Hi Tony

Not just any Mk3 either, it was one of the two ex Le Mans Aston Martin engined cars, although it had a Chevy motor when Clive had it.

Cheers
Richard

Autosport today reports that the ex-John Woolfe / Team VdS T70 Mk3b SL76 / 146 has been acquired by Grant Tromans and brought back from the US with the possibility of it competing at this July's Le Mans Classic with Ray Bellm behind the wheel.
Here is an 8mm clip of the car that I took in the paddock at Oulton Park in May 1969 when it was brand new, and entered by John in the Tourist Trophy for Dickie Attwood.

I note that before the car went to auction, Bonhams declared:

Lot Notice:
Please note, the chassis number for the Lola is SL76/1138 and not SL76/138 as catalogued

Looking at the March / April issue of Vintage Motorsport, I notice that John Starkey has this car up for sale again, no mention of chassis numbers this time.......

Well it did appear at the Silverstone Classic, 2 years later than originally planned.....

...and it was in Colin Bennett's garage at Silverstone this weekend, still not quite ready to run. My understanding is that Michael Hanson who  owns the car, is rumoured to have turned down an offer of £1m for it.

lots of great photos on this section, but can anyone advise me on this, were the mk3 and the mk3b roughly the same width across the mid section of the sills, although they used different chassis ? can anyone supply some dimensions for the mk3.

The wheelbase was 95 ins for both the Mk3 & Mk3b & the track was virtually the same at 57/58ins dependant upon rims (could reduce to 54ins).

Interestingly, the Mk3 was lighter than the 3b at 1760lbs as opposed to 1930lbs.

giraffe, thanks for your reply, but it is the width of the bodywork, especially at the sills that i am after, i am a model maker who is trying to make a mk3 from a mk3b (in 1/24 scale), i read that the mk3 coupe and late spyder were essentially the same car, with body removed, can anyone throw any light on that ? as i would also like a spyder in my collection. thanks in anticipation.

As a totally uneducated guess, I'd say yes. But what is the MkIIIb kit?

You probably know that Tamiya make a 1/24 T70 Spyder slot car body, which might make your task a lot easier

The Mk3 Spyder and the Mk 3 Coupé used the same chassis. In his book Lola T70 V8 Coupés - A Technical Appraisal Ian Bamsey quotes from Lola publicity material of the time:

A unique feature of this car is that its chassis is identical to that of the Lola Type 70 Mk. III sports-racing car. This revolutionary feature means that entrants in both European G.T. events and American Can Am sports car races can substantially reduce running expenditure by converting the sports car into its G.T. version, and vice versa.

See also this post from earlier in this thread:

The MKIII was designed from the beginning to allow for such conversion. While it probably took months to convert it to spyder form initially, at this point the conversion back to coupe could be done in a weekend making it a versatile car for various series. Notice that the car retains the low crossbeam of the coupe and the wiper motor.
I hope he brings it to Road America.

The Mk 3B Coupé used the T162 chassis. It's not clear in the book exactly how this differed from the T70 version.

The cab width of a MkIII and a Mk3b coupe are the same even though the actual parts are different. The bulkhead firewall panel is different for instance.

thanks for your replies, i must have read that info as i have both ian bamsey and john starkeys books on this subject. my interest is with regard to modelling, i have made the t70 mk3b in 1/24 scale from resin. i would like to do the earlier ones too, it's as easy to get it right as get it wrong. so a little bit of research now will ensure i get it close to being right.

Both these pictures are thought to be John Meyer at Mount Equinox hill climb in 1968 or 1969.

Does any body have an entry list or results for these events?

RLT, the Meyer Lola T70 SL71/32, was the ex Penske /Donohue car. Meyer won, and set the all time record at Mt. Equinox in 1968. this information is from the John Starkey Lola book published in 2009. I have a source that might have the results and an entry list for those two years. I will contact them. they are very busy, and take some time to reply. there was also a site, can't find it at the moment, something like eastern hill climb association ? in the United States. you might also contact the S.C.C.A site,  don't know if it was a sanctioned event, some one there might be able to lead you in the right direction.

waking up this thread, can any lead me to images of the Canadians George Eaton and John Cannon driven Lola T70 Mk. 111B (SL76/140 x Penske)  from Daytona

1970, or from Sebring the same year driven by Bob Brown and Greg Young. I have only found four on the internet, not the best. This is to do with a 1/43 model

project,  hope to find more details regards the graphics on the car. If any one has images they would rather share privately please pm me, they would be for my eyes

only.

Michael

Thanks for your reply, I was aware of those two, unfortunately the colour image in the link is small, at least on my computer, lose all resolution if I try to enlarge. I do have one soft focus image, which is  I think a screen grab of the car at Daytona (can't remember where I found it now ?)  from the left side, just in front of the rear wheel to the front of the car, I can't post images here, or I would include it.

I'm struggling to get on terms with the photo posting arrangement on this site too!  Too much hassle and I'm dismayed to see all the images posted many years ago that have disappeared (See post #264 for example). I'm on other forums where the process is much more straightforward and older posts seems to retain their images....

So in that respect it's safer to provide links to well functioning websites* and store important discoveries in our own archive on hard disk, memory stick, CD or on paper!

*Facebook, Twitter ++ is not one of those recommended, suddenly whole accounts can just disappear and all the images posted are gone forever!
