Folks, a little help, please. I'm touching up a 1/18-scale diecast model of Niki Lauda's 312T and a friend of mine says Lauda's helmet matched the red on his car and the day-glo red on the driver figure's helmet is inaccurate. Is he correct? I've tried pulling images from the 'net but frankly I couldn't tell if the helmet color is day-glo red or just a shade brighter than the car's paint.

probably the guys in the nostalgia forum can help more on this matter.

now, if they only read the headers of the RC forum....

may be advisable to move this thread to TNF?

free advice, leave model/helmet alone, any repaint unless done professionally will look bad.
also, it will devalue the model...1/18 scale lauda's go for a mint on ebay...

I can check when I get home, I have a Lauda book to use as reference, there are some detailed photos.

Thanks for the advice. I wish the 312T came sans driver, but the guy that is going to do the painting for me is a professional diorama constructor.

Whether the helmet color could be accurately called 'day-glo' is debatable but it certainly did not match the ferrari 312T's red paint....

Just curious, do you have the very nice minichamps 312T or the now very highly priced Exoto one ? (I do know they made a version without the driver figure)

When I saw Lauda race in '76 his helmet was day-glo red.

Unfortunately the Exoto one. I'm really disappointed with the quality. The rear wing support is made up of two halves and you can see a big gap in between. I agree with you, my much 1/43 Minichamps 312T is much better made.

Thanks, Tenman, but a friend brought over a photo of Lauda from the 76 USGP and it appears the helmet color is correct. Now, if I can do something about those creepy eyes behind the visor...

I wouldn't recommend Pantone for any colour matching for Automotive finishes. They just don't have the range.

As far as I know Pantone is for printed matter colour matching only
