Several items from the A.A.A. archives as recorded on the Gordon White microfilm that might be of interest on a few points:
Contest Board Bulletin No. 3, dated March 31, 1916:
"It has been the custom at the close of each racing season, for several of the trade publications to tabulate the year's work of cars and drivers and to pick therefrom the champion car and driver. The result, owing to different methods of arriving at a conclusion, has been a lack of uniformity and a difference of opinion as to the unofficial 'champion.'
"It is proposed this year that the Contest Board take the matter up and officially designate the champion car and driver. The plan contemplated is that certain important events, open and accessible to a majority of the better cars and drivers shall be officially designated as 'A.A.A. Championship Award Events.' These events to be picked by the chairman upon receipt and approval of drafts of entry blanks. A schedule of points for points for places in such events will be evolved, determined by the character of each individual event. In this way the course, distance, number and charter of starters, etc., will all have an influence in the number of points awarded each place."
Contest Board Bulletin No. 4, dated April 30, 1916:
"C.G. Sinsabaugh, New York, and Al. G. Waddell, California, have been appointed members of the Contest Board."
