Need help with a bit of work place sillyness,

One of my work mates is convinced that Murray Walker lost one of his legs on the last day of the war,

We have scoured the net for evidence to prove him wrong, we have even widened the search to include his Dad but we can find no proof of murrays or his dads missing leg !

Please Help

I doubt your mate's theory has got a leg to stand on, really

If you keep talking when you put your foot in your mouth, the consequences may well be . . . . . . :)

He didn't mention it in his autobiography, and I doubt that it was something that could have slipped his mind. You'd tend to remember something like that, wouldn't you?

Murray Walker's autobiography is possibly the worst book I've ever read, the loss of a leg might have livened the story up a bit.

I believe a lack of seriousness is afoot... :p

To bring this thread slightly on topic - I do believe Murray has had both of his hips replaced, has he not?

Yes he has, he was walking with some difficulty before, which is where the original 'missing leg' idea may have originated.

Cant see a connection other than both on the telly, but I reckon your mate is getting mixed up with "Sweeney" "Mister Tom" actor John Thaw who had a prosthetic for many years. Dont think he was in the war though.

Quite often in his commentaries Muddly left himself without a leg to stand on, but physically I believe he has always remained fully equipped in that respect, though having had a double-barrelled hip replacement, followed by a replacement replacement....if you see what I mean. V. good bloke, too.

Didn't the television boxing commentator Reg Gutteridge lose a leg, perhaps this is what your colleague was thinking.

I am a big Steven Wright fan and love his one about the guy with wooden legs but real feet...

I've seen Murray in shorts - I didn't specifically study his legs but they did seem authentic.

That is not to say one, at least, was not a very good replica...

Are you sure about this ? In this obituary ............

http://www.tmaw.co.uk/johnt.html

It says at the age of 15 he tripped over a kerb and broke a bone in his foot which left him with a slight limp. He certainly ran about OK in the Sweeney in the late '70s. Nothing in there about him having a false leg. He was born in 1942 so he could not have been on active service during WW2

This is only a guess, but John Thaw was a heavy smoker, and it's quite common for smokers to lose toes after they go black through impaired circulation. I was in hospital many years ago, next to some poor bugger who was suffering from this. He'd started by having toes amputated, developed gangrene, not an uncommon thing apparently, and when I last saw him they'd removed one foot and the other leg just below the knee. And all brought about by smoking, so it could well have happened to John Thaw in later life, but like I said, I'm only guessing, and no connection with non-smoker Murray of course. Isn't it wonderful where we go sometimes on these threads?

Really?
I've heard of diabetics losing feet or legs, but you don't have to be a smoker to get diabetes

I thought Murrays father, Graham had a serious leg injury , although that might have been a motor cyle racing accident , but I'm sure JohnThaw didn't.

He was lost for words at some moments. Have seen Murray walk along some times and did not notice any silly walk.

All the silly talk would have diverted your attention no doubt.

It's call Peripheral Arterial Disease. Roughly 80% of toe and other extremity amputations as a result of circulation problems are smoking related. Not trying to put anyone off smoking of course, but we non-smokers can be really smug gits sometimes, can't we?

Maybe he's thinking about Paul Page (not a wartime injury but similar trauma), not Murray.
