So there's a new show on Discovery beginning tonight at 10pm (Eastern time)

Here is the gist of the show:

Hosted by actor and racing enthusiast Yannick Bisson (Hockey Night, Sue Thomas F.B. Eye), Star Racer has discovered the most promising racecar drivers in the country, and for one exceptionally talented driver, will make his or her pro racing dreams come true. From a rich field of young hopefuls, Star Racer is about the discovery of the one determined racer who blows away the competition; the one who takes the checkered flag and upholds the complex code of sportsmanship expected of a champion racer. At the end, the Grand Champion – the one who has all the right stuff to be declared Canada’s fastest racing star – will receive the ultimate prize: a full-season sponsored ride on Formula Star Mazada circuit with the AIM Racing Team.

Strap in for a ride that starts by narrowing down the field - go Karters, stock car drivers, motorcycle riders, sports car racers, street racers and speed demons from every driving discipline are cast and qualified at existing events held around the nation. Once qualified, the 16 finalists, (eight Karters; eight drivers from other racing sports, dubbed "the Others"; plus two wildcard racers in reserve) rally at the world famous Jim Russell Driving School on the legendary Le Circuit racecourse in Mt. Tremblant, Quebec. Split into two rival teams - Team Mazda and Team Castrol - the competition begins in earnest... on the track and off. Each driver will strive to master the science presented by the track, the cars and the competition.

The quest intensifies as the young dreamers are drilled by expert instructors, forced to adapt quickly and step-up to the rigours and demands of open wheel racecars.

A panel of superstars from the racing world, including Paul Tracy, Derek Daly, and Katherine Legge, judges the merit of each competitor through a series of evaluations, time-trials and full-throttle races. Their limits are tested by the track and stretched by the strain of living together - the friction of close quarters with competitors whose racing specialties are wildly different... and perhaps not fully appreciated or respected by their Star Racer peers. They must strive to balance their work together as teams against their solo racing aspirations - and keep and eye on the rearview mirror as the reserve racers nip at their heels, desperate to pull ahead on the track. Week by week, each racer must fight to survive the cut as each episode unfolds and the Star Racer field is whittled down.

Only the most determined and gifted driver will survive the quest on the course to take the final checkered flag. That racer will walk away with a dream fulfilled, a chance to blaze a path towards the big time with a full season's ride on a professional open-wheel racing team, and the title of Star Racer.

Star Racer: Episode 1
Tues., Oct. 24 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Channel and Discovery HD
Star Racer opens in the fast lane, from the world of big time racing at the Montreal Grand Prix. Host Yannick Bisson – a lifelong race fan – sets the stakes: for the next eight weeks, Star Racer will chronicle the discovery and the episode-by-episode elimination of the country's most promising young racers. In the opening episodes, Star Racer combs the country, attending racing events on a quest to find the best racers. At the starting line, eight racers from the Karting world and eight drivers from other racing disciplines will be gunning for the career-making title – but first, we have to find them.

In Episode One, meet 16 of the contending Karters, eight from the King Of The Bay Race in Barrie, Ont., and eight from the Quebec Cup in St. Roch, each selected by the attending officials to pre-qualify for the event. Then, meet the first three finalists from the other racing disciplines.

As the episode closes, the lines between the two groups, the Karters and the Others, are drawn.

Should be interesting. Anyone gonna watch?

Sorry, didn't know it was Discovery Canada. Just assumed it would be the same programming south of the border.

Yeah, the Dad of the spoiled - yet unhappy brat - surprised me when he said he had spent over 500K on a trailers, karts, parts, equipment etc. I men, I know it's expensive, but that is really  And there's the kid not enjoying a moment of it. :

The show has potential. I'll give it another watch to see how it develops. Can't see why rce doesn't like Yannick

No kidding

And I agree with the assessment of that kid who went from like 30th to 11th when they went to Quebec. The top 2 home drivers were all like playing team games and it was *their* home track . The kid went from 30th to 11th in an unfamiliar kart on an unfamiliar circuit. I hope he gets in and if eirther punk kid from Quebec gets in, I hope they get slaughtered.

I'm gonna love this show :)

I was disappointed with the first show. The producers seem to be trying to stereotype the drivers often referring to them as either hotheads or quiet types. When they let them speak for themselves it's only to show them saying how great they are. When they showed them racing they resorted to narrating over quick-cuts edits, like a music video, as if they don't believe the racing alone could be interesting.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now as they were constrained by the need to introduce everybody in the first hour, but they better start showing race highlights and real personalities so that I feel like I can involve myself in the show instead of trying to dictate everything to me.

Another lousy episode. The coming episodes looks promising if the preview is anything to judge by.

Oh who am I kidding. I'll watch every damn episode and hate every one of 'em. :

I should add that he is only just into the show. One of the bubble people, meaning he gets in properly if someone else is kicked out, injured or quits.

Goes to show how poor their initial selection of competitors was, that they almost left the top guy out. From the outset there were only 4 to 6 people who ever stood a chance of winning it. It would have been spectacular to see a full race series with a field filled by the 16 most promising drivers in the country. Surely Canada can represent itself better than we did with that lot of (mostly) chumps... though I'm sure they were all very nice people.

I agree with above. The gimmick have having racers from different disciplines wore off real quick when they coudn't handle the equipment they were given. They should scrap that for next season, and just grab the best 16 karters. Would have liked to see more of the races but I guess it has to appeal to a general audience.

I liked the choice of judges and the curcuit. I'll defeinitely be following Devin's progress next season and hope to meet him when I make my annual trip to Mosport.
