There are a number of Number Plates (NUB 120, 250GTO or OKV3) that a true classic sport and racingcars enthusiast knows by heart. Perhaps could invite to identify some famous cars bearing a bit lesser popular plates, such as:
K45.286, 8266-NV1, W83º4080, III 52114, 81825 Bo, 212038 Mi, W21º6170, 1125 W4.
Pls let us know your answers and... your proposals.

Nobody is allowed to cheat and look at this old thread
So here are my guesses:
81825Bo - a Bologna number threfore a Maserati - the 450S perhaps
212038Mi - a Milan number hence an Alfa Romeo - the Fangio Mille Miglia car?

K45.286 = Porsche Nr. 1
8266-NV1 = Bugatti 53 - 53001
W83º4080 = Porsche 356SL - 062
III 52114 = Not known (is it meant to be IIA 52114 = BMW 328 - 85.032)
81825 Bo = Ferrari 290S - 0646
212038 Mi = Alfa Romeo 6C3000M - 1361.00128
W21º6170 = Mercedes-Benz 300SLR - 0004/55
1125 W4 = Bugatti 251 - 251001

Slightly more than 5 minutes work. This time I won't give away what made it so easy.

PK-751 and PK-752 are pretty famous here... as was DCR-333, and probably DBS-444, as well as CMS-007... BB-888, who remembers what that was on?

I still think the best number plate a racing driver managed to get from the British licencing authorities
was the one used by North of England and Lotus driver Jimmy Blumer. He managed to get FKU2 out of them !

I'll probably be back-the-front, but PK-752 was Beechey's black 48 Series, with PK-751 his S4 but they're easy pickings of course.

Bravo Henk! Congratulations for your huge and sound info resources.
Of course you are right on IIA... The "81825 Bo" however, was apparently a 335 S version when became (in)famous.

Propose now some Le Mans entries mix with the aim to supply a little longer pleasure time:

Manel,

Can you please elaborate as to what cars these were? And the claim to fame of each car?

For example what particular cars were "Porsche 356SL - 062" or "Ferrari 290S - 0646"?

Where does the number appear on a 300SLR? Any photos I have seen show none on the front, so is it only on the back?

Was it?

Last I saw it it was on a Lotus Elite, IIRC. Anyway, I associate it, rightly or wrongly, with Bill Brown.

Well, I will quit playing spoilsport. To identify a car by its registration plate, the best you can do to start with is visit my website at www.vasmel.com. There you select the big red button "go to my license plates". All replies I gave you were copied from this site. I know it is far from complete, but I am working on it. Wish I had some more time for the, now long overdue, update. There is lots more that I have found, but everytime there is even more new info, and I love it more than anything else to collect new information. Publishing it in a readable format comes second everytime.

Oh, and by the way, contributions are welcome. Maybe they will force me into update mode.
If you have a next set of questions, I will refrain from answering, to give others a chance. Unless you can come up with a registration that is not on my site ;-)

Regards,

Henk Vasmel

I still owe you some explanation on BO81825

According to my database the car is a 290S, and it appeared first as such a car in the Buenos Aires GP with start number (4).
The second appearance of this car is as a 315S in the Sebring 12 Hours with number (12)
The third and definitely last appearance of this car is at the Mille Miglia with a 335S engine. Number (531) and driven by De Portago, as in Sebring. Only at the MM do I have it with a license plate, with the additional remark Prova. It is not common for Prova numbers to be this high. Mostly they are below 1000 or 2000, two digit ones very common.

To revert to the car, 3 appearances, with 3 different engines, so which type do we choose? My opinion is that a car does not really change its type number after its debut, so for me it is a 290S.

Henk Vasmel

As Henk have already given the basic data so far, I have added further details to you by E-mail.

Any ideas as to who holds this plate? I understand the car is one of seven from 1974-75:
