 to Gerhard Berger for this decision. I think Ascanelli was one of the most underestimated engineers of 90s, who wasn't given the opportunity to really deliver. He did a good job with Piquet and Senna as a race engineer and I believe was capable for a position of technical director even 10 years ago.

Recently I watched again the episodes of documentary about McLaren in 1993, and was impressed with his commitment and professionalism. Unfortunately, it seems like team bosses (Dennis, Todt) didn't like him much, presumably because he appeared to be too all-sufficient and independent. He is also emotional man, but when people started to talk about Ross Brawn's departure, the first man I thought as a best replacement for him was Ascanelli.

For me, he was destined to become a top figure at Ferrari, but it didn't happened. Now his old friend Berger convinced him to return to F1, and there is a hope that Ascanelli can do a great job and redeem his racing career.

Could be also a first step to enter Maserati into F1 on a basis of Toro Rosso team?

Since he comes from the Masarati project, he have been working within the confines of the FIAT / Ferrari / Masarati group.

He may feel that he should have been given a role in the revamped Ferrari F1 team, and it may be that Todt (and whoever else would be in on that decision) did not see him as the right man for the job.

When you look at his career it seem as if he was a Barnard man moving with him a couple of times and working as an engineer for Piquet, Berger and Senna.

However once the current Todt regime came on steam at Ferrari, it looks as if he was no longer in favour. I do not think that agood engineer becomes a bad one from one day to another. But when building a group of people, who will spend more time together in a year, than they do with their families, then the interpersonal issues mean something as well.

And basically look as if Ascanelli was moved to the side, making room for Ross Brawn.

10 years is a long time to be away from F1, I wish him the best but not really sure that is the best way for Tore Rosso.

Turun Sanomat said in September 2006 that Gerhard Berger wants him there and move was confirmed 27.3.2007.

Basically Mika, being still very young and inexperienced, get's pretty lost during a testing session. Ascanelli doesn't hold back his opinion when talking to the other engineers and at one point declares "driver brain failure" instead of the supposed technical problem. It's pretty funny, but may also be part of the reason Giorgio wasn't employed in F1 during the last decade. I'm just guessing, but somehow he does not really seem to fit into RD's corporate empire.

He certainly talks very straight (agitated even sometimes), also with Senna in another part of the documentary, who doesn't seem to have a problem with that.
