Jenks pic just unearthed showing Frank Nichols of Elva Cars and Stuart Lewis-Evans with their latest - 'MBW616' as discussed above - at Bodiam probably 1958.  On the original print Jenks wrote "I was meant to drive it later but it broke!".

Interesting that Vanwall's new Formula 1 star, Lewis-Evans, had the broad enthusiasm still to appear at this most modest of levels in a local hill-climb.  Note he is sporting the well-trimmed beard he adopted towards the end of his life...so tragically terminated by his accident in the Moroccan GP at the end of that year.

Great picture. Definitely 1958 with the Elva Mk IV. Note magnesium wheels. FTD 29.6 secs.

Frank Nichols treated the Bodiam Hill Climb as an end-of-season Elva party at his local hill climb close to the factory.

He put up the Elva Cup for FTD, presented at the Castle Hotel, Hastings.

Jenks was fastest closed car in the Porsche. Stuart Lewis-Evans also drove an Elva Courier that day, "33 seconds dead."

This was the debut for the Courier at Bodiam. What car was it?

Maybe more likely to have been the Castle Hotel in Bodiam (officially Robertsbridge)? When we visited the Castle in the mid-70s ("Collect key from lady in house opposite"), we adjourned there for lunch and learnt it was the only Guinness-owned pub in England at the time. Apparently Guinness owned the nearby hop (?) fields and when the directors visited to make their annual inspection of the crop, they were disappointed by the lunchtime offerings of the nearest pub - so they bought it.  No mention of their ownership on the pub's current website, though.

Here's DSJ in full flight at Bodiam '58 in his familiar Porsche 356 -

And a late-edit now to include this...'UYY 34' at last month's Goodwood Revival Meeting, in which it again acquitted itself pretty well, Robert Barrie driving her into 4th place in the Fordwater Trophy, from 10th on the grid.

Tony,

I think you are right, despite the newspaper report.

We have been at the Castle before.
