Firstly, how come the car wasn't in its usual Rothmans colours? It was entered with Rothmans as its title sponsor, was Lexington some sort of local brand under the same ownership? (Kind of like when Williams ran in Winfield colours throughout 1998/99, even though they effectively had the same pay masters?)
Also, how come the regular driver Ian Scheckter wasn't in the car? Especially with him being South African I figured this race would be the last one he would miss?
Finally, how close did Stuck come to being involved in the Tom Pryce tragedy? Were they really side by side, was it just a matter of a couple of feet?
Thanks!

There have been a number of instances over the years where cars ran in the livery of a different brand than the regular sponsor. Just a couple that come to mind include the two McLaren M26s of Hunt and Tambay running in blue, white, and gold Lowenbrau beer colors at the US and Canadian GPs of 1978, the Lotus 78 of Nilsson running in red Imperial International colors at a race in 1977, and Keke Rosberg's McLaren MP4-2 running in yellow and white Marlboro light colors at a race in 1986. I am sure that there are a lot more than that.Originally posted by Andretti Fan
IIRC FerrariV12 is correct that Lexington is another Rothmans brand and did sponsor a number of SA drivers thru the years, in local and championship F1 races..

Ian was recovering from a shunt earlier on in the season at Killarney race track in Cape Town, he managed to cartwheel his March after touching Nols Niemand. Giles Villeneuve then plowed into Ian`s March turning it upsidedown. Dave Charlton boreing down on the accident just managed to brake in time, stopping just inches from Ians dangling head.
As a result Ian was out of action for about 2 months

Actually, if he did not "break" in time, he would have had a big "brake". ( or is it the other way around?)Originally posted by zakeriath

Thanks, edited
But if he did not stop in time, its Scheckters head that that would have broke.

They both had the extinguisher. And Hans Joachim brushed the leg of the guy that would be smashed against Tom Pryce's Shadow in half a second. The frames below explain how the tragedy happened: 2/3 of a second before the tragedyOriginally posted by Bill Becketts
Hans Stuck himself told me that he "Brushed the leg" of one of the (Two) Marshals that crossed the track to deal with Zorzi's Shadow.
I assume it was the one that wasn't holding the extinguisher.....

Testing the week before, its Ken Howes in the brown jumper and Roger Taylor fag in mouth. Out of interest what makes it rare??

Well, Formula Atlantic is not so well documented as, for example Grand Prix races are. And usually many testing pictures are rare pictures...Originally posted by zakeriath

I'm afraid it's very difficult to read this text from low-quality images we have.Originally posted by Valda

Nowadays it looks like on the picture below. But in the 70s there was no red background on the scutcheon, it was white. Also the colour of the lion in the center seems to be gold.Originally posted by Valda

This was a great little scrap during the opening laps of the 1977 SAGP, witness H-J and Jacques kicking their tails out on the Leeukop exit.

In the background, barely visible to the left of the VW Kombi and below "THE CITIZEN" advertising, Tom Pryce is catching up and would join the pair in a couple of laps...

Right, according to Motorsport Memorial his full name was Frederick Jansen van Vuuren. And he was just 19-year-old...

Did not remember the losses of Pryce and Pace being so close to each other.
Those were different times.
