my maneuver. Incredible, but that's history already"

I forgot how blatant that was. Fontana was almost stationary when letting MS through...

Hardly incredible, surely? Pollock had evidence that Fontana was willing to compromise his own and his team's performance to support someone else's.

Completely agree with you. Could never imagine somebody like DC doing this in the same situation this year. Tyrrell would have been better off with Fontana though. Rosset was terrible. :

The Tyrrell drive was his only hope for a regular drive (he had been subbing at Sauber, after Sauber ran out of drivers, because he still had a testing contract.. even though Sauber didn't actually use him as a tester anymore).
